Our Competency-Based Education commitment is borne out of many educational experts' great work and research. Our goal is not to change, for change's sake, but to make changes to help improve our student’s learning. Here are some passages that resonate the “why” behind these efforts. “A grade is supposed to provide an accurate, undiluted indicator of a student's mastery of learning standards. That's it. It is not meant to be a part of a reward, motivation, or behavioral contract system. The grade is distorted by weaving in a student's personal behavior, character, and work habits, it cannot be used to successfully provide feedback, document progress, or inform our instructional decisions regarding the student the– three primary reasons we grade.” Rick Wormeli 2006 “Quantity should not trump quality. Grades should be based on what students know and can do, rather than how much work they can and will complete. Students should receive regular and specific feedback about what they know and don't know. Offering regular, specific feedback and grading that are based on learning and not behavior will have an immediate positive impact on a school.” Andy Fleenor 2011 “Visible teaching and learning occurs when learning is the explicit and transparent goal, when it is appropriately challenging, and when the teacher and the student both seek to ascertain whether and to what degree the challenging goal is attained. Visible teaching and learning occurs when there is a deliberate practice aimed at attaining mastery of the goal, when there is feedback given and sought, and when there are active, passionate, and engaging people participating in the act of learning. It is teachers seeing learning through the eyes of students and students seeing teaching as the key to their ongoing learning.” John Hattie Visible Learning
