BELFAST GRAND CENTRAL STATION

WORKING IN CLOSE CO-ORDINATION WITH MAIN CONTRACTOR FARRANS SACYR JV AND 100 SUPPLIERS, DOWDS GROUP HAS DELIVERED A £14M MEP PACKAGE AT BELFAST GRAND CENTRAL STATION… MEP CONTRACTOR

Dowds Group was contracted by Farrans Sacyr JV to deliver a £14m full MEP package at Belfast Grand Central Station. Included in its scope of services were LV distribution and switchgear, a full security package including external car park systems, AC units and roof-mounted PV systems. Dowds also installed customer information screens for train and bus schedules, and integrated NaviLens wayfinding technology, a user-friendly GPS app aiding safe access throughout the building for blind, deafblind and partially-sighted visitors. The scale of the new transport hub provided numerous technical challenges for the design and installation of MEP services, particularly around the rail platforms and large concourse spaces. Dowds ensured all works on platforms were completed safely with the necessary safety critical protection and controls in place in compliance with the Northern Ireland Railway Rulebook.

With Dowds’ building services team and supply chain swelling to 300 operatives and over 100 suppliers, co-ordination with Farrans-Sacyr’s design team was vital and the main contractor operated a robust booking system for dropping off materials. Malachy Molloy, Operations Manager, said, “Farrans-Sacyr’s direct contact with Translink enabled us to set up end-user training and demonstrations of the systems we installed. This allowed us to provide an effective handover to the client and ensured all building users understood how the systems are best used.” Dowds exceeded ambitious social values targets, contributing over 1,300 social value points on the project, including over 140 hours of environmental initiatives such as renewable energy power supply management and environmental benchmarking. “For Dowds Group, this was our first ever transportation project and it was

a privilege to be involved in yet another major project of this scale in Belfast following our involvement in successfully completing the full £24m electrical package for the new Ulster University Belfast campus,” said Malachy.
