CAMPUSCOMMONS
HALLOWEEN ON CAMPUS WHO’S GOING TO WIN THIS YEAR’S COSTUME CONTEST? Halloween is a time for us to have a little fun at the office. Every year, our staff picks a theme, and we have a contest to see which of us can come up with the best costume. Any patient who comes into the office that day will submit a vote for the staff member they think is top dog, and at the end of the day, we tally up the results. A couple of years back, we chose the theme of famous people from the fitness industry. We had Hans and Franz ready to pump you up, Jane Fonda made an appearance, and one of our PT assistants came we had shaving cream. The kids all stayed in their age groups, so we sought out the high school kids and planned our attack on them. We jumped out of our perches, tagged them with a quick blast of Barbasol, and scurried off to hide. There weren’t the threats to safety we have now, so parents let us loose without fear. And as long as we were home on time at the end of the night, everything was great. It’s goofy to look back 35 years and see what we did compared to my children’s experience of Halloween today.
parents. She’ll head out with some friends, and we’ll take our other two kids. My mother-in-law comes to man the house while we tour the neighborhood for a couple of hours. All the kids come home around 9 p.m., dump their goodies out on the floor, and open up the free market of trades. It’s like watching economics unfold in its rawest form. this year. We know that our patients love dressing up too, and we’d like to extend an offer to you to wear your best costume. Who knows? Maybe we’ll even throw in a small prize. If you have your session scheduled for Halloween this year, join our quest to find a new winner for our friendly competition! Our office costume contest is something to behold, but we want to add more participants
prepared in a full-blown Richard Simmons get-up — Afro wig, spandex top, and even a few good impersonations to match. It was safe to say that he ended up winning. Last year, we decided to go with superheroes, and the same assistant won with a perfect rendition of Aquaman. This year, we are finalizing the theme, but you can bet we’re all gunning for first place. Growing up, Halloween was a little different than what many children are used to today. I’m from a small town of about 700 people, and there were only five streets in the city. Everyone knew each other, which allowed for some good wholesome fun. When we were in middle school, my friends and I walked the town similar to a scene from “Warriors” or “West Side Story” — only, instead of weapons,
My wife and I have three kids at different stages of life, so holidays always have an interesting dynamic — Halloween is a good example. There’s a nice pocket in our neighborhood where everyone can trick-or-treat, but our oldest is a sophomore in high school, so she’s starting to grow out of wanting to go with her TOWN SIMILAR TO A SCENE FROM ‘WARRIORS’ OR ‘WEST SIDE STORY’ —ONLY, INSTEAD OF WEAPONS, WE’D HAVE SHAVING CREAM.” “WHENWEWERE INMIDDLE SCHOOL, MY FRIENDS AND I WOULDWALK THE

COOKING OILS DECLASSIFIED
ARE YOU USING EXTRA-VIRGIN OLIVE OIL WRONG?
Not all cooking oils are created equal. Some cooking oils have distinct flavors, while others are suited for high temperatures. Every oil is unique. Here are six common oils and their best uses.
withstand temps up to about 460 degrees. In many cases, you can use it in place of other cooking oils — just be sure you’re using plain olive oil and not EVOO.
soybean, canola (rapeseed), and palm oils, making it the most inexpensive cooking oil.
PEANUT OIL
COCONUT OIL
Great for high-heat cooking, frying, and deep- frying, peanut oil has a neutral flavor, so you can easily use it in just about any dish that needs a cooking oil. It’s also a more heart- healthy option than canola and vegetable oils.
EXTRA-VIRGIN OLIVE OIL
Better for baking than cooking, coconut oil is generally solid at room temperature. It can be used for some cooking, but like EVOO it doesn’t play well with high temperatures. Keep it at 350 degrees or below and use it as a butter substitute.
An often misused oil, extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) should not be used for cooking or frying. It’s simply too delicate and cannot withstand high temperatures, which can damage the flavor, ruining dishes. Instead, use it as a finishing oil — drizzle it over pasta, salad, or bread.
AVOCADO OIL
When you need an oil to withstand high temps, this is your oil. It has a smoke point of 510 degrees, making it perfect for grilling and stir-frying. What makes avocado oil particularly unique is it can also be used as a finishing oil, like EVOO. It’s light yet resilient.
CANOLA OIL/VEGETABLE OIL
OLIVE OIL
A good option for high-heat cooking, baking, and frying, these utilitarian oils are completely neutral in flavor, but they’re not heart-healthy. Vegetable oil is a generic mix of oils, including
Unlike EVOO, standard olive oil can be used for cooking and frying. It can
2 HINDRANCES TOYOUR RECOVERY PLAN PHYSICAL THERAPY CONTINUES BEYOND OUR WALLS
While physical therapy happens in our clinic, recovery continues after a patient walks out the door. We strive to help people get back to peak physical condition, but the truth is that any progress at Campus Commons is for naught without your help. A good physical therapist will push you to new heights, but there are often ways all of that progress can be undone.
the mind, promote blood flow, and are within the confines of your limitation.
LIMITATIONS
If you broke your arm, odds are that you wouldn’t be out playing football the next day, right? Many patients see their injuries but don’t fully understand what their body is capable of. While not every trauma is as simple to understand as a broken bone, they all come with limitations. It’s important to understand what your body is capable of and how to give it proper recovery time. To find out more about how you can help your therapy after you leave the clinic, reach out to us. Healing starts in our clinic, but there are more hours in the day than just your session, and we want to help.
EMOTIONS
There’s nothing more frustrating than an injury, and it often leads to emotional distress. Burdens like these often lead to impatience and result in decisions that cause even more significant problems. When the emotions associated with injury weigh you down, it’s important to find activities that promote a healthy mental state. For some, this is the biggest challenge of all because the action that caused the injury is, in fact, stress-relieving for them, such as running, hiking, or sports. In these cases, it’s crucial to explore new ventures that can engage

