The Power of Momentum EXPLORING TIPPING POINTS AND BASEBALL GREATS

Momentum is a force that can shape society and sports, turning small shifts into sweeping changes and players into legends. Two of my most recent reads focus on the profound impact of pivotal moments in very different ways. “Revenge of the Tipping Point” explores how tiny actions and decisions can be the “tipping point” for societal change, while “The Baseball 100” tells the stories of the athletes whose contributions changed the game forever. Both books reveal how seemingly isolated moments — a cultural shift or a historic home run — can echo far beyond their origins and ignite lasting change on the field or in the world. ‘REVENGE OF THE TIPPING POINT’ “Revenge of the Tipping Point: Overstories, Superspreaders, and the Rise of Social Engineering” is Malcolm Gladwell’s latest book. It explores social epidemics — like the rise of social engineering and COVID-19 — and tipping points, the forces that drive them in our world. Gladwell masterfully weaves fascinating stories and surprising data throughout the book to examine how social contagion has evolved. One story that stuck with me is the impact of women on corporate boards. Gladwell’s data shows minimal effect or change when one or two women were added to an all-male board. However, adding three women, making the board 22% to 33% female, can drive meaningful change in perspectives and decision-making. This “magic third” is the fraction of a social

group needed to make change happen. The book explores social dynamics like the dangers of overly uniform environments, like schools prioritizing singular excellence but unintentionally fostering high stress and mental health issues. Gladwell also examines practical solutions for our largest global challenges and how we can restore balance in turbulent times. The book focuses on how individuals can use power and influence to shape society’s narratives. What I enjoyed about this book is the author’s knack for taking complex ideas and making them relatable and thought-provoking. The stories and rigorous data he utilizes offer a lens through which to view any effort to create meaningful change. This book is a brilliant reminder of the power of the tipping points around us and a must-read for anyone who wants to explore the mechanics of change. ‘THE BASEBALL 100’ “The Baseball 100” by Joe Posnanski is a well- written journey through America’s sports history, looking at the greatest baseball players ever. It goes beyond their rankings and athletic feats; it gets to the heart of what it took for these players to succeed. The book delves into how these legends became greats, many of which are classic stories of fathers (or father figures) and sons. It gives the reader a complete and heartfelt history of the sport, but the human moments make the book stand out.

What’s most notable about this book is that it emphasizes that talent alone was often insufficient to succeed in baseball. Many players persevered through difficult times, embodying a spirit of grit and determination. Even that was sometimes not enough. Posnanski covers the greats who played in the segregated Negro Leagues, men whose incredible talents and careers were overlooked by so many. He highlights widely untold stories of athletes like Josh Gibson, often called the “Black Babe Ruth,” who never received the same recognition as their white counterparts. All at once, this book is a love letter to America’s favorite pastime, a history lesson, a ranking of great athletes, and a story about how hard work can pay off in home runs and legacy. Though baseball fans may debate the rankings, it’s a rich tribute to the game and the players. If you love the sport, it provides stories and insights you may not have heard. And, if you aren’t a sports fan, you’ll still enjoy the fascinating history and tales of resilience that stretch beyond the field.

HOW TO BECOME A TIDIER PERSON Declutter Your Life

If the top of your desk looks like a photo op for an “I Spy” book, chances are you could benefit from tidying up. It isn’t easy saying goodbye to your familiar clutter, but it’s for the better. A messy environment can be stressful and frustrating, as it makes finding anything more difficult and worsens the overall attractiveness of your home. While change can be challenging, it is worth the effort for your home and health. FIRST THING’S FIRST Growing up, your mom probably reminded you to make your bed. There is a good reason to prioritize that first thing in the morning, as it helps set an intention to accomplish the little things and get your day off to a more productive start. It also contributes to better sleep hygiene; a cluttered bedroom and undone bed could be hindering your sleep. So, eliminating

potential distractions, including an unmade bed, could enhance your sleep.

CLEAN SLATE Keeping a clean home can help you be more physically fit. According to a study by Indiana University, a tidier living space contributes to higher levels of physical activity. Keeping things clean means keeping active, and even if you don’t exercise for 30 minutes daily, 30 minutes of vacuuming or any kind of scrubbing is still a great way to keep yourself moving. DAILY DECLUTTER While tidying up the home may seem daunting at first, it can be much easier if you break it down into smaller tasks. Doing a bit of laundry every other day helps prevent you from having to do a massive load later. Picking up around the

kitchen when you get a snack or cook a meal can prevent that space from looking like a scene out of “Kitchen Nightmares.” Wherever you go in your home, if you pick up a thing or two cluttering the area and put it away, you are well on your way to becoming a neater person.

