WE’RE OFF TO ENGLAND! I CAN’T WAIT TO LEARN ABOUT MY ANCESTORS! Family means everything to me — if you’ve been here for any amount of time, I don’t think this will surprise you. I always strive to make the most of any time I can spend with my wife, kids, and other relatives. My family is my rock, and they helped shape me into who I am today. While I love spending time and creating memories with my loved ones, I also enjoy learning about my ancestors and our origins. We all have ancestors who paved the way for us. None of us would be here today if it weren’t for them! And because of this, I love learning more about my lineage and understanding where my family and I came from. During my free time, I enjoy going on the free FamilySearch.org to do genealogy work and volunteer by indexing handwritten records. It’s fascinating to see family trees and learn more about my ancestors! Some of my relatives love to trace our history and have even traveled worldwide to research our heritage and take pictures of our family members’ homes, artifacts, and grave sites. Most of my ancestors come from England — I have a map that outlines all the cities my family used to live in. And as I learned more about them, I began to wonder what it would be like to venture to England and walk on the same roads my ancestors traveled or see the churches where they worshipped. Doing this would allow me to form a deeper connection and appreciation for where I came from. That day has finally come — Jessica and I are traveling to England this month for my 40th birthday! As you read this newsletter, we may already be across the pond and traveling around England! We’re excited for our first overseas trip together and we’re even going sans kids. I’m looking forward to this journey and the destinations and activities we have planned. We’re focusing mainly on Southwest England because most of my ancestors lived there. We’ll arrive in London, then travel to Bath, Bristol, Thornbury, the Cotswolds, and back to London.

In Bath, we’ll see the ancient Roman baths and architecture; in Bristol, we’ll visit shipyards and think about what it would’ve been like for my ancestors to leave their homeland by ship; and in Thornbury, we’ll tour Thornbury Castle because my lineage can be traced back to the 1300s, I even have royal blood running through my veins! According to my family’s research, I may be related to the infamous King Henry VIII, who stayed at Thornbury Castle while on his honeymoon with Anne Boleyn. Time permitting, we’ll also visit Stonehenge because everyone says it’s a must-do when in England. Then we’ll rent a car to drive around the Costwolds region where many of my ancestors lived. Although I’m nervous about driving on the opposite side of the road (and on the opposite side of the car), I’m looking forward to where this journey takes us — hopefully to many quaint, picturesque little towns filled with English cottages and gardens. We’ll visit some cemeteries where I believe ancestors are buried and some towns that have buildings or areas bearing my family names of Brooks and Hurst. We’ll also visit Stratford-Upon-Avon, the birthplace and hometown of William Shakespeare and his wife. It will be so surreal to follow in my family’s footsteps. I can’t wait to see what I learn about myself and my lineage! But on top of traveling to places my ancestors used to live, Jessica and I will partake in some typical tourist sites in London before heading home. I can’t wait to share pictures and more about our experiences during your next dental visit! Do you know your family’s lineage? I would love to learn more about you and your ancestors.

5 RISK FACTORS TO CONSIDER What Is Periodontal Disease?

CHECK OUT SOME OF AMERICA’S BEST ZOOS Summer is one of the best times of the year to travel. Kids are out of school and want to do something fun every weekend, which can be difficult to accommodate if you’ve already exhausted your local options. If you’re looking to travel, you can visit a beach, take in the sights and sounds of an amusement park, or spend some time with animals while visiting a zoo. Nearly every state in our country has a handful of zoos or aquariums, but some stand above the rest. Monkey Around This Summer

