NYC public schools face complex challenges—the ongoing rise in chronic absenteeism, widening gaps in students’ math and reading skills, and lack of resources to support multilingual learners— amid a background of deep uncertainty around federal policy and funding changes. At New Visions, in moments like this, we lean into what we’ve learned from decades of fostering steady gains in the number of students who graduate on time, well-prepared for their next steps. Seeing the results of our impactful programs makes us confident in our ability to continue to expand young people’s opportunities. Our job is to build on these wins, and make them the norm, rather than the exception, so that every student in every school can experience that same level of success. During the past year, we have deepened partnerships with city agencies like the Department of Homeless Services to better serve students and their families, supported educators and school leaders with innovative tools and curriculum, and expanded opportunities for young people to investigate careers. The past year’s highlights include:

Career Readiness: Over 600 students built skills and explored careers through our summer Career Academies in partnership with best-in- class employers. Career Resources: Our new Career Directory enables counselors and students to explore over 240 career training programs and resources in one user-friendly site.

Science Curriculum: As our Biology and Earth & Space Science became the #1 most selected science curricula in NYC , we trained teachers from more than 300 schools. Advanced Coursework: We notified 17,500 high school students of their eligibility for free courses through CUNY College Now, and streamlined their applications.

Scholarships: We granted $1.2 million to 175 students to pursue their college and career goals. Math Coaching: Expert New Visions coaches provided 2,110 hours of support for math teachers in 63 schools to help them successfully implement new curriculum.

Over 36 years, through many periods of rapid change, New Visions has consistently risen to meet the moment by providing responsive, effective solutions to challenges in public education. In our quest to provide every child–not just some children–with access to services they need to thrive, we’re now turning our attention to using technology to improve communication and coordination across agencies and nonprofits throughout NYC. Thank you for being part of our ongoing effort to meet the challenges of this moment and secure a stronger future for students and families.

We help 1,600+ schools plan for the success of over 850,000 New York City students.

For 15+ years, New Visions has provided comprehensive support to 71 NYC public secondary schools —our Affinity Network– serving a higher-needs student population than the city overall. The result? Our Affinity schools, which serve over 35,000 students, consistently outperform other city schools in graduation and college enrollment rates. 91 % Turning Opportunity into Impact 2023-2024:

New Visions builds systems to reduce educational inequity and expand opportunities for students in public schools. We envision a world in which all students have access to public schools that prepare them to thrive academically, socially, and as engaged members of society.

ON-TIME GRADUATION RATE FOR THE CLASS OF 2024

What really stands out with New Visions is their commitment to collaborating for the purpose of impact. While it shouldn’t sound unique, it is—because true collaboration isn’t always easy. But with New Visions, there’s a deep commitment to working together in service of schools, and that shows up every time we sit down.

Tools for School and Student Success

Technology for Collaboration

The Portal by New Visions is a student planning and school management tool that empowers educators with the data they need to improve student outcomes. Each year, we launch dozens of new features developed in deep collaboration with educators and partners to meet the authentic challenges they face in their day-to-day work.

In NYC, over 40,000 children live in shelters. These students face some of the greatest obstacles to success in school. Through groundbreaking interagency collaboration, New Visions is working to ensure that students and their families facing housing insecurity get the support they need. 250 + school-based advocates across the Bronx used the Portal to connect 650+ students and their families in shelters to essential services, thanks to the Every Child and Family is Known initiative

92 % of NYC public schools actively used the Portal to guide student planning in 2024, improving graduation and attendance rates

This was the first year that Uniondale High School has ever exceeded a 90% graduation rate. The Portal was a key tool in reaching that achievement. We used it to target and organize support for our students based on their progress towards graduation. The New Visions team’s collaborative approach empowered our staff to provide effective and timely graduation support.

During my career as a public servant, I have not seen this sort of collaborative interagency effort be so effective at this scale. It truly is groundbreaking and I am honored to be a part of it. Darma V. Diaz

NEW PORTAL FEATURE! Our updated Network Dashboard now includes longitudinal attendance data, allowing district users to see year-over-year attendance trends, identify where direct support is most needed, and highlight bright spots.

The Portal has enhanced our ability to make sure that our students who live in shelters get the best support possible. Shelter staff and administrators at Students in Temporary Housing collaborate using the Portal to ensure supports such as attendance teacher visits are available to the students most in need. Meeting the Moment

RE-ENGAGING Students

The Challenge: Chronic absenteeism has surged in the wake of the pandemic, slowing academic recovery and widening achievement gaps.

Our Impact:

7 % decrease in chronic

absenteeism in our core network since 2022

Our Solution: We coach educators and develop Portal features to help schools monitor attendance trends, easily identify students with declining attendance, and ensure every one of those students has a support plan.

The [Portal] attendance report outlines patterns in a really student-and parent-friendly way, and breaks down trends… [to] drive conversations about understanding student attendance patterns and finding solutions.

New Visions goes the extra mile to increase student success by coaching teachers to implement the new math curriculum. They are so effective and perfectly matched to the values of your school.

