Sharing the Profits I have been enjoying T h e K in g ’ s B u s in e s s for almost three years. I think it is one of the most profitable o f all maga zines for the home. I have been able to secure four trial sub scriptions for which I enclose one dollar. —From Steinbach, Man., Canada.

Prepare an outline on some verse or verses in the chap ter. Expression

TN this portion of the gospel; we have presented a revelation of Christ as Master and Lord in three different realms. In John 1:35-51, He reveals Himself as a master in the 'field of sociology, the One who is able to influence and change the lives of men. In John 2:1-12, He shows His mastery in the field of chem istry, transforming the very elements themselves. In John 2 :12-25, He is seen as a master in the field of religion, the One who, by His authority and position, has. the right to drive from His Father’s house that which is sinful. Preparation Read John 1:35 to 2:25 each day this week. Monday Work out a brief outline of each of the three main sections of the chapter.

The following outlines are intended to suggest how a more or less formal mes sage may be prepared from the subject matter of this chapter. C h r is t t h e R evealer o f G od John 1:l-5 A sublime passage presenting Christ in a fivefold relationship. 1. Relationship to Time. “In the beginning was the Word”— Eternity. John 17 :5—“before the world was.” Heb. 13:8—“the same yesterday, and today and for ever.” Isa. 44:6; Rev. 1:17—“first and last.” 2. Relationship to God. a. “The word was with God”— Per sonality. John 17:5—“I . . . with thee.” b. “The word was God”— Deity. Col. 2:9—“In him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bod ily", Heb. 1 :8—“But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever.” , 3. Relationship to the Universe. “All things were made by him, and without him was not anything made that was made”— Creativity. ' Heb. 1 :10—“And, thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foun dation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands.” Col. 1:16—“For by him were all things created.”- 4. Relationship to Man. a. “Light shineth in darkness”— Incar nation. Isa. 9 :2—'“The people that walked in darkness have seen a great ■ light.” John 3:19—“Light is come into the world.” b. “Light was the life of men”—Sol- *71/7 Psa. 27:1—“The Lord is my light and my salvation.” John 8 :12—“I am the light of the world; he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” , John 12:46—“I am come a light into the world that whosoever be- lieveth on me should not abide in darkness.” 5. Relationship to Sin. “The light shineth in darkness; and the darkness apprehended it not”— Condemnation. John 3:19—“This is the condem nation that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.” John 11:10—“If any man walk in the night, he stumbleth because there is no light in him.” * * * Q u a l it ie s of a T r u e W it n e s s for C h r is t John 1 :6-8; 19-34 1. He Is God-Touched (v. 6). 2. He Is Faithful (v. 7).

3. He Is Christ-Honoring (v. IS). 4. He Is Honest (vs. 19-24). 5". He Is Humble (v. 27). • 6. He Proclaims Christ as Saviour (v. 29). 7. He Proclaims Christ as God. (v. 34). Discussion 1. Discuss the mystery, power, and positive displacing qualities of Jesus Christ as characterized by the three names: , a. The Word (v. 1). b. The Light (vs. 3, 4, 7-9). c. The Life (v. 4). Note the threefold work of Christ to match each of these names. a. Creation—outcome of His nature as Word (v. 3). b. Enlightenment—outcome of His light-giving power (v. 9). c. New birth—outcome of His life- giving power (vs. 12, 13). How does this activity of Christ concern us today? 2. Discuss the position of Christ in His relationship to God. How do you ex plain the fact that He is both a distinct person from God the Father, and also that He is God (John 1:1, 2, 18; Isa. 9:6; 1 Tim. 3:16; Matt. 1:23)? Is it possible to know God except through Christ (John 14:6, 7)? Are Christ, and God the Fa ther, one (John 14:8-11; Col. 2:9)? Does Christ claim to be God (John 10:30) ? 3. Is it God’s will that any should be lost? Study verses 4, 5, 11, and 12, with verses 3 and 19. Do all men have an op portunity to accept the truth (John 1 :9, 10; Rom. 1:18-25)? : 4. How is it possible to become a child of God (John 1:12; Gal. 3:26; John 5: 24) ? What does it mean to “hear,” to “believe,” and to “receive” ? Is it possible to be saved in any other way than through the acceptance of Christ (Acts 4:12; John 14:6) ? Can we work our way into heaven (Eph. 2:8, 9; Titus 3:5)? 5. Discuss the characteristics of John the Baptist as suggested in the second outline. 6. Discuss the statement made by John the Baptist in John 1:29. What con nection do you see between the statement of John and the prophecy in Isaiah 53: 3-7, 10, 11? Is this reference to Christ as the Lamb of God merely an expression used to denote His meekness, or is it something more? Study 1 Peter 1:18, 19; 2:24. 7. Can you suggest three other prac tical applications which may be made of any of the material to be found in this week’s lesson ?

Und e r l i n e all a c tio n phrases that strike you as important. Select and memorize one or more of the outstand ing verses. Make a detailed study of 1 :35-51, noting Christ’s ap proach to each man. Write out three practical lessons that can be drawn from the miracle of turn ing the water into wine. Study the analogy between Christ’s cleansing of the temple in Jerusalem and tbe statements found in 1 Corinthians 6:19 and 2 Corinthians 6:16. Using some portion of the scripture for this week as a basis, prepare a personal testimony to be used on the first occasion that pre