being the most commonly occurring form of this condition, it’s imperative to maintain healthy levels of vitamin D in your diet. Milk, yogurt, and cheese are great foods to start with. For those with dairy allergies, try leafy greens or vegetables.
CITRUS
Oranges, grapefruits, lemons, and limes are foods with a high citrus content, which is proven to help fight inflammation. In addition, the nutrients of these fruits help maintain healthy joints. A healthy diet is a must for anyone, especially those recovering from injury. You can take the benefits of physical therapy home with you just by watching what you eat. Combined with the proper rehabilitation plan, healthy foods can get you back to full strength in no time.
FISH
Full of fatty acids and other inflammation-fighting agents, fish is great for reducing joint pain. Two servings a week is enough to make a difference. Salmon, mackerel, and other omega-3-rich fish are dense in protein and will also help with muscle recovery around the joints.

l l o COUNTY MEATH, IRELAND, WHERE HALLOWEEN BEGAN
Fans of Halloween don’t need to look far to find somewhere to celebrate their favorite holiday. There are festive parties all over the world, from New Orleans to London, but if you really want to embrace the spirit of Halloween, there’s no better destination than the birthplace of the holiday: County Meath, Ireland.
was celebrated with bonfires, offerings to fairies, and other rituals meant to keep evil spirits away. Many of these customs carried through the centuries and inspired Halloween traditions that are still practiced today. Today, Meath celebrates Oct. 31 with a blend of spooky thrills and traditional Samhain practices. The Spirits of Meath Halloween Festival starts with the lighting of the first torch fire of Samhain in Athboy, which kicks off a month of fun activities. If you like your Halloween extra spooky, the scream park, Farmaphobia, is waiting for you. And if you’re not a fan of screaming your head off, you can check out the Halloween-themed Spookling Afternoon Tea for fresh-baked treats and spirited conversation. The motto of this all-ages festival is “Fun by Day; Frights by Night,” meaning all the really scary ghosts wait until after sunset to come out. There are plenty of ways to celebrate Halloween, from carving jack-o’- lanterns and eating chocolate to running for your life through a haunted corn maze. And in County Meath, you can celebrate Halloween in every possible way. For more info, visit Discoverboynevalley.ie/whats-on/spirits- meath-halloween-festival-2018.
Every year in Boyne Valley, the residents of County Meath throw a month-long Halloween celebration. The Spirits of Meath Halloween Festival attracts thousands of guests from all over the world, and while this festival has only been celebrated since 2009, many of the traditions observed here date back to ancient times. The ancient Irish weren’t trick-or-treating or visiting haunted houses on Oct. 31, but they were celebrating the pagan holiday Samhain. Over 3,000 years ago, this Celtic festival was born in Meath and marked the end of the harvest. Samhain
