Kara Kalkbrenner Phoenix (AZ) Fire Chief Kara Kalkbrenner is a strong leader and a high-achiever. It's like Women's History Month and International Woman's Day, as they relate to fi re service leaders, were created with her in mind. Kara has been a Phoenix fi re fi ghter since 1985 and has served as Fire Chief of the nation’s fi fth largest city since 2014. It’s as if Women’s History Month and International Woman’s Day, as they relate to fire service leaders, were created with her in mind. Kara has been a Phoenix firefighter since 1985 and has served as fire chief of the nation’s fifth largest city since 2014. Kara is one of only a handful of women fire chiefs of large metropolitan fire departments in the country. Interestingly, Chief Mary Cameli is another. It’s heartening to see two such exceptional women fire chiefs in the same metropolitan area who are not only colleagues, but friends as well. When Kara was a sophomore at Maryvale High School in Phoenix (also mine and Sher's alma mater), she decided to pursue a career in the fi re service. She made that decision after a chance conversation with the parents of a Phoenix Fire fi ghter. And as they say...the rest is history.
