From the Oval Office to Your Ears RELIVING THE 1960S THROUGH RICHARD GOODWIN’S EYES

“We shall overcome.”

the time and is filled with behind-the-scenes stories of the era’s presidents.

of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Americans, Cubans, and Russians, who had all been bitter enemies, enjoyed surprising camaraderie — except for the Russians, who weren’t having too much fun. Stories like these offer a humanizing glimpse into the history of this turbulent era, making it hard to put down. “An Unfinished Love Story” includes excerpts from Goodwin’s speeches, and there is no denying his incredible talent as a writer. The book highlights the power his words had on American history. I listened to the audiobook version, narrated by Doris Kearns Goodwin, a talented history writer in her own right, alongside actor Bryan Cranston. You’ll also get to hear real clips of some of the country’s most memorable speeches. Whether you choose to read or listen, you’ll gain an appreciation for the art of storytelling and the role of words in shaping political change. As we approach another presidential election, this book’s themes remind me of the vital importance of civic engagement and voting. Every election matters, and the heart of our democracy lies in free and fair elections where everyone’s voice can be heard. “An Unfinished Love Story” offers a timely glimpse into a pivotal era of our history while serving as a powerful call to action today. For anyone passionate about democracy or who simply loves ‘60s nostalgia, this book is a must-read or listen.

The famous words were etched into history on March 15, 1965, as President Lyndon Johnson delivered his “The American Promise” speech to Congress after law enforcement in Selma attacked civil rights demonstrators. Though the influential speech is synonymous with Johnson’s role in the Civil Rights Movement, the man behind the words was Richard (Dick) Goodwin.

I recently finished this book, and with the November election right around the corner, I thought it deeply resonated with some of what we are seeing in politics today. Its powerful stories put politics in perspective and highlight what people accomplished by working across the aisle, despite how different their opinions

and values may have been. Not only that, it’s a wonderful introduction to Richard Goodwin’s work. Some of this book’s most captivating elements are the rich anecdotes about Kennedy and Johnson that bring the political landscape of the 1960s and ‘70s to life. Goodwin’s stories show Johnson’s commitment to critical legislation like the Voting Rights Act and his softer side and character. Despite his often brash

Goodwin spent most of the 1960s as a close advisor and speechwriter to some of this country’s most influential leaders of the time, namely Johnson and President John F. Kennedy. He was incredibly bright and saw this amazing era of history through

the unique lens of the White House. For many years, he and his wife, who worked directly for Johnson as a White House fellow and wrote his biography, witnessed politics and the evolving ideals of America firsthand. Doris Kearns Goodwin has taken hundreds of boxes containing letters, diaries, documents, and memorabilia her late husband saved for over 50 years and woven them into an intimate portrait of the 1960s. “An Unfinished Love Story: A Personal History of the 1960s” is a memoir, biography, and history story all rolled into one. It’s a fascinating look at the politics of

persona, Johnson’s roots as a teacher in a small town shaped an empathy for the underprivileged. In one excerpt from the book, Goodwin shares that Johnson once used half his paycheck to help the town, revealing a more personal side to the president known for his hard-nosed tactics. The book also recounts the author and her husband’s unique memories of rubbing elbows with the political elite. In one fascinating tale, Robert Goodwin attended the 50th anniversary

The Rise of Keyless Door Locks

ARE THEY WORTH THE INVESTMENT?

Are you tired of constantly misplacing your keys or worrying about who can access your home? If so, consider switching to a keyless door lock system. These high-tech alternatives offer convenience and security but do have drawbacks. Before you make the change, let’s explore the pros and cons to help you decide if keyless locks are the right choice for your home.

your home. Choosing a high-quality, secure model and changing the code regularly is crucial to mitigate these risks.

THE FINANCIAL CONSIDERATION Another factor to consider is cost. Keyless locks tend to be more expensive than traditional deadbolts, ranging from $150–$250. Homeowners on a tight budget may find the price tag a deterrent, though the long-term convenience and security benefits could make it a worthwhile investment. THE DESIGN DILEMMA Finally, it’s worth considering the aesthetic impact of keyless locks. Many models prioritize function over form, resulting in bulky, unattractive hardware that can detract from the overall look of your entryway. If you’re a design-conscious homeowner, you may need to research to find a keyless lock that seamlessly blends with your home’s style. The decision to install a keyless door lock system depends on your needs, budget, and priorities. Weigh the pros and cons carefully, and don’t hesitate to consult a professional locksmith to ensure you make the best choice for your home.

