“The dynamic here is very powerful” he said. “It’s pow- erful, it’s fun and it’s genuine. We are all about service and all about understanding our customers. It’s all about on-time delivery. We call it the ‘ultimate corrugated expe- rience.’” Welch’s business formula is undeniable. Today, Welch Packaging spans 26 business units and employs nearly 2,000 associates. It serves nearly 6,000 customers across seven states. A standing rule at the company is that Welch always wants to stay informed about his company’s asso- ciates. Does someone have health issues? A death in the family? Welch wants to receive a text about it. Immediately. “Everyone here should feel secure. When they are sick. When they’ve had an accident. We want them to know we are looking after them. They last thing they need to worry about what is happening back here. I have a list on my desk of all the people in the company that are being paid but are not working. They need to know that we are taking care of them.” Welch operates a Make a Difference Fund, a 501(C)3 for its associates. If an associate faces a hardship—a house fire or medical emergency—they can get a grant. The fund committee is led by 39-year associate, Dave Miller, who has never missed a day of work in his career at Welch. “One of the ways we can live our values is to help people through a tough time,” commented Miller. Additionally, the company offers no-interest loans to its employees for other issues, such as car repairs. It currently has an estimated half a million dollars outstanding in loans to employees. Darnell Jett, another one of the “original five” associates who is still with the company, stated “We have always been treated like family. Welch kept families working and kept companies alive.” The company’s largesse extends beyond the walls of its facility. From individual acts of kindness to organized volunteer collaborations, Welch Packaging has supported organizations such as Toys for Tots, Habitat for Humani- ty, Boys and Girls Clubs, Humane Shelters, food kitchens, cultural organizations, academic institutions, civic groups, faith-based organizations, and many other endeavors. Jeff Pawlak, another of the “original five,” has served in various leadership roles in the local Boys and Girls Club. “Giving back to our communities is a responsibility we take very seriously. It’s part of who we are,” he said enthusiastically. “I believe that birds of a feather flock together,” Welch continued, “If people have shared values and work ethics and a cause they believe in, they are happy to come to work. It’s on us to make sure that’s the case. You cannot expand and grow without good people. It does you abso- lutely no good to have resources—machinery, technology, even money—if you do not have good and talented and motivated and appreciated people.” Treat people with respect. Make them feel valued. Let them know they will be safe and secure. Sometimes, in business as in life, the profound answer is the simplest.
