GUIDEWIRE INTRODUCTION of a Long-Term MILACATH®
PEEL-AWAY INTRODUCTION of a Long-Term MILACATH®
PEEL-AWAY INTRODUCER: Cannulate the vein holding the stylet and peel-away sheath together with the handles flat against the skin. Confirm placement in the vein by a flashback of blood into the hub. Remove the stylet while stabilizing the introducer sheath.
INTRODUCER: Use the provided catheter- over-needle to cannulate the vein. Confirm placement in the vein by a flashback of blood into the stylet hub. Remove the needle.
1
1
CATHETER: Feed the catheter into the introducer sheath to the required depth.
GUIDEWIRE: Using the thumb notch, retract the curved "J" tip. Place the tip of the guidewire introducer into the catheter hub and feed the guidewire slowly using the thumb notch. **ALWAYS HOLD ON TO THE GUIDEWIRE** TISSUE DILATOR: Keeping the guidewire stable, remove the introducer catheter. Feed the dilator onto the guidewire. Pinch the skin proximal to the insertion site to create a skin tent and use firm pressure to introduce the dilator. Use the provided scalpel to make a small skin nick if needed. Do not feed the dilator and guidewire as one unit. CATHETER: Keeping the guidewire stable with your non-dominant hand, remove the dilator. Feed the catheter onto the wire, paying close attention to the wire as it exits the distal port. DO NOT INSERT THE CATHETER IF THE WIRE HAS NOT EXITED THE OTHER END. **ALWAYS HOLD ON TO THE GUIDEWIRE. ** Remove the guidewire. Secure the catheter in place with the included suture. Sutures through the wing eyelets should be pulled toward the insertion site. If the final indwelling depth is not at the catheter hub, use the included suture wing and blue clamp to secure the extended external length in place at the insertion site.
2
2
Hold catheter hub or extension set against the animal. Grasp the blue handles with both hands and snap away from the hub to break them apart. Gently pull the introducer sheath out of the insertion site ~0.5cm at a time. Pull the handles away from each other to tear the sheath apart. Take care to avoid splitting the peel-away directly at the insertion site. Once the peel-away has been completely split and removed, push the remainder of the catheter to the required depth.
3
3
4
4
Secure the catheter in place with the included suture. Sutures through the wing eyelets should be pulled toward the insertion site. If the final indwelling depth is not at the catheter hub, use the included suture wing and blue clamp to secure the extended external length in place at the insertion site.

• # 8200 - Neutral Displacement Injection Port (Stasis Valve) is a needle-free connector that prevents blood reflux into the catheter, reducing the risk of occlusion and eliminating the need to clamp the line when not in use; the saline flush option reduces risk, cost, and time associated with heparin use (heparin not required); allows for higher flow rate than the MicroClave® • # 8098 - MicroClave® is a normally closed, needle-free connector. Labeled for saline flush (heparin not required)

Needle-Free Connectors
Stasis Valve (Neutral Displacement Injection Port) • H elps to maintain catheter patency by preventing blood reflux and associated clotting at the catheter tip when a syringe or line is disconnected • Clear, closed, NEEDLE-FREE valve with a SWABABLE top for easy disinfecting • NO CLAMPING REQUIRED to control valve -induced reflux • HEPARIN NOT REQUIRED - saline flush option reduces risk, cost, and time associated with heparin use • Use in place of a three-way stopcock on chest tubes
RECOMMENDED FOR ALL APPLICATIONS
Flat access port is an easy to clean, smooth, swabable surface that serves as an infection control barrier.
Luer accepts BOTH luer lock and luer slip; DOES NOT permit needles. Transparent housing allows for visualization of residue after medication and flush.
Silicone valve absorbs and compensates for the pressure changes inside the catheter when connecting or disconnecting from a luer, preventing the reflux of blood into the catheter.
Reduce catheter-associated infections Reduce catheter occlusions Reduce dependency on sharps Reduce cost Stasis valve is included on many extension sets (listed below) and can also be purchased separately. (Item #8200 on page 19, cap with item #8099 on page 19)
Straight internal fluid pathway minimizes reflux and priming volume with low dead space.
