Planting The Seeds: Welch Packaging Celebrates 40 Years BY GREG KISHBAUGH If you want to learn the secret of what drives a box plant’s success, walk the production floor with the owner. No P&L or corporate state- ment can reveal more. When most business owners tell you their employees are like ‘fam- ily’, it’s wise to tread carefully. But for Scott Welch, President of Welch Packaging, Elkhart, Indiana, actions speak louder than words.

American Box Co. Acquires Covenant Packaging Shawnee, Kansas based American Box Com- pany (ABC) announced that it has officially ac- quired Covenant Packaging, a leader in corru- gated solutions for over 26 years. ABC said that it has long admired the leg- acy that Drew and Diane Freeman have built and that their commitment to quality, service, and people aligns perfectly with its values, making a new era of growth, innovation and honoring the best of both teams. “It has been a privilege to collaborate with Drew and Diane over the years. Together, we look forward to strengthening relationships with some of the region’s most respected manufacturers and continuing the high levels of service and quality they have come to ex- pect,” said Garrett Bradley, President of ABC. Drew Freeman, Vice President of Cove- nant Packaging, said the team at ABC embod- ies its commitment to customer service and core values. “Our confidence in the American team is unwavering; they have consistently proven to be a reliable partner, dedicated to both their own success and the success of our custom- ers. Together, we look forward to achieving great things,” Freeman said.

On a walk-through of his company’s production floor, Welch does not need to greet anyone: they all come up to him. Scott Welch (center), President of Welch Packaging, has been happy to wel- come family members to the company including son Brock (left) and son-in- law Joe Stiglitz.

In a 450,000-square-foot facility that holds 320 employees, Welch knows every associate’s name, as well as the names of their spouses and children, and just as importantly, about their lives outside the plant, their interests, recent trips they’ve taken. And he tells every employee he sees that he’s grateful for their hard work.

The idea of family is both figurative and literal. On the floor are a mother and son, a wife and husband, a father and two of his children. All working together, often side by side. CONTINUED ON PAGE 24 Lindsay Welch

Turn Trim Waste into Revenue

One Size Never Fits All G.F. Puhl Designs Scrap Systems to Meet YOUR Needs Our customers have various needs for scrap and dust collection systems based on several factors including building layout, available space for the equipment, distance conveyed, local codes for noise and height as well as air permitting and available operating and maintenance staff. Change the game with a custom-designed system by G.F. Puhl. It can make all the difference. When it comes to trim collection systems, there’s virtually no problem we haven’t solved. Problem: No space for a baler room. No budget for baler room staff. Solution: Try outdoor auger compactors requiring minimal operator interaction. Auger compactors achieve higher compaction than conventional ram compactors with less maintenance and no hydraulic fluid. Dual compactor systems allow continuous running while the waste Solution: Request a custom system with remanufactured equipment. G.F. Puhl sells remanufactured balers, blowers, separators, filters, and more. The savings can be significant and the warranty adds peace of mind. Problem: No room for a scrap system inside the building. Solution: If your building footprint won’t support additional trim waste equipment, go outdoors. Exterior systems like an above-roof or ground-level concentrator will boost your capacity. Problem: Your existing system doesn’t meet codes and the inspector has notified you of a problem with the existing system. Solution: G.F. Puhl’s NFPA trained engineering team designs NFPA and OSHA compliant systems that are as safe as they are durable. Problem: Dust is out of control. Solution: G.F. Puhl systems are designed to minimize the hazards created by ambient dust. Dust briquetters, certified explosion isolation valves, flame front diverters, and other safety features maximize safety. Problem: No way to monitor the system unless you’re on site. Solution: G.F. Puhl leads the pack with proprietary technology that makes it possible to monitor the system from wherever you are. AF&PA Welcomes Corrugated Packaging Alliance, Talks Tariffs AF&PA welcomed its friends and partners from the Corru- gated Packaging Alliance to its new office to discuss issue priorities for our industry. Top of mind were the “recipro- cal” tariffs that President Trump and his administration an- nounced on about 90 different countries. Key countries that received reciprocal tariffs on their imports include: China, 34 percent on top of previously announced 20 percent tariffs; Indonesia, 30 percent; Swit- zerland, 30 percent; India, 27 percent; South Korea, 25 percent; Japan, 24 percent; Malaysia, 24 percent; Europe- an Union, 20 percent; and Brazil, 10 percent. Notably, Canada and Mexico did not receive additional duties on the already-in-place IEEPA tariffs of 25 percent for most imports from these countries. The USMCA ex- emption for Canada and Mexico remains in effect. “The stakes for manufacturers could not be higher,” said NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons. “Many man- ufacturers in the United States already operate with thin margins. The high costs of new tariffs threaten investment, jobs, supply chains and, in turn, America’s ability to out- compete other nations and lead as the preeminent manu- facturing superpower. Manufacturers build things in Ameri- ca to sell around the world—and manufacturers in America share President Trump’s goal of supporting manufacturing

