OCTOBER 2024 | VOLUME 5 | EDITION3

In 2017, the PUHSD Student Board Member Program was initiated. Kathleen Geary and Maureen “Mo” Ward, who served as Board Trustees for many years, recognized the significance of the "Student Voice" and the necessity for our District to embrace it. Since the program's establishment, PUHSD Student Board Members have been featured as presenters at the California School Board Association Conference on multiple occasions, showcasing their expertise in Governance by the time the December Conference rolls around each year. Even when not presenting, Student Board Members have the opportunity to attend the Conference annually to engage in Student Board Member workshops and sessions. In recent years, a law has been enacted mandating school districts with high schools to include a Student Board Member on their Board. One of the responsibilities of the Student Board Member is to facilitate a gathering of students for a meeting we call “Student Voice”. The Student Board Member meets with the group of students at their campus and has a zoom meeting with the other groups from all of the other sites. Dr. Tooker works with the students to discuss topics and share insight and calls to action among the groups. It has proven to be very engaging and informative. Tomorrow, 10.2.24, is the first session of this year!

I am always in awe of these students and their efforts to serve their school communities. This will be another great year with them sharing the “Student Voice” of our campuses.

October Board Meeting Tuesday - October 15, 2024 5:30 pm RVO Meeting Room (District Campus) 13000 New Airport Road - Auburn

Student Board Members function as a preferential non-binding voting representative to the Superintendent and the PUHSD Board of Trustees. The Student Board Member provides the PUHSD Governing Body with information regarding student interests, concerns, and ideas thereby enhancing the relevance and effectiveness of many school site and District programs. The 2024-2025 Student Board Members have begun their duties by attending a day of training, a reception for their families to meet the Board and District Administrators, as well as kicking off the Staff Welcome Back before school started. At the August 20th Board Meeting, they were sworn in by Board President Deborah Brannam. Each year these incredible students bring an invaluable student perspective to our Board, District, and schools. Please join us in welcoming this year's Student Board Members and be sure to thank them for their service.

From L-R Ruby Mussell (Colfax), Ava Conn (Placer/Confluence/MVCA), Zoe Ordway (Foresthill), and Claire Delany (Del Oro/Confluence West)

Conn What are your leadership roles on campus?

On campus, I love to immerse myself in a variety of clubs and activities. For the second year, I have been the president of Placer's Key Club! I am also the senior class president. I am involved with our CSF club and serve as the community outreach officer. In addition, I also love to participate in the Outdoor Environmental Club and the Creative Writing Creative Writing Club.

What are you looking forward to this year as you serve on the Board? This year, I am looking forward to playing an active role in representing my student body. I feel it is of the utmost importance to be a voice for my peers' opinions, concerns, and praises in bettering the ways our Board aims to serve our students. I am passionate about creating a more informed student body that has better access to our Board's initiatives. I feel that in order to have a seat at the table, one must always be well-versed in the subject; with that, in order to give students the opportunity to share their voices, they must first be well-informed.

What are your hobbies? Outside of school, I mostly spend my time with family and friends, typically in any setting that involves a body of water. I love to wake-surf, swim, boat, and ski when we are lucky enough to receive some good snow! One of my greatest ambitions for this year is to take up crafting, despite my very artistically challenged self. In particular, I hope to learn how to crochet! What is your favorite food? If I could eat one food for the rest of my life, I would never hesitate to say pasta. No matter the shape, size, sauce, or filling, I will always love and be able to finish a big bowl of pasta. I have been fixated on a specific pasta recipe that went viral online during the pandemic, the wonderful Spicy Vodka Pasta. Since then, I have incorporated that dish into my monthly meal plan, if not on several occasions.

Where is your favorite vacation destination? My favorite vacation destination is Cinque Terra in Italy. I visited when I was ten years old and have dreamed of going back ever since. I fell in love with the beautiful sight of the Mediterranean Sea and the rich culture filled with delicious food (especially the pasta), music, and kind people. I am currently planning my return with my sister to visit next summer after saving up for the last year. A long-time goal of mine has also always been to study abroad in Italy for a summer in college! What is an interesting fact about you that you'd like to share? One of my most interesting—yet embarrassing—stories has to be the time I got my finger stuck in a Homegoods shopping cart. Resulting in an entire team of firefighters assisting me in cutting my finger out with an electric saw. After trying quite literally everything and hours in the store, we were left with no other option but to call for help. Despite the unique and, at the time for 9-year-old me, humiliating circumstances I had landed myself in, it proved to be one of the funniest stories I tell to this day. Anything else you'd like to add? I am beyond honored to serve as a Student Board Member, and I look forward to a fantastic year!

Delany

What are your leadership roles on campus? At DO, my main leadership role is being one of the presidents of the Outdoor Adventure Club! We get to plan all of the trips the club takes and go on them too! My favorite trip with the club is our backpacking trip up to Island Lake in the Eastern Sierras. I also love going on snowshoeing trips in the winter. I am so looking forward to leading this club and getting more kids outside for another great year of adventures outdoors!

Death Valley Nat’l Park with friends

What are you looking forward to this year as you serve on the Board? I am looking forward to getting a look at how the governing body of the District functions! Attending Board meetings in the past has been super cool to see how the public is able to interact directly with the officials that are making the decisions that govern all of our student lives. I’m super excited to be able to participate more directly and gain insight into what good governance looks like. Also, I really want to help include student voices from all varieties of academic backgrounds in the conversation surrounding PUHSD.

What are your hobbies? Right now I am getting my private pilot’s license, so I basically spend all of my free time at the airport flying! I love to run, play piano, bake, sail, and read. I’ve also recently taken up indoor rock climbing which has been exciting. What is your favorite food? Anything involving capers! I love them on bagels, salad, fish- you name it, I’ll add capers. Where is your favorite vacation destination? Lyon France, Santa Cruz, and Llangollen Wales are definitely up there. What is an interesting fact about you that you'd like to share? I am an undefeated staring contest champion.

