as to conquer him. We see just what weapons He used in His victorious con flicts- He used His Bible as a quiver, and He drew from it the sharp arrows which He hurled so successfully against His op ponent. We notice, too, that He drew them from memory. This shows that He had made the Scriptures a study in the quiet days at Nazareth, so that when He needed them, they were ready. The les son for us lies on the surface. If we would be ready to meet the assaults of the tempter, we must have our quiver filled with the polished shafts of Scrip ture. We must have the words of the holy Book laid away in reserve in our hearts . . . A single text taken by itself may not give us the whole mind of the Spirit on any subj ect ;■it may be necessary to take other passages, presenting other phases of the truth, in order to get the whole truth. Here the case is very plain and very instructive. The devil had quot ed a sublime promise, but had distorted it, omitting the qualifying or limiting words in it. It is very true that God gives His angels charge over u s; but it is true also that, to get this heavenly care and protection, we must walk in the ways of obedience and duty.—/. R. Miller. There was a transforming vision behind Isaiah’s vow. He had seen the majesty of God. He had seen the uncleanness of his own nature. He had seen the cleansing mercy of heaven. It was this which prompted his dedication. Am I conversant with his threefold vision? I must not attempt to speak and labor for God till I have it. From the secret place, I must come out to. serve. There was an unqualified gift wrapped up in Isaiah’s vow. He presented himself, purged, en nobled, to the Lord his Saviour. A living sacrifice—it was that which he laid at the feet of God. And my whole history should be proof that I am separated unto the gospel and kingdom of Christ. My body and my spirit, my time and my tastes, my pleasures and my pursuits are His. There was an unconditional ministry in front of Isaiah’s vow. “Send me,” he said. He could not sit still any longer. For years he toiled untiringly. There is work opening out to me on every hand, work summoning me hour after hour. It is treason to refrain from glorifying my Master . . . Having gone in—to the heart of the Father, to the salvation of the Son, to the grace of the Holy Ghost— let me go out, too.— Alexander Smellie. A knowledge of things divine, spiritual, and eternal is not arrived at by research or reason, but by the apprehension of faith. And faith is a source of power. Not only does it apprehend the unseen, but it enters into vital union with it, and so wields, according to its strength, the' powers of the world to come. And it is a principle of action. This follows in evitably from what precedes. When one by faith obtains knowledge and is made conscious of power, he cannot but act. If the Christian really believes the things he says he believes, if he feels the inspira tion of this knowledge and the stirring of this power within him, he cannot stand July 6— “Then said I, Here am I; send me (Isa. 6:8). July 7— “He . . . was strong in faith, giving glory to God” (Rom. 4:20).
idle. Men of faith have always been men of action. Faith, then, in its essence, is the power by which we grasp the future and the unseen, the infinite and the eternal; and in its application, it is a means of knowledge, a source of power, and a principle of action. — W. Graham Scroggie. —o— July 8— “When he, the Spirit of truth, ts come, he will guide you into all truth” (John 16:13). Spirit of God, descend upon my heart; Wean •it from earth; through all its pulses move; Stoop to my weakness, mighty as Thou art, And make me love Thee as I ought to love. I ask no dream, no prophet ecstasies; No sudden rending of the veil of clay; No angel visitant, no opening skies; But take the dimness of my soul away. Teach me to feel that Thou art always nigh; Teach me the struggles of the soul to bear; To check the rising doubt, the rebel sigh; Teach me the patience of unanswered prayer. Teach me to love Thee as Thine angels love, One holy passion filling all my frame; The bapt’sm of the heaven-descended Dove, My heart an altar, and Thy love the flame. —George Croly. —o— Are you willing to pay the price to be a prince ? Are you willing to come to an end of yourself? Are you willing to let the blessed Lord come into your life, that His love may be shed abroad in your heart, transforming you, renewing your mind, that you may know what is the per fect will of God ? Do you want to know it? He is waiting to bless you, to show you His love, that love that persists. He waits that He may unveil it to you. Are you willing to pay the price to receive it? — Selected. —o— July 10— “We have the mind o f Christ" (1 Cor. 2:16). A Christian is one who has the mind of Christ in a twofold fashion. He has ac cepted and enthroned the mind of Christ as the standard of conduct—the mind of Christ as declared in His Word and in His life, as these are recorded in the gos pels. The mind of Christ is the straight edge by which he tests the horizontal of his life, and the plumb-line by which he judges its perpendicular. Further, he has received the mind of Christ, that is, the Spirit^ of Christ, as an enlightening, re straining, constraining, rebuking, guiding, empowering, creating energy. And the loyal application to life of the standard unfailingly assures the putting forth of the energy in life.-!-/. Stuart Holden. — O — July 11— “These things write we unto you, that your joy may be full . . . My July 9— “A s a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast pre vailed" (Gen. 32:28).