Periodontal disease (periodontitis) is a gum infection that damages not only your gums but also your jawbone and soft tissue around your teeth. Periodontitis affects over half of the adults in the U.S. But unfortunately, many people are unaware they have it. Although periodontitis is widespread and affects millions, it is preventable and treatable! However, to find a treatment or prevention method, we must look at the risk factors that play a role in how severe periodontitis is in your situation. Here are the five risk factors for periodontal disease and how they can affect you. AGE According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 70% of Americans 65 and older have periodontitis. This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise because as you age, your gums naturally recede. When this happens, your mouth cannot produce enough saliva to neutralize bacteria and protect your teeth. SMOKING It’s no secret that using tobacco/nicotine products harms your health. But did you know smoking is one of the highest risk factors for periodontal disease? Therefore, we highly recommend that you refrain from smoking, but if you do, it’s best to invest in oral health care products that will keep your mouth, teeth, and gums in good shape. GENETICS If your family has a history of gum disease, it’s vital that you share this information with your dentist. If your dentist knows that periodontitis runs in your family, they can take preventive measures to keep the disease from spreading. MEDICATION AND NUTRITION If you suffer from other diseases, your gums are already compromised, meaning you are at a higher risk of periodontal disease. Furthermore, the medications you take also affect your oral health. Additionally, if you have poor nutrition and a diet that lacks the proper nutrients, you could be at risk of periodontitis. This is because your body’s immune system cannot fight off infections — and periodontal disease initially starts as an infection. Don’t let these risk factors scare you! We understand this information can be alarming, but we promise treatment options are available to treat and prevent periodontitis from spreading. If you have any questions or concerns about your oral health, please don’t hesitate to call us. We are happy to assist with whatever you may need!

Here are three of the best zoos you can visit in the U.S. — aside from the Cincinnati Zoo, of course!

OMAHA’S HENRY DOORLY ZOO AND AQUARIUM The Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium in Omaha, Nebraska, is consistently ranked as one of the top five zoos in the world. It prides itself on hosting rare, endangered animals you can’t see elsewhere. It has the world’s largest nocturnal exhibit, and one of the major highlights is the Desert Dome, an 84,000-square-foot indoor desert that maintains an authentic desert ecosystem. This is a must-visit for any animal lover in your family. THE BRONX ZOO You don’t usually think about seeing exotic animals when you visit New York City, but the Bronx Zoo is one of the best places to view animals in America. Opened in 1899, the Bronx Zoo is responsible for many of the advancements relating to animal captivity. This was one of the first zoos to ditch cages for natural environments and create an animal hospital. With over 6,000 species, there’s an animal for everyone at the Bronx Zoo.

THE LIVING DESERT ZOO AND GARDENS While the San Diego Zoo is often boasted as California’s largest and best zoo, another zoo is worth checking out. The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens outside Palm Springs has entertained visitors

for decades. There are events at this zoo every day, one of the most popular being the keeper connections and animal encounters, where you get up close and personal with the animals while learning more about their habitats and lifestyles.

MASTER THE WAVES OCEAN ACTIVITIES THE ENTIRE FAMILY WILL LOVE

Summer has finally arrived, and many of us will be going on weeklong excursions to the coast to get some much-needed rest and relaxation by the beach. For years, the beach has been one of the most popular summertime destinations for Americans, with millions of us flocking to the coast every year. If you’re planning to hit the sand this summer, you should prepare some exciting activities, so you and your family or travel partners can create memories that will last a lifetime.

finances required to go on an excursion. That being said, you can get pretty close to the scuba- diving experience by snorkeling. Using a snorkel in the ocean, especially in flat water, is a great way to explore the underwater world. You’ll be able to spot fish, crustaceans, and other sea life without needing extensive training. Those who regularly go snorkeling see it as a form of therapy that helps them relieve stress and anxiety. Feeling more relaxed and at peace will help make your vacation feel even more magical. GRAB A BOARD. If you want to experience something slightly more intense, you can try some of the many ocean activities involving a board. First-time ocean-goers will love using a boogie board or bodyboard to

ride the waves into shore. Those who are more experienced may enjoy surfing for the first time or renting a standing paddleboard. Many beaches on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts have paddleboard rentals or surfing lessons. Be on the lookout at your vacation destination if you want to take advantage of these exciting activities. TOUR THE OCEAN. You may want to get away from the beach and experience open waters beyond the shore. If that’s the case, you’ll want to see if your vacation destination offers glass-bottom boat or submarine tours. Some beaches even have whale-watching adventures, which provide an excellent opportunity to see some of nature’s largest creatures in their natural habitat.

Here are a few oceanside activities you’ll want to check out on your vacation.
