Mitchell served on numerous fraternity com- mittees and commissions. From 2015 until his passing, he represented the South- western Province on the Grand Chapter’s Achieve- ment Commission. In August 1985, Grand Polemarch Randal C. Bacon appointed Mitchell to lead the Southwestern Province as polemarch after the 66th Grand Chapter Meeting in Washington, DC. Mitch- ell served as Province Polemarch for four years, stepping down when the Grand Chapter elected him to the Grand Board of Directors in December 1989. Two years later, the Grand Chapter elected Mitchell as the Senior Grand Vice Polemarch where he served the Frater- nity for one term. Mitchell’s other organi- zation membership include: Texas Instruments Foun- dation Board of Directors, MIT Industrial Advisory Board on Minority Educa- tion, Dallas Urban League, Dallas Historical Society, YMCA of Dallas, National Society of Black Engineers Board of Directors, the Dallas Black Chamber Board, Inroads of Dallas Board of Directors, and the Concord Church. mater, Mitchell served on several university commit- tees including the PVAMU’s Industry Advisory Council, PVAMU Capital Campaign Steering Committee & Cabinet (2003-2009), and the President’s Advisory Council. Mitchell held mem- bership in Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, Alpha Epsilon Boulé where he chaired the Alpha Epsilon Foundation

for five years. He initiated the mentoring program for the Foundation and assigned members to serve as mentors to scholars with career experience in the area they planned to pursue. He also began the process of meeting with the school counselors to identify eligi- ble and worthy candidates for the generous schol- arships and to meet with the potential scholarship

recipients. Brother James Mitchell is predeceased by his parents, wife, the former Arnetta Jef- ferson, and daughter Misty Mitchell Lankford. He is survived by his wife Vickie Richie, grandson Cedric Langford, Jr., granddaugh- ter Paige Lankford, sister Loyce Henry, L.C. Mitchell, Marie Hardwell, and a host of relatives, friends, and acquaintances. ♦
