Our Journey to a Baby Dreams of a Family in the Making

We’ve always wanted our lives to be about love, building a family, and creating happiness together. For both of us, having a baby is the next exciting chapter of our story, a chance to create something beautiful and full of love. The process hasn’t always been easy. We’ve been trying to conceive for almost a year, and in that time, we’ve had to confront fears, work through physical challenges, and trust in the universe to take care of us. This is really a story about perseverance, a motif woven throughout both of our lives. It’s a journey of vulnerability, growth, and unexpected lessons, and through it all, we are holding onto the excitement of what’s to come. Our pregnancy story is a full-circle moment for me. My parents faced serious struggles and medical issues for over 10 years before they could conceive me. It’s always made me grateful for how lucky I am just to be alive, how fortunate I am to have parents who kept trying, praying, and putting their faith in God that they would one day welcome a child into their arms. I, too, continue to believe that the universe will give us a baby to love. Ashley always wanted to have a baby, though it wasn’t always possible with past relationships, timing, and all the other things that cause us to push off dreams. Growing up, she had an amazing family and home life. She always imagined giving that same love and joy to her own child one day. For a long time, she thought it would never happen. She even convinced herself she didn’t want it anymore. But when we met, things changed. There’s no question that this is something she wants more than anything. Ashley has had to face fears she didn’t even know she had, like the difficulties of conceiving in your 30s. For me, a baby is a second or even third chance. I have a 17-year-old daughter whom I had at a young age, and I wasn’t the perfect father. I also lost a baby boy when he was 12 weeks along. Thinking

about family now, this is an opportunity to build a relationship with a child in the best way I can.

Education has been a huge part of this journey. As Ashley tracks her cycles and does ovulation tests, it’s been an eye-opening and empowering lesson about her body. Positive thinking plays a significant role in all of this. It’s hard not to get down on yourself when your body isn’t cooperating, but staying hopeful is crucial. We’re also thankful for the support, love, and encouragement from close friends and family. Ashley wants our little one to be her main focus when we do have our child. I know that when she becomes pregnant, I will be forced to evolve, expand our team at Salazar Scoops, and truly instill our values with the crew so we can trust that all our customers still receive the same high level of care. We’ve focused on remaining positive, believing this is meant for us, and staying open to whatever happens. Ashley can’t wait to instill our values of love, kindness, and being a good person in our child. She’s excited to watch a child grow, see their curiosity, and guide them in a way that helps them become their own unique and authentic person. She used to be a teacher and can’t wait to see our child’s “aha” moments. I feel a sense of hope and excitement in building a new, positive life with another child. Will there be a little Salazar one day, scooping for the first time in your yard? Yes, we know that day will come. We don’t know when, but we’re looking forward to new beginnings. No matter how long it takes, we’re ready to welcome our baby with open hearts, endless love, and all the joy a family can bring.

Dogs leave a pawprint on our hearts, but senior dogs often have a long wait for their forever homes and face unique challenges. The Golden Bark Foundation, founded in 2022 by Seth Schilling, is dedicated to ensuring senior dogs live their golden years surrounded by love. At Salazar Scoops, we believe all dogs deserve health, happiness, and a clean environment, and we are proud to partner with Golden Bark Foundation. When Seth and her husband saw an older schnauzer named Sadie up for adoption in 2015, they thought she would make a perfect companion for their dog. Sadie would go on to change their lives, and when she crossed the rainbow bridge, they were inspired to do more for older dogs who needed them most. “Senior dogs are always at the bottom of the totem pole,” she said. “We try to advocate for senior adoption and why it is special and important to adopt them even at the end stage of their journeys.” The Golden Bark Foundation takes in dogs who are 7 and older, pairing them with foster homes and providing for all of their medical needs, food, and supplies. They work to get them adopted, participate in community events, and give those who don’t find homes a comfortable and loving hospice program. We share Golden Bark’s mission of protecting senior dogs, and we know that these older pups need a clean environment to thrive. They are more susceptible to getting sick and having mobility issues. Salazar Scoops is honored to advocate alongside Golden Bark for clean yards that keep seniors happy and healthy. There are many ways to support Golden Bark. Follow them on social media, donate, or attend their upcoming fundraising gala, which we are proud to sponsor. It will be a night filled with auctions, raffles, great food, live music, flash tattoos, adoptable dogs, and even a dog kissing booth. The Scoop: Golden Bark Foundation Supporting Senior Dogs With Love