What are your leadership roles on campus? On campus, I currently serve as the CSF Club President, the LEOs Club President, the Colfax Model United Nation Club Secretary, the Yearbook Editor and Chief, the Chess Club Vice President, a Link Crew Leader, Leadership Media Captain, an IB Diploma Candidate, and I am a Varsity Tennis Player.

What are you looking forward to this year as you serve on the Board? This year I look forward to representing my fellow students' voices within the District and giving insight into the student experience at Colfax High School. In this position, I get to further my relationship with my peers, and I am incredibly excited to collaborate with them to make our school and district the best place they can be!

What are your hobbies? Hiking is one of my favorite ways to explore nature, as I love discovering new trails and exploring our local area more. I've made new friends through hiking who have pushed me to go on harder trails; and as much as I hate the elevation climb sometimes, I always end up loving it when we finish the hike. One of my favorite trails is the Jedidiah Loop trail; it's not too difficult of a hike and the views are gorgeous! I went during the fall as the leaves were changing and it made the hike all the more beautiful. What is your favorite food? My mom makes a Filipino dish called Chicken Adobo, which has been my favorite food since I was little. She makes a large amount every time so my family and I can have leftovers afterward, (although it doesn't last too long.) Every time I come home and smell her cooking the dish I am immediately put into a better mood! Where is your favorite vacation destination? My favorite vacation destination is either San Diego or New York. I have a lot of family in both of these places and every time I go I'm able to connect with people that I don't see that often. Whenever I go to San Diego my family and I usually drive down and it's always such a fun road trip especially when we veer onto the coast! What is an interesting fact about you that you'd like to share? An interesting fact about me is that I play the guitar and drums. When I was younger I was able to take some lessons before school and it became such a great way for me to have a creative outlet when schoolwork got a little overwhelming! Throughout the years I started getting busy with school and other extracurriculars so I put off playing, but towards the end of the last school year, I picked it up again. It has been such a great relearning experience for me especially when I go to concerts as I can better understand the music! Anything else you'd like to add? I'm beyond excited to start this year and I can't wait to work with my fellow board members!

What are your leadership roles on campus? At Foresthill High School, I currently serve as President of our FFA Chapter, Co- President of the National Honor Society, and Secretary of the Journalism Club. I am

also a member of the swim team and student council (ASB), as well as a spark leader! What are you looking forward to this year as you serve on the Board?

As I serve on the PUHSD board this year, I am looking forward to being able to provide a voice for Foresthill. Additionally, I am passionate about increasing the number of more rigorous course offerings on all campuses. What are your hobbies? In my free time, I love to play with my dog (a

chocolate lab named River), and go on road trips with my family! I also love to read, and one of my favorite books is “I am Malala”. What is your favorite food? My favorite food is definitely spaghetti (specifically the spaghetti my mom makes, it’s so good)! In terms of dessert food, I would have to say that my favorite dessert is apple pie (also the one that my mom makes) with vanilla ice cream. I also really love going to IKEA to get their Swedish meatballs with the little flag in them! :) Where is your favorite vacation destination? My favorite vacation destination is probably Montana. I have only been once with my family on a road trip, but it was one of the most beautiful areas that I have ever been to! The mountains were gorgeous, and there were fields everywhere full of cows (which I absolutely love). What is an interesting fact about you that you'd like to share? One interesting fact that I would like to share is that I have a goldfish named Ish who is 16 years old! I have had him since I was 18 months old. He got his name because I couldn’t pronounce the ‘f’ in ‘fish’ when I was little! Anything else you'd like to add? I am very grateful that I was provided the opportunity to serve on the Board, and I am so excited to represent Foresthill High School in this position! I hope everyone has a wonderful school year!

Our Competency-Based Education commitment is borne out of many educational experts' great work and research. Our goal is not to change, for change's sake, but to make changes to help improve our student’s learning. Here are some passages that resonate the “why” behind these efforts. “A grade is supposed to provide an accurate, undiluted indicator of a student's mastery of learning standards. That's it. It is not meant to be a part of a reward, motivation, or behavioral contract system. The grade is distorted by weaving in a student's personal behavior, character, and work habits, it cannot be used to successfully provide feedback, document progress, or inform our instructional decisions regarding the student the– three primary reasons we grade.” Rick Wormeli 2006 “Quantity should not trump quality. Grades should be based on what students know and can do, rather than how much work they can and will complete. Students should receive regular and specific feedback about what they know and don't know. Offering regular, specific feedback and grading that are based on learning and not behavior will have an immediate positive impact on a school.” Andy Fleenor 2011 “Visible teaching and learning occurs when learning is the explicit and transparent goal, when it is appropriately challenging, and when the teacher and the student both seek to ascertain whether and to what degree the challenging goal is attained. Visible teaching and learning occurs when there is a deliberate practice aimed at attaining mastery of the goal, when there is feedback given and sought, and when there are active, passionate, and engaging people participating in the act of learning. It is teachers seeing learning through the eyes of students and students seeing teaching as the key to their ongoing learning.” John Hattie Visible Learning

Foresthill High School turns 20!!!!

Foresthill High School opened in September of 2004 with a small group of 130 9th and 10th graders. Colfax High School was the youngest school in the District and then 45 years later, Foresthill was established. The high school sits on 110 acres which previously housed a timber mill. Twenty acres are jointly shared by the Foresthill Union School District, and about 50 acres of forested land which holds a great deal of future potential. It’s exciting for our District, the students and staff of Foresthill High School, and the community of Foresthill to have watched this campus flourish and grow over the past two decades!