investment, growth, and expansion. The president has the opportunity to achieve this vital goal while also minimizing disruptions and cost increases across our industry.” Timmons said the administration should minimize tariff costs for manufacturers that are investing and expanding in the US; ensure tariff-free access to critical inputs that manufacturers use to make things in America; and secure better terms for manufacturers by negotiating “zero-for-ze- ro” tariffs for American-made products in our trading part- ners’ markets. “That means they don’t charge us, and we don’t charge them,” he said. This situation will continue to be extremely fluid, the AF&PA said. A number of nations have already signaled they are ready to talk to this Admin- istration about various trade deals and negotiations. From left, Michael D’Angelo, AICC; Bob McIlvaine, FBA; Cory Martin, FBA; Larry Montague, TAPPI; Rachel Kenyon, FBA; Lawton Roberts, TAPPI; Shoshana Micon, AF&PA; and Heidi Brock, AF&PA.

Do you need printed sheets? We have your answer.. Introducing Heartland’s ColorCorr. This is “flexo-printing in the round”. On our corrugator we can print up to 109” wide. The advantage is that we can print the equivalent of ½ roll at a time and not be required to keep several rolls of very expensive preprinted paper on the floor. Much less waste and risk. In continual print mode, we use either laser-engraved rubber rolls or solid rubber rolls to print a “flood coat” or a repeating pattern. If we are printing a repeating pattern, we can run a two-color design on the paper. Customers have found that running sheets we print can allow them to run a lighter-grade due to reduced caliper loss, and in some cases eliminate one or more machine passes.

sets us apart. Our new Allpro 110 machine is providing us with new capabilities and automated production for our broad range of folding carton styles. This investment will significantly contribute to our sales growth in the packag- ing segment.” Known as one of the most versatile folder gluers in the world, the Allpro 110 is touted to exceed production requirements, maximize productivity and profitability, and produce endless carton box design and format possibil- ities. These include straight line, double wall, crash lock and optional four- and six-corner with single finger servo fold for high-speed precision as well as inner partition, Z-fold, conical crash lock and CD boxes. A key feature of the Allpro 110, says Theoret, is its fully automatic processes, and job memory functions to achieve the shortest possible makeready times. Battlefield said this offers the ability to save its progress for repeat orders or similar sized orders and has helped improve its overall production and set-up times. An intuitive, touch- screen-based operating system provides for ease of op- eration. Due to the Allpro’s larger format, Battlefield said it has lots of capacity for all its jobs. “It has been an honor to partner with Battlefield and watch their significant growth,” says Aleks Lajtman, Koenig & Bauer’s sales manager for Canada. He holds a degree in mechanical engineering from United States Military Academy in West Point, New York, and an MBA from Webster University. The second general session will feature the end-use series with insights into the important produce segment, a panel discussion focused on strategies to improve safety in manufacturing environments, and a customer presen- tation. The event takes place after AICC Spring Meeting in Bo- nita Springs, Florida, and allows attendees of both events to travel once and enjoy a weekend in the sun between events. Known for its stable quality, stiffness, and light weight, MetsäBoard Classic FBB is a leading choice for fast moving goods, such as food and healthcare packaging. Thanks to modernization of the Simpele folding boxboard mill, it will now deliver further improved print quality that extends the end use area of the grade to more demanding print jobs. “By combining curtain coating and blade coating, the newest version of MetsäBoard Classic FBB delivers more visual uniformity and brighter and more vivid images, which we believe is going to help our customers’ prod- ucts truly stand out on store and pharmacy shelves,” says Maarten Florizoone, VP of Growth, Folding Boxboard. Energy consumed at Simpele mill to produce MetsäBoard Classic FBB has already been 89 percent fos- sil-free, and that number is estimated to reach 98 percent by the end of 2025. “The board is a big part of our custom- ers’ products, so if we don’t push ourselves forward in our fossil CO2targets, our customers will have a hard time de- creasing their Scope 3 CO2 emissions and meeting their sustainability targets,” Florizoone says. “Work has already begun at the Simpele the mill site and the construction phase is ongoing. The improved product will be available to customers in October 2025.