Meredith Phelan ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL, NYC

SUPPORTING Teacher Success with New Math Curriculum

EMPOWERING English Language Learners

Our Solution: Since 2017, our Building Secondary English Learner Educator and Administrator Leadership (B-SEAL) program has trained around 130 teachers and leaders in innovative strategies to help students learning English accelerate their progress and succeed in school. Through a partnership with City College, these educators earn either a TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certification or a Bilingual Extension, at almost no cost to them. The Challenge: NYC’s population of Multilingual Learners continues to grow, yet too few educators are equipped to meet their academic and socioemotional needs.

100 % of teachers and principals agreed that B-SEAL effectively prepared them to meet Multilingual Learner needs Our Impact:

Shanna Douglas PRINCIPAL, NYC

The Challenge: Math achievement has stalled nationwide. Without strong coaching and leadership support, even the best curriculum can fall short—especially in schools serving the highest-need students. Our Solution: New Visions supports NYC Solves, a citywide initiative to implement the Illustrative Mathematics curriculum in middle and high schools, by offering curriculum-based professional development and in-school coaching to build teacher skills and confidence, and improve student outcomes.

Our Impact: Based on the outstanding feedback from educators for our Algebra I support in SY 2023-24, we were invited to coach in over 140 NYC secondary schools during SY 2024-25.

B-SEAL was an amazing opportunity. The kids are feeling more empowered, they can really read and comprehend texts. It’s a huge victory.

Expanding College Access & Success

New Visions provides over $ 1.2 million in scholarships to students in our network each year.

Given the challenging rollout of the new FAFSA during 2023-24, we’re especially proud to highlight our Bridge program, which supported students and families in navigating these complexities. Bridge Coaches are recent high school graduates, trained and supported by New Visions, who help high school seniors navigate the path to college.

New Visions Affinity schools outpaced class of 2022 national college enrollment rates 72% to 62% , according to the most recent available enrollment data.

I'm currently attending Buffalo State University and have been incredibly grateful for the scholarship support I've received. The funds have allowed me to focus more on my studies by alleviating financial pressures, enabling me to invest in textbooks, research materials, and participate in extracurricular activities that enrich my education beyond the classroom.

New Visions isn’t just a resource—it’s a network. Whether I need support with FAFSA, postsecondary planning, or problem-solving a unique challenge, I know I can call someone at New Visions who has the expertise to help. It’s a support system that makes a real difference in how we serve students. David Buie COLLEGE ADVISOR, NYC

78 % of graduates participating in our Bridge to College program completed FAFSA—surpassing the statewide completion rate by more than 20 percentage points

Cyril Annoh NEW VISIONS OPPORTUNITY SCHOLAR, SUNY BUFFALO

I love being a Bridge coach, giving back and being able to help the students. Since they come from an underserved community in the Bronx, students need personalized support to reach the same goals as their peers at private schools, who already get that level of support.

INNOVATION SPOTLIGHT: Expanding Access to College Now

The CUNY College Now program offers NYC public high school students opportunities to better prepare for their next steps by taking credit bearing college courses. This fall, we worked with CUNY to expand the reach of this valuable program, notifying 17,500+ students and their caregivers about their eligibility for College Now , and enabling high school counselors and college staff to track applications and provide targeted support so more students enroll. Based on the program’s success, we're expanding it citywide in Spring 2025.

Connecting Students to Careers

“ The Career Academy was the first time I made a resume. It really let an employer know what I can do. I actually used that resume when I got a job recently , so I’m really proud of that. ” “ Before, I thought it was very intimidating to reach out to people, but now I realize that there are so many people who are willing to help. ” “ Because of the Academy experience, I now make and follow a monthly budget. I track my spending, set saving goals, and plan better, which helps me manage my money and save for the future. ”

WHAT ARE STUDENTS

SAYING ABOUT THEIR CAREER ACADEMY EXPERIENCE?

New Visions’ Career Academies provide paid

experiences in high-growth industries through hands-on projects, industry panels, and professional networking to over 600 students per year.

“ I used to think teamwork was about a leader ordering and giving directions, but now I know it’s also about listening to your peers. ”

Every year, a significant number of students choose to go directly into the workforce instead of enrolling in a traditional college pathway, but often struggle to identify high-quality opportunities. In 2024, we launched our Career Directory, a free, open-access platform with up-to-date information on postsecondary training, certifications, internships, support services, and job placement assistance, to help counselors and students find non-college programs that are a great investment.

It is with profound sadness that we mark the passing of our beloved founder, chairman, and friend, Richard (Dick) Beattie. Over the past four decades, Mr. Beattie was one of the greatest champions of New York City’s public schools and the millions of students they have served. Today there are hundreds of thousands of adults whose paths to graduation, to college, and to careers were quietly shaped by his vision, his courage, and his unwavering support for educators. His passion for ensuring that every child in our city has access to a great school brought all of us together as an extended family. All of us at New Visions feel a profound sense of gratitude for the man who founded and steadfastly supported New Visions for Public Schools for 36 years. We also feel a deep obligation to ensure the amazing organization he leaves as his legacy continues to create new opportunities for many future generations of students to come. Thank you for joining us in honoring Mr. Beattie’s inspiring legacy.
