HONDA is still one of our favourite brands

Back-up cameras are becoming essential

Without a doubt, Honda, the great Japanese brand of cars and light trucks, remains one of the perennial favourites of North American buyers. Although many of its vehicles are built in North America, they retain the quality and distinction that established the brand’s reputation. Honda is tackling the new automotive year with a totally redesigned Fit sub-compact. Even though it was completely redone, this small front-wheel drive has kept all the cha- racteristics that buyers like. A unique electric version of the Fit should be offered soon. The Honda Civic is still the brand’s most popular car. Available as a sedan or coupe, this com- pact car needs little introduction. It is appre- ciated for its peppy engine and solid road handling. In some American states, it can be powered by a natural gas engine, while the hybrid version is available as a special order. Speaking of hybrids, Honda’s mid-sized car, the Accord, is also available with hybrid power — again, as a special order. This popular model is still offered as a great sedan or as a sporty

The Honda Clarity FX is only available in a few select states; it is a very special electric vehicle that runs on hydrogen. If you are a fan of small sporty cars, why not ask your Honda dealer to see the incred- ible CR-Z coupe, a hybrid sub-compact powered by a four-cylinder engine com- bined with an electric motor. It is even produced with an optional standard-shift transmission. If it is a small truck you are looking for, you might be interested by the very popular CR-V, one of the country’s favourite com- pact SUVs. Its bigger companion is the Pilot, a mid-sized truck powered by a V-6 engine and front- or all-wheel drive. Small fami- lies will appreciate the mighty Odyssey minivan, whose V-6 engine can run on three cylinders at cruising speed.

Many auto makers have been offering back-up cameras on their vehicles. These little cameras are well hidden within a trim placed on the back of the car or the truck. They transmit a real-time moving image of what is behind the vehicle to a small screen in the rear-view mirror or to a bigger screen combined with the navigation system. What if you own an older car or truck and would like to install such an acces- sory? Aftermarket parts and accessories manufacturers can help you with that. It is now possible to buy a kit that retrofits

on your car or truck for a modest price. If you have a few basic tools you can install the kit very easily yourself in a few hours. Such kits come with a mirror that covers the actual rearview mirror and is held in place by Velcro straps. Some new mirrors include a hands-free telephone connection with speaker. The back-up mini-screen works with a simple connection to a 12-volt power outlet. The rear camera clips to the license plate, which you will have to remove and replace. The camera is connected to a little sender that is,

in turn, connected to the back-up light wire. This is where a little handywork is needed, but you can always ask a friend for help! Whether you do the job yourself or have it done at your local garage, the back-up camera is a smart safety feature for any year of car.

The Honda Fit has been totally redesigned for the coming year.

looking coupe. There is also a station-wagonish version of the Accord, called the Crosstour; it is easily recognizable with its sleek fastback roof.

A back-up camera increases safety.
