and the importance of collaboration in addressing industry challenges. While successes include funding to support more female apprentices secured by WOMEN’STEC alongside partner agencies, more needs to be done to market career opportunities to girls from a young age and target, for example, disadvantaged communities. Further presentations included Hays Senior Business Manager Chris McNamara, who identified recruitment as the biggest challenge for employers, with research suggesting three-quarters of firms are prepared to hire employees requiring upskilling. Attendees also heard about the first Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE) new-build scheme in 25 years, a PassivHaus scheme at Sunningdale Gardens in Belfast. Career opportunities with NIHE were
outlined by Head of Learning and Organisational Development Sophie Irwin, who highlighted the advantages of apprenticeships versus the burden of student debt. NIHE apprentices can progress through levels one to six without any cost, she said, with its 2025 intake opportunities including seven asset management HLAs, nine housing graduate programme roles and 12 trade positions in plumbing, electrical and joinery. Event attendees included people already working in a wide range of roles across the construction sector, who also learned about the benefits of CIOB membership, including career progression opportunities, access to a wealth of CPD resources and invitations to numerous networking events.
