BELFAST GRAND CENTRAL STATION

DELIVERING THE £340M BELFAST GRAND CENTRAL STATION

FOSTERING AN AWARD-WINNING CULTURE OF COLLABORATION AND SUPPORTING LOCAL SUB-CONTRACTORS AND SUPPLIERS, FARRANS SACYR JV HAS COMPLETED THE CENTREPIECE OF THE WEAVERS CROSS REGENERATION PROJECT…

Representing the largest integrated transport hub on the island of Ireland, the new £340m Belfast Grand Central Station is also among the single biggest investments of any kind in Northern Ireland. Farrans Sacyr Joint Venture (JV) was appointed as lead contractor for the main construction project, tasked with creating a new multi-modal transport hub to replace the existing Europa and Great Victoria Street bus and rail stations. The contractor’s successful history of working on important infrastructure projects also includes delivering Edinburgh Trams to Newhaven for City of Edinburgh Council. Belfast Grand Central Station is

part of the eight-hectare Weavers Cross development, a transport-led regeneration project which includes mixed-use development proposals and is aiming to attract 50,000 new jobs and £1bn investment into the city. Client Translink anticipates Belfast Grand Central Station will serve 20 million journeys per year by 2040. Site preparation works were completed by GRAHAM Civil Engineering over 18 months and included site clearance, utility diversions, ecology surveys, ground remediation, watercourse and drainage activities. Commencing in February 2022, Farrans Sacyr JV led construction of the new interchange, which comprises a station

concourse, 26 bus stands, eight railway platforms, bus maintenance and parking, a bus access bridge, cycle and taxi provision and car parking. Also entailed in the project were the new Saltwater Public Square; public realm, highway and infrastructure improvements; temporary structures for bus operations during construction; and temporary site construction compounds. Duane McCreadie, Project Director, said, “Farrans Sacyr JV was contracted to construct the main works elements on the Belfast Grand Central Station project, which included the main building, platform construction and site-wide civils including upgrading the local road network.

“Challenges were faced together to ensure the best project decisions were always at the heart of what we did.”