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS FOR THE ROAD Drive Into 2025 With Safety First

I WILL NEVER DRIVE IMPAIRED. Driving while impaired, whether you are intoxicated, tired, or on medications, is illegal and often deadly. In 2022, drunk driving killed more than 13,000 people, and when you drive on only 4–5 hours of sleep, you are four times more likely to crash. If you will be drinking, always plan and call for a ride. Never get behind the wheel if you have had even one drink. We all have to get to and from places, but if you feel fatigued, call an Uber. I WILL TAKE CARE OF MY CAR. Though it’s easy to let warning symbols on your car go unchecked, regular maintenance is crucial to keeping your vehicle running correctly. Make sure you take your car in for regular check-ups and oil changes and address any issues as soon as possible. Taking care of your vehicle also helps prevent accidents

As we kick off the new year, road safety should be at the top of every driver’s list this year, ensuring everyone on the road is out of harm’s way. Whether you are a daily commuter or just go out on the occasional cruise, little changes can make a big difference in being a responsible driver. From regularly maintaining your vehicle to committing not to drink and drive, here are three easy road resolutions to start 2025 safe and sound.

from occurring. Make this the year you create an emergency kit with essentials like flashlights, a first-aid kit, and jumper cables to store in your car. I WILL NOT DRIVE DISTRACTED. Smartphones, radios, and rowdy passengers are dangerous distractions that can lead to crashes. Resolve to give driving your full attention when you are behind the wheel. Set your phone out of reach or turn it off while driving. If you need to change the radio station or check your GPS, use a hands-free device or safely pull over. As we prepare to achieve our New Year’s resolutions this year, safe driving should be on every driver’s list of goals. By resolving to focus, maintain our cars, and never drive impaired, we help make the road a safer place for everyone.

HAVE A LAUGH

When you have been injured in an accident or due to someone’s negligence, one of the first things you may wonder is how you’ll pay the medical bills and other costs. Personal injury settlements can cover damages like medical costs, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other expenses related to your injuries. This agreement is usually determined outside the courtroom and frees the at-fault party from liability in exchange for a financial payment. It’s beneficial to understand how the process works so you can focus on healing. HOW DO SETTLEMENTS WORK? When you start working with a lawyer, they will evaluate the case details, looking at the extent of your injuries and the circumstances leading to the incident. They will conduct an investigation, gathering evidence like medical records, police reports, any photos you may have of the event, and other essential documents. Once all the details are clear, your lawyer will send a demand letter to the at-fault party or their insurance company, laying out the facts of the case, your damages, and how much money you seek to cover your expenses. Your lawyer will negotiate with the at-fault party’s team until they reach a fair settlement amount. A settlement agreement is then created and signed by all parties, followed by payment to the injured person. The settlement can be paid as a lump sum or in payments. HOW MUCH WILL I RECEIVE? Various expenses can go into your final settlement amount. When your lawyer calculates your settlement, they will examine your medical costs, like doctor bills, surgeries, and post-op treatments. They will also consider estimated future costs for ongoing medical care or the long-term effects this injury will have on your life. Other factors that may contribute to your final dollar amount are lost wages and pain and suffering. Understanding how personal injury settlements work can help ease the stress and ensure you receive the compensation you deserve to heal. This process can be nuanced, so working with an experienced personal injury lawyer provides the proper support and guidance. How a Kitten Helped Samson Unleash His Inner Pup

Golden retriever Samson takes his job as a medical service response dog very seriously, maybe even too seriously. For owner Lea Hendy, it became apparent quickly that the loveable giant didn’t know how to dog. On their days off at the dog park, Samson was the odd man out, sitting alone in the corner while the other pups played. It seemed like he couldn’t turn off work mode or form bonds with other dogs. Samson joined Lea’s family to train as a service dog. When she noticed his seeming lack of social skills with other dogs, she was determined to find a way to bring him out of his shell. Little did she know that a chance encounter with a cat would change everything. While they were out traveling, Samson spotted a kitten in the window of a building and immediately wanted to play. It was an “aha!” moment that Samson could indeed make deep bonds; it just had to be with the

“It was so heartwarming to see him come out of his shell and immediately form a connection with Cleo,” Lea said. Now, the pair spend every moment they can together, playing, napping, and enjoying each other’s company. Cleo has become an avid adventurer since the family started taking her on hikes. When the kitty tires out, she takes a ride on her older brother Samson, who looks so proud to be transporting his sister. Cleo, a tiny kitten with a big heart, allowed Samson, a workaholic looking for a friend, to break out of his shell and explore his world in ways his family never thought possible. Now, thousands of people worldwide watch their friendship and adventures on the animal-odd couple’s Instagram page @calvin.andco .

right animal. A couple of months later, they brought home a tiny kitten named Cleo, and the instant friendship surprised everyone. They gently placed the backpack with the little kitten inside in the middle of the room, and Samson immediately sprung into excited barks and tail wags. Lea said they were never expecting him to be so excited about his new friend, and the two have been inseparable since.

“It shows that friendship has no bounds,” Lea said. “Anyone can be friends.”
