Army Navy Country Club June 2023 E-Newsletter

Secretary’s Message By Col D’Anne Spence, USAF, Ret.

The Army Navy Country Club Annual Meeting will be held on Monday, 2 October 2023 at the Arlington Clubhouse. At the meeting, we will elect Resident Members to the Board of Governors to serve for the period October 2023 to October 2026. Our By-Laws provide that only Resident Members may stand for election to the Board. At this year’s Annual Meeting, we are presently scheduled to elect 17 Governors. We will elect 7 Governors from those Resident Members who are on Active Duty or Selected Reserve Resident status. We will elect 10 Governors from those Resident Members who are in the All Others status. We will ensure that nomination forms are available in the Administration Office and on the Club’s website no later than Thursday, 1 June 2023. To ensure the publication of the nomination in the Annual Meeting Packet, we must receive the nomination no later than Friday, 7 July 2023. We will permit nominations from the floor at the Annual Meeting, but please advise me of any such notifications prior to the meeting so I can ensure the floor nomination is of a qualified Resident Member. The use of military rank for nomination and election purposes is permissible under Title 10 of the US Code. For example, an Active Duty army officer may identify herself in the form of “CPT Jane Doe, USA,” and a retired army officer may identify herself as “CPT Jane Doe, USA (Ret.). Former military officers may not use their former rank as a preface, but may use their highest wartime rank as follows: Ms. Jane Doe (CPT, USA). I strongly encourage those who are interested in serving on the Board of Governors to familiarize themselves with our By-Laws, Club Rules, and Organization Manual. I am available to answer any questions you might have about this process at danne.emmett.spence@gmail.com or by phone: (703) 835-4108.

In spite of the immaturity of the golf course, the Club was confident enough of the playing conditions to host the Army Golf Championship in September 1929. Golf Dress Code Reminders

As the golf season gets into full swing here are some reminders regarding the dress code for Members and their guests: 1) ANCC is a “Soft Spike” Only facility. 2) All golfers at ANCC will dress in a manner that reflects the decorum and good taste of current or traditional golf attire when using any of the golf facilities. Clothing items such as denim jeans or denim skirts (any color), frayed or cut-off shorts, athletic or tennis shorts or skirts, spandex biking shorts, gym shorts, sweatsuits, warmup suits, tennis dresses, tee shirts, halter tops, and tank tops are examples of inappropriate golf attire. 3) For gentlemen, collared shirts will be tucked into trousers or shorts, and knitted or banded collars must be at least 1” wide. 4) Caps will be worn “bill forward” whenever it is appropriate to wear a hat. 5) For ladies, it is not a requirement for shirts to be tucked in, but bare midriffs should not be visible before, during, or after a swing. 6) Junior Golfers will observe the same attire and dress code policy as adults.

The Inter-Service Scramble Championship will be held on Saturday, 1 July at the Arlington course. The format is a four-person team scramble and will begin with an 8:30 AM shotgun start. WDCGA: Women’s District of Columbia Golf Association

It’s been a busy few weeks of golf for the Career Women’s Golf Organization with lots to look forward to! In May we held our Charity Best Ball Tournament to raise funds for breast cancer. Congratulations to our winners Beth Foster, Gwen Maurice, Sherrie Balko and Deena Holingsworth! We also held our rescheduled Memorial Stableford Tournament which was won by E.R. Anderson. CWGO: Career Women’s Golf Organization

The WDCGA is well underway with the 2023 season. Three teams have been competing during April and May in Match Play competition throughout the region. Representing Army Navy in Division I are Shelley Savage (Captain), Emily Abeling, Marie Anderson, Judi Enright, Maile Fries and Jill Van Tine. Huge Congratulations, Ladies, on a very impressive 1st place finish for Net points and a very close 2 nd place finish for Gross points. Division III is currently just two points behind the leader as they head into their last match of the season. Good luck to the team consisting of Pam Quinn (Captain), Margaret Ann Connors, Shara Fordyce, Tina Gwilliam, Amy Hawkins and Didi Summers. Congratulations to the Division V team consisting of Andi Carpenter (Captain), Laurie Bravo, Carol Mills and Susan Walthall for finishing 4 th in their Division. Many thanks to Danielle Hetzler, Jaehwa Kim, and Linda Nguyen for stepping in as substitutes when needed. It has been a fun, successful season and a treat to play other great courses in the area. On the Tournament front, the weather did not cooperate for the Ice Breaker at Argyle Country Club. The Houlahan Cup, however, was played at Mt Vernon Country Club with a crowded field of competitors from many clubs throughout the area. Congratulations to the following ANCC Members who finished “in the money”- Linda Nguyen and Tina Gwilliam were 1 st and 2 nd respectively in the 3 rd flight, Becky Harper finished 2 nd in the 6 th flight, and Mary Blair finished 1 st in the 7 th flight. Coming up on 13 June are the Cup Tournaments at the National Club at Tantallon, followed by the Bennett Pinehurst Tournament at International CC on 20 June. We continue to welcome all CWGO members to play on our Wednesday night play nights at Arlington, our Thursday night play nights at Fairfax and our Saturday play days (alternating between Arlington and Fairfax). These (and our happy hours on the patio afterwards) are all low stress environments in which to get to know CWGO members. For questions about membership please contact CWGO.membership@gmail.com . Greetings from your Junior Activities Committee (JAC). We are initiating a “challenge activity” which will entail an off-site adventure challenge for individual or family members. As our inaugural event, we invite all interested members to follow JAC leaders, Col. Art White USMC (Ret.) and Lt Col. Eric Schnabel USA (Ret.), in climbing “Old Rag”, a 3,284 ft mountain less than 2 hours from our Arlington campus. The trek, which can take anywhere between 4.5 and 7 hours offers a challenging climb, but rewards climbers with amazing vistas of ancient forests, rugged mountains and open skies. Col. White and Lt Col. Schnabel completed the expeditionary climb in spring of 2022 and challenge members to do the same! There is no fixed date or club support for the climb. Participants are encouraged to assemble family members or ANCC friends to join together in a group endeavor. Climbers are encouraged to take photos during the journey and upon reaching the summit and submit the photo, group name and climb time via the ANCC webpage Junior Activities “Challenge Activity” link. Climbers will be recognized in a photo display and with a certificate! ANCC JUNIOR ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE SHENANDOAH CHALLENGE