A tiny desert town along Route 66 in Arizona is home to a new hero — a big, shaggy ranch dog who rescued a toddler lost in the desert this past April. Two-year-old Boden Allen was missing from his Seligman, Arizona, home for 16 hours when a 6-year-old Anatolian Pyrenees named Buford appeared in his master’s driveway with the child at his side — 7 miles from Boden’s home. Buford’s owner, Scotty Dunton, had heard about the child’s disappearance. “I noticed my dog was sitting by the entrance (to his ranch),” he said, “and the little kid’s standing there with my dog!” He calmed the child, who was unharmed except for a few scrapes and nicks, and gave him water and food while calling authorities. Dunton was overjoyed. “I was ecstatic that he was okay and that my dog found him,” he said. Dunton asked Boden if he had been walking all night, and the child told him no, he had been lying under a tree. “Did my dog find you?” Dunton asked Boden. He wasn’t surprised when the child said yes. Dunton traced the little boy’s tracks more than a mile from his ranch, with Buford’s paw prints beside them. “That’s what he does,” Dunton said of Buford. “He loves kids. I can imagine he wouldn’t leave him when he found him.” Dunton’s discovery of the little boy ended an anxious 16- hour search by more than 40 search-and-rescue volunteers, sheriff’s deputies, and state public-safety officers. Wearing only a tank top and pajama pants, Boden had wandered away at about 5 p.m. into rugged desert terrain, where two mountain lions were spotted later that night. Boden’s frantic parents had reported his absence to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office. Dunton says he wasn’t surprised by Buford’s protective behavior. “He is a guardian dog. He patrols all night and keeps coyotes away,” he says. The Anatolian Pyrenees is a crossbreed, a combination of a Great Pyrenees and an Anatolian shepherd, known for its intelligence, gentleness, and protective nature. In appreciation for their neighborhood hero, Buford’s admirers piled chew toys, bones, and other gifts on Dunton’s doorstep for days after the rescue. The Scoop: Dog Friendly SLC

Your Ultimate Guide to Pup-Approved Adventures

When Brandy Chenoweth moved to Salt Lake City in 2017 with her golden retriever, Scout, they were ready to enjoy dog-friendly patios and adventures. She quickly realized Utah has stricter regulations on where pups can hang out, and information for dog- friendly activities was hard to find. She launched Dog Friendly SLC as a free, reliable resource for dog lovers across Northern Utah. At Salazar Scoops, we also believe in connecting the community with businesses and spaces that prioritize the well-being and enjoyment of dogs. Dog Friendly SLC started on Instagram and quickly grew to a website filled with places you and your dog can visit. Along with the interactive map of pup- approved locations, there’s information on services for your furry best friend and fun local events.

“More people are putting a lot more emphasis on their relationship with their dogs, and are looking for activities to do with them,” she said. “There was a study that came out recently that said in Salt Lake City proper, there’s actually more households with a dog than children for the first time.” Brandy doesn’t just share places and activities where dogs are allowed; she and Scout — the real star of Dog Friendly SLC — test out how dog-friendly they are. She shares parking details, whether a patio is large enough to accommodate large breeds, how loud a location is, and whether the owners provide water. The Humane Society of Concord took in 15 of the dogs, including Hero, and other local rescues housed the rest. When the sad story of these neglected dogs reached the community, people heard the call and donated funds to help cover their medical and care costs. If it had not been for Hero’s life-saving feat, there’s no telling what would have become of her furry friends. The shelter that named her Hero even gave her a last name, Salvare, which means to save and protect. They described her as “a friendly girl with the softness of a sweet old lady” who deserved a quiet home as she recovered. Hero has since found her forever home and was adopted the next day after the shelter searched for a new owner. Thanks to the kind and persevering hound, many other dogs from the home have also been adopted. “Despite Hero’s sad backstory, she’s proof that dogs are resilient creatures that only show love that is unconditional,” the shelter wrote. Hero may have started as a victim, but she ended a chapter of abuse as a rescuer. Her quiet bravery saved her and transformed the lives of dozens of others, proving that even in the darkest places, hope can come on four legs and floppy ears.

When a 10-year-old basset hound fled from her neglectful home, she didn’t just rescue herself from abuse and poor conditions; she ended up saving more than 30 other animals from unimaginable suffering. Hero, as she’s since been named, was in bad shape when animal rescuers first discovered her. Emaciated and dirty, her overgrown nails had twisted, making it painful for her to walk. She had a painful bladder infection and heartworms. Despite the pain she was in, she made a daring escape, and her ID tag led animal control to a house of horrors. Officers found 36 other dogs, a chicken, and a cat at the location, suffering from various ailments and signs of abuse. Some animals lived in small, dirty cages; others had injuries and signs of malnutrition. All of them were dirty and had a medical issue of some kind. It was clear they needed help.
