PROJECT PROFILE

BELFAST GRAND CENTRAL STATION

“The project was handed over on time, on budget, to a high standard of quality and with one million hours worked without a reportable accident.”

“The project was constructed in one of the most notable, globally-challenging periods we can remember, including Covid, the Ukraine War, very high inflation and the construction skills gap. “Delivering this project on time and on budget is a testament that a genuinely collaborative culture can ensure client and contractors work together when faced with significant challenges to generate the best project outcomes.” Indeed, such was the success of its collaboration, the project saw Farrans Sacyr JV recognised as Team of the Year at the Irish News Workplace and Employment Awards 2024.

with most of the products and supply chain sourced within 50 miles of the site, where this was possible from a capacity or specification point of view,” said Duane. “We also used a lot of off-site manufacturing including fully-complete manholes and platform retaining walls, and tried to ensure our products were environmentally friendly, for example using recyclable piling mat, which was significant for the size of the building.” Sustainability informed the overall project, with environmental sustainability a focus of both the construction process and initiatives incorporated throughout the station. Community outreach activities, meanwhile, included a careers’ open day for 75 female students from five city schools on the construction site to inspire the next generation. Phase one of the project opened in September 2024, with public realm works surrounding the new station set to continue through 2025. “Belfast Grand Central Station provided a refreshing approach to construction,” said

Duane. “We were part of a collaborative team with our client and other project partners. Challenges were faced together to ensure the best project decisions were always at the heart of what we did. “The project was handed over on time, on budget, to a high standard of quality and with one million hours worked without a reportable accident.” John Glass, Director of Infrastructure and Projects at Translink, said, “Farrans- Sacyr JV delivered the Grand Central Station successfully, as a direct result of the importance they placed upon a collaborative working culture.” Client: Translink Main contractor: Farrans Sacyr JV Architect: John McAslan + Partners Design & structural engineer: Arup M&E contractor: Dowds Group Rail infrastructure contractor: Babcock PROJECT TEAM...
