Boasting the competitive pricing and technical expertise of its multinational parent group, SIG Belfast also offers the personal touch of a hands-on trade counter team. A supplier of specialist products to the Irish construction industry for more than 30 years, SIG Ireland is a subsidiary of SIG plc. It employs 320 people including a dedicated Technical Team and 70 staff at sites in Belfast, Omagh, Dublin, Cork and Limerick. Staff at its Belfast’s branch total 12-14 members, including third- party drivers and a trade counter team with experience ranging from six to more than 20 years in the sector. Patrick McCullough, Operations Manager of SIG Ireland, said, “A lot of the branches are similar in size, and what’s good about that is you’re not ringing into a call centre environment. You’re getting someone you know and everyone in our team deals with customers on the phone and at the trade counter, creating unique relationships. “We have bags of experience, and then our Technical Team in the background to ensure customers are getting the right product at the right specification to comply with Building Control standards. Our Technical Team is a standalone department and delivers calculations
and specifications to meet customers’ exact needs. “We’re the largest provider of specialist building products within the island of Ireland. We supply world-class brands and offer technical expertise unparalleled within the construction industry.” SIG Belfast carries around 1,000 key lines, while more bespoke products can be quickly sourced from the other branches, including its regional distribution centre in Dublin which carries more than 20,000 lines. Conveniently located in Balmoral Industrial Estate, the 50,000sqft Belfast branch includes Interiors, Insulation, Construction Accessories, Roofing and Facades divisions. “We are a one-stop shop from groundwork all the way up to the roof, supplying absolutely every product you would need on any build,” said Patrick. “Last year, we had close to 3,000 deliveries and over 6,000 collections, just out of Belfast.” Ongoing investment in the site includes the creation of a new Roofing showroom and Training Academy, which hosts staff training in new products. “We also bring in customers and show them new products coming on board, and how those products are going to benefit them and service their requirements,”
said Patrick. “For example, the Grenfell tragedy has really pushed a requirement for more stringent fire protection in
facades and other products.” Northern Ireland deliveries are
geographically split between SIG’s two branches in the region, with SIG Belfast operating a fleet of three branded truck- mounted forklifts and an SHD van able to navigate narrow streets for emergency deliveries. “If a customer rings in an order right up to 2pm and we have the stock here, they’re going to get that the next day,” said Patrick. “That’s the service we deliver, and we use Descartes delivery route planning software allowing customers to receive text messages and track the delivery vehicle right to their door.” SIG Belfast also offers a unique service aimed at speeding up collection with each customer allocated a parking bay upon arrival, to which their order is picked and delivered by the trade counter team. The efficient system has reduced collection time to 8-10 minutes, or down to five minutes for orders phoned in prior to arrival. 6-8 Balmoral Road, Balmoral Industrial