UNLOCK THE CONVENIENCE One of the most appealing aspects of keyless locks is their

convenience. No more frantically searching for your keys when your hands are full — with a simple code, fob, or biometric scan, you can effortlessly access your home. This is especially helpful for household members with accessibility needs, who may find traditional keys difficult to manage. Keyless locks also make it easy to grant temporary access to trusted individuals, like dog walkers or housekeepers, without the hassle of making copies of physical keys. THE SECURITY CONUNDRUM While keyless locks offer an extra layer of security, they are not perfect. Tech-savvy criminals can hack them, and anyone can look over your shoulder to learn your code and gain unauthorized entry. If you forget the code or experience a power outage, you could be locked out of

HAVE A LAUGH

Though San Diego’s fall and winter may not bring snowstorms, it can still create tricky driving conditions, like slick roads during rain showers. As the weather changes, it’s the perfect time to ensure your vehicle is ready for a season of safe drives. From giving your car a tune-up to renewing your auto insurance, we’re sharing some of the best ways to prepare for the unexpected on the road ahead. TUNE UP YOUR VEHICLE. With all the rain this time of year, ensuring your vehicle is in good working order is essential. Check your tires to make sure they are fully inflated and the tread is in good condition. You’ll want to give your car a whole tune-up so your brakes, windshield wipers, defroster, heater, and exhaust system are up to speed. PLAN AHEAD. Inclement weather can change quickly, so it helps to plan ahead before your drive even begins. Pack extra blankets and mittens in the car in case you face any long delays on the road. You should also look at the weather predictions for the area you are heading to and give yourself extra time to travel, as there may be unexpected delays and reduced speed limits. Allow more distance between yourself and other vehicles because slick roads can be more challenging to slow down on. Visibility is typically lower during this time of year, so keep your windows clean and remain observant of other cars. RENEW YOUR INSURANCE. This is a great time to ensure your auto insurance is up to date and add additional coverage if needed. While California’s minimum coverage might seem like enough, it often falls short if you’re in an accident, particularly with an uninsured driver. Uninsured motorist coverage can give you an avenue to pay for injuries or damages sustained in an accident with an uninsured driver. By taking a little extra time to prepare your vehicle and review your insurance, you’ll be well-prepared for the cooler, rainier months ahead. Though winter weather in San Diego can be unpredictable, with the proper preparations, you’ll be smooth sailing through the whole season! FROM RESCUE TO RESCUER

Poncho’s Inspiring Story

In a heartwarming story of canine courage, a rescue dog named Poncho has emerged as a hero after putting his life on the line to defend his family during a home invasion. The events unfolded on a fateful night in early June when an intruder broke into Poncho’s home in northern New Mexico. Poncho, an 8-year-old rescue pup, sprang into action the moment the intruder entered the home. Without hesitation, the brave dog leaped at the would-be criminal, determined to protect his family at all costs. In the ensuing struggle, Poncho suffered a deep neck wound that miraculously missed his vital organs. But the attack didn’t stop there — the intruder then proceeded to kick Poncho repeatedly. Undeterred by his injuries, Poncho managed to hold the intruder at bay until others could intervene and restrain the criminal. Poncho’s family then embarked on a desperate two-

hour journey to Albuquerque, searching for emergency veterinary care.

sprang into action, performing extensive surgery to clean and repair Poncho’s traumatic neck wound. The brave pup stopped breathing at one point, but the veterinary team successfully revived him. Despite his severe injuries, Poncho has steadily regained his strength. His tail never stops wagging, and he responds enthusiastically whenever he hears the words “good boy.” Poncho’s dad promised him a lifetime of rib-eye steaks to reward his heroic actions. Poncho’s story is a powerful reminder of the unwavering loyalty and bravery rescue animals can possess. If you’re considering adding a furry friend to your family, consider visiting your local animal shelter or rescue organization. You never know — you might just find your very own guardian angel, just like Poncho’s family did.

Remarkably, the family ended up at the doorstep of Española Humane, the same rescue organization where they had adopted Poncho. The dedicated staff immediately