Welch takes obvious joy in seeing each of them, in shar- ing a quick production update or simply a laugh and a hug. And each of them, to a person, is happy to see Welch. From The Beginning After graduating from DePauw University, Scott Welch’s first job in the box business was with Northern Packaging in the sales department. But when the owner unexpect- edly passed away, Welch found himself working in every corner of the plant, with no prior training. “At the time I kept thinking that this was not what I signed up for, but in retro- spect it was great training for the future. I ran a flexo folder gluer, a die cutter and was even moved into design for a while. Those early lessons correlate directly into every associate that we hire now. Everyone starts in production. It doesn’t matter what your pedigree is.”

After a stint at Performance Packaging, Welch felt in or- der to move forward in the manner he wanted, he needed more control over his destiny. He’d learned early lessons in the industry, one of which was to be a guiding principle: he felt like the companies didn’t care enough about their customers, their workers or about searching for ways to grow the company. Welch formed Elkhart Container in 1985 with a silent partner, Don Kindt. The original team was comprised of just four associates, including Scott’s wife Kim, Roger Wartsler, Cliff Wilson and Darlyn Smale. Later that year, Dave Miller, Jeff Pawlak and Darnell Jett joined the fledgling company. Of these eight original associates (including Scott), five remain with the business to this day. Roger, Cliff—both now deceased—and Darlyn retired from Welch. “We had eight people that worked for us in 1985,” Welch reiterated. “Today, five of them still work together. It’s amazing and the root of our business. You know each other’s rhythm in a way that is only possible through expe- rience. We finish each other’s sentences.” From the day the doors were opened, Scott and Elkhart Container were in the manufacturing business, utilizing Scott Welch: “Everyone here should feel secure. When they are sick. When they’ve had an accident. We want them to know we are looking after them.”

printer-slotter, slitter, and taper-gluer machines to meet customer demand. “The focus has always remained the same: to make a difference for our customers and to make a difference in our associates’ lives.” Three years after launching the company, Welch bought out his silent partner and focused his attention on expansion, founding Innovative Packaging in Huntington, Indiana. In 1992, the company’s growth led to Elkhart Container moving to larger facilities and the next year, Pulp Products became the first of many acquisitions. Welch’s stance on acquisition is based on the idea of assimilation, rather than displacement. He feels there is a

great responsibility in buying a company to keep the as- sociates and the community that cares for them well rep- resented. “Something we feel gives an independent company an advantage over an integrated is that we don’t displace anybody,” he said. “We want all the current employees to stay on board. We don’t move the headquarters, and we want to give back to the local communities. And those needs vary greatly depending on location. Customers and employees in Elkhart do not necessarily have the same concerns as those in Lexington, Tennessee or Glasgow, Kentucky. “We’ve been blessed by people that assimilate and work hard to fit into the culture of our company. Because we believe to be successful, you’ve got to have people that are from the area, connected to the community. It seems foolish to acquire a company that employs sharp, well-educated, hard-working people and then displace them.” Welch takes an organic approach to acquisitions. The move needs to be the right fit for the general health of the company, its mission, and most importantly, for the em- ployees who are affected. Welch Packaging spans 26 business units and employs near- ly 2,000 associates. It serves nearly 6,000 customers across seven states.
