Rim & Spur Sprocket Troubleshooting Guide

Spur Sprocket Damage

Rim Damage

Severe Rim Damage

Cause This condition can occur when cutting chain drive links wear through the case-hardened teeth Result Cutting chain can be ruined by damaged spurs Solution If spur sprocket teeth look like this replace im- mediately

Cause Wear can occur under normal conditions. How- ever, check for excessive rim wear and look for wear on outer diameter Result The reduction in diameter can also allow chain drive links to damage the sprocket adapter Solution Replace rim after two chains

Solution Do not fit cutting chain to rims that are severely worn. Serious chain damage will result and the rim may break

Worn Spur

Outer Wear

Broken Rim

Chain Brake Stress

Skirt Wear/Brake Band

Wear/Adapter Damage

Worn Rim and Adapter Spline

Result An overly tightened strap around the drum will cause the strap to rub against the clutch drum which will overheat and soften the metal causing potential drum failure Solution If your chainsaw has a chain brake, always check the brake to make sure it stops the rotating chain when activated. Make certain that the brake strap around the drum is not too tight
