ENJOYING THE BEAUTY OF OUR WORLD
TAKING TIME TO VISIT FAMILY
My family recently enjoyed a trip to the Dominican Republic to visit my wife’s family. We flew into Puerto Plata and enjoyed a few nights in the small beach town of Cabarete. We shared a condo on the water with a few relatives and ate fresh seafood at the many beachside restaurants. Cabarete is known for kitesurfing, and there were about 100 kitesurfers there each afternoon. They were really impressive! Maybe next time I’ll get the courage to take a lesson, but on this trip, I just enjoyed running along the beach and playing with my family in the water. After Cabarete, we ventured into the middle of the country to visit my mother-in-law’s family farm. I always love walking along the beautifully landscaped property and drinking fresh limeade. Our relatives there loved seeing my daughter, Talia, again and meeting my son, James, for the first time. We spent one night near the farm, and then visited my wife’s grandparents in a small village called Pimentel before making our way down to Santo Domingo, where my father-in-law lives.
We spent a week in Santo Domingo visiting family and taking the kids to the zoo and aquarium. We also walked along the Colonial District and purchased dulce de leche to take back to friends and coworkers in the United States. Our last destination was Punta Cana. We stayed at a resort with relatives and enjoyed plentiful food, a waterpark, sailing, swimming, and running along the shore. The sand is white and soft — and the water is almost as warm as the air. It’s really a paradise worth visiting. We were sad to say goodbye to loved ones but are grateful for the opportunity to visit our family and explore my wife’s beautiful homeland. It was a truly incredible experience.

A CAT COAUTHORED AN INFLUENTIAL PHYSICS PAPER THE TRUE STORY OF F.D.C. WILLARD
Cats defy the laws of physics all the time, so it’s only fitting a cat would teach us physics more directly — by coauthoring a highly cited, influential physics paper. In 1975, Jack H. Hetherington was a professor of physics at Michigan State University, and he completed a paper on atomic behavior. However, he had a problem: As a sole author, Hetherington had used “we” throughout the paper. A colleague pointed out that publishers reserved that language for papers with multiple authors. With today’s software, this would be a minor inconvenience. But to fix his error in 1975, Hetherington would have to retype the entire paper manually on his typewriter. Time was short, and Hetherington had done all the work himself. According to Hetherington’s 1982 book, “More Random Walks in Science,” he explained, “After an evening’s thought, I simply asked the secretary to change the title page to include the name of the family cat.” And that’s what happened; the professor named his Siamese cat, Chester, as his coauthor.
for Felis Domesticus Chester . The last name, Willard, was the name of Chester’s father.
The professor didn’t feel too guilty for trying to deceive the publisher: “Why would I do such an irreverent thing? … If it eventually proved to be correct, people would remember the paper more if the anomalous authorship were known. In any case, I went ahead and did it and have generally not been sorry.”
The journal loved the paper, but the ruse stayed secret among his close colleagues until a visitor arrived to meet the authors. When Hetherington told them the truth, they laughed, and not long after that, the feline coauthor became quite famous. F.D.C. Willard not only saved Hetherington from rewriting the entire paper, but also continues to inspire cat-related academia antics. On April 1, 2014, the American Physical Society (APS) announced all cat-authored papers would be made freely available. “Not since Schrödinger has there been an opportunity like this for cats in physics,” they wrote. We couldn’t agree more.
Of course, the name Chester wouldn’t look convincing as a scientific paper coauthor. So, he invented “F.D.C. Willard.” The initials stand
ALLOW US TO ASSIST YOU! Stressing Over a Traffic Bench Warrant?
HOW DO YOU CLEAR A BENCH WARRANT?
Many drivers do not understand the consequences of ignoring a traffic ticket. A traffic ticket doesn’t go away — if you fail to appear in court and do not resolve your traffic ticket, it’s a misdemeanor offense. But a seasoned traffic attorney can assist you and help you through the process. Here is what you need to know about bench warrants and how to clear them. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A BENCH WARRANT? Bench warrants are used to arrest and detain an individual who failed to appear in court, or disobeyed a court order. A judge can also issue a bench warrant if you failed to show proof of enrollment, progress, or completion of a court-ordered program. Once a bench warrant is issued, you are at risk of being arrested and detained through any police contact. In addition, the court is authorized to add a “civil assessment” for up to $300. However, an attorney can normally persuade a judge to lift the “civil assessment” if there is a “just cause” why you missed court. Typically, when a bench warrant is issued, a hold will be placed on your license and the DMV will suspend your license if you do not clear up the hold within a short period of time (usually about a month). Call us right away if you missed a court date so we can help you avoid a suspension of your license!
Once you’re aware a warrant is out for your arrest, it’s best if you voluntarily appear in court. However, if you decide to go this route, the judge has the option to place you in custody
since the warrant is still in effect, but that would only happen if you were charged with a serious offense. It’s important to hire an experienced attorney to assist you during this process. If you receive a traffic citation and failed to appear in court, you may be at risk of having a bench warrant issued. But don’t panic — Bigger & Harman is here to help! We can attend your court hearing for you and persuade the judge to recall the bench warrant. Your lifestyle depends on staying on the road and continuing to drive. So, allow us to assist you so you can continue to do what you love without the stress.

