OCTOBER 2024

Growing Together With You

Growing up in New Jersey — the home, by the way, of the best pizza in the world — we didn’t make our own pizza, even as an Italian family. We didn’t need to. Too many restaurants in town had great pizza. As a kid, I could go to a little place called Comet Pizzeria on Broad Street in Hillside and buy pizza by the slice. It was always hot, always fresh. Comet Pizza is still in business and still looks the same as it did 40 years ago! In honor of October as National Pizza Month, it’s a good time to appreciate the enduring value of pizza. Pizza holds a special place in my heart. In our family, dinner together every night was important. We would wait for Dad to get home from work, and Mom would prepare steak or chicken. But every now and then, Mom would say we were getting pizza. Omigod, pizza! Everybody would fight over who got which piece. It was a big event! Unite Over Pizza! It’s Pizza Month! Carmen Calls for National Unity

That pizza tradition continues today. When my wife says, “We’re having pizza today,” it’s a big deal for our kids and grandkids. And when we hit a milestone at the firm, such as winning a big personal injury case, we have Pizza Day. It’s not like having a beer or a cocktail together. It’s something everyone enjoys at a more basic level. Pizza is something everyone can agree on. No matter how annoyed you are with somebody. If they bring you a pizza, it gets better. We had a Pizza Day at the firm recently when we achieved our goal of 1,100 five-star Google reviews. For a small firm, that’s a major milestone. We competed as teams, to see which group could get more great reviews. My team lost, and I am wasn’t thrilled about that. But I can still enjoy a pizza with those other guys. Of course, making sure everybody gets what they want on their pizza can be tough. In the Disney family movie “Inside Out,” a Midwestern family that has just moved to California orders lunch in a pizzeria, and they’re horrified when the server hands them a slice bristling with broccoli. “Congratulations, San Francisco, you’ve ruined pizza!” fumes the fire-red character Anger as the family stalks out. People have big debates about toppings. Are you a traditionalist if you go with plain cheese? If you like pepperoni, are you a little to the right or left? Do you go crazy and say, “I want everything”? Or are you more independent-minded and prefer just pineapple?

Exploring the Marvels of Your Skeletal System ‘Bone’ Voyage!

Make no bones about it; our skeletons are a real rib-tickler of fascinating facts! From the impressive strength of our thigh bones to the tiny marvels of the inner ear, your bones are the unsung heroes of your body. So, rest your bones in a comfy chair because we are about to dig up some of the most shocking skeletal secrets. Babies have more bones than adults. Although babies are tiny, their bodies

kids are around ages 11–15, the critical time for significant growth spurts thanks to growth plates that close as we age. Half of our bones are in our feet and hands. Did you know that many of our bones are in the smaller extremities of our body? Nearly half of our 206 adult bones are in our hands and feet! Each foot has 26 bones, and our hands both have 27 bones, which is 106 bones. Our hands even have a bonus bone called the pisiform, located on the outside edge of our wrists. The funny bone is a nerve. Have you ever hit your funny bone? Well, you are not hitting a bone at all. This area on the body is part of the ulnar nerve, which goes from your neck to your hand. Bone, muscle, and fat typically protect nerves, but a small portion of this nerve on the back of your elbow is more exposed. So, when you hit your funny bone, named for its location near the humerus bone (a homophone of “humorous”), you’re really bumping into the ulnar nerve. So, now that you’ve “boned up” on the most fascinating fossil facts, give your skeleton a little nod for the incredible things it does to support you and keep you moving!

EXCITING EXPANSION Welcoming Mrs. Carlena Hull, Our New Probate Attorney

Is there a deeper psychological meaning here? What does your choice of toppings say about your personality? I don’t know. I like meat on a pizza — pepperoni, ham, you name it. I saw one study saying that ordering several meats on your pizza marks you as an engaging extrovert who thrives at the center of attention. Hmmmm. If the shoe fits? I don’t know. But I do know that American pizza isn’t like pizza anywhere else. Even in Italy, pizza is totally different. Don’t get me wrong — it’s good. It’s just not that American pizza we have all learned to love. You don’t get pizza like that anywhere else in the world. Our pizza is purely American, and visitors from other countries are often shocked by how good it is. It’s the No. 1 food that nearly everybody agrees on. So, with National Pizza Month upon us and the nationwide election campaigns in high gear, I have a suggestion. Let’s all take time out, step back from all the political wear-and-tear and arguing, and just sit down with each other over a pizza and talk it out. It’s time to come together over pizza!

AMERICA’S MOST BIZARRE LEGAL RELICS

I would like to start by apologizing to super fans of the 1995 crime drama “Se7en,” who thought they had their baby’s name all picked out. While it’s fine to include a number in a movie’s title, putting a number in a baby’s name is usually illegal. Depending on your state, some rules apply to the length, letters, and symbols that may be legally included in a name. Here are three specific restrictions some states impose for naming your child. Derogatory, Obscene, or Offensive Some of the most common naming rules are to prevent someone from giving their baby a particularly heinous name. A baby’s name cannot be offensive, obscene, or include derogatory terms. Additionally, some monikers, like “King,” “Queen,” and “Santa Claus,” might not seem offensive but are still considered illegal. Other banned

names include “Jesus Christ,” “Adolf Hitler,” “Messiah,” and “Nutella.” Say No to Math If you have ever wondered why you’ve never met someone from Canton or Cleveland named R2-D2 or 42069, there is a legal reason for that. Some states, including Ohio, New Jersey, and Virginia, forbid using numbers in baby names. However, this is not true across the board. States like Illinois, California, and Florida have no specific rules against including numbers in names. New York, however, forbids using numbers and mandates the maximum length of all first names to be 30 characters long or less. Symbols and Non-English Letters In 2020, Elon Musk made waves when he and his girlfriend Grimes named their baby boy X Æ A-Xii. If you are struggling to

pronounce that name, you are not alone. However, depending on the baby’s birth state, that name may run afoul of the law. In New York, for instance, symbols like hyphens, asterisks, and apostrophes are not allowed. California law prohibits pictographs and non-English characters. These rules are often due to the software used to keep records of people’s names and are common across many states. If you must name your baby something numerical or inappropriate, I recommend moving to Kentucky. It is one of the few states with no significant rules regarding naming children.