IT’S VERY EASY TO FIND A VIOLATION The Top 5 Equipment/Vehicle Citations No matter how hard you try for perfection, inspectors or law enforcement officers can easily find an equipment violation while you’re trucking. They can pull over any truck and find a violation almost every time because bolts and other items can jiggle, loosen, or break when working with massive equipment in a strenuous environment. The Vehicle Maintenance BASIC is one of the most difficult areas for truckers to improve because it is so easy to find violations — especially for flatbed truck drivers. Here are the top five vehicle maintenance violations in roadside inspections. 1. Inoperative required lamps: These lamps include headlamps, tail lamps, and turn signals. 2. Defective lighting: Watch out for missing or faulty lighting such as reflective striping or rotation beacons on oversized loads. 3. Tire tread: If your treading is less than 2/32 of an inch, you risk receiving a violation. 4. Oil or grease leak: If a leak worsens, it can cause the engine to seize — leading to larger, more expensive repairs. 5. Missing or broken fire extinguishers or warning triangles: Although it’s up to the carrier to ensure these items are on the truck before assigning them, it’s the driver’s responsibility to have all the proper equipment. WHAT DO YOU DO IF YOU RECEIVE AN EQUIPMENT VIOLATION? You should always challenge an equipment violation — especially when you get an out-of-service (OOS) order. Some inspectors aren’t fully aware of what constitutes an OOS order. If the violation isn’t in the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) handbook, it doesn’t meet the OOS criteria. Many truckers are unaware they can challenge these citations in court, so most truckers end up with false accusations on their Pre- Employment Screening Program (PSP) records. However, if you contest the violation and win, nothing should show up on your PSP record and BASICS file. If you find yourself with an equipment violation, challenge the citation with the help of your friends at Bigger & Harman! Give us a call today so we can help you stay on the road and do what you love.

4 TIPS FOR PRACTICING MINDFULNESS EMBRACING THE POWER OF NOW
SLOW DOWN. Try savoring the process of a task, even if it isn’t your favorite thing to do. Paying deliberate attention to your daily actions and activities, like doing the dishes or even folding laundry, promotes healthy focus and reduces feelings of being overwhelmed. GET MOVING. Incorporating exercise and movement into your daily routine helps you to become aware of your body’s sensations. You’ll be more
Have you ever sat down to eat a bowl of ice cream, then looked down a minute or two later to notice you only have one bite left? What about reaching your destination in the car and not recalling one thing about the entire trip? With the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, it’s tough to be present 100% of the time, but we shouldn’t let our minds go on autopilot. Not only can this be a safety hazard, but it may also impact important relationships and reduce our enjoyment and satisfaction.
With busy schedules and long to-do lists, how can we be more mindful? Here are four tips to help you embrace the power of now! USE THE POWER OF MEDITATION. You don’t need to meditate for a long time, and it certainly doesn’t require special poses or guidance. But taking just five minutes out of your day to focus on your breathing and clear your mind counts as meditation. It can help you to be more aware, present, and productive, especially in times of stress.
appreciative of how your body responds to different stimuli and movements, and this trains you to be more aware of yourself. PRACTICE MINDFUL EATING. Do you always eat in front of the television or computer? Try eating without distractions, dine in good company, or pay closer attention to flavors and textures of the meal — it’s good for both your body and soul!
