The Learning Never Stops How We Stay Ahead of the Curve With Continued Education

Every day, I remind myself that learning never stops. It’s something I’ve believed since I became a physical therapist, and it continues to shape my practice and approach to patient care. I bring this up because April 2 is actually Education and Sharing Day, a reminder of why continuous learning is such a pivotal element in my work and life. Back when I first graduated from PT school, continuing education was not required to maintain a license. That was mind-boggling to me . How could anyone think they had learned everything they needed to know in school? I wasn’t willing to settle for that, so I dove headfirst into continuing education courses. I signed up for a yearlong manual therapy course within my first year out of school, and I haven’t slowed down since. I

remember classmates asking me why I was going out of my way since it wasn’t required, but all I could think was, “Why wouldn’t I if it made me a better therapist?” Now, as a clinic owner, I prioritize ongoing education, not just for myself but for my entire team. I fund all continuing education courses for my physical therapists and make them absolutely mandatory. Every new skill we learn and every new technique we master directly benefits our patients. It’s not about meeting requirements. It’s about being the best we can be for the people who trust us with their health. Recently, I took my commitment to education to the next level by partnering with the Gray Institute. I’ve gone through their courses multiple times, including a 40-week fellowship program, and I make sure every new hire attends their Chain Reaction course. In fact, I’ve personally attended that same course seven times — each time with a new therapist from my team. You’d think after that many times, I wouldn’t have anything new to learn, but every single session has given me fresh insights, new ways to explain things to patients, or even just a different perspective on a movement pattern. This past year, I took things even further and got an entire membership for my clinic. Now, every physical therapist and tech in our practice can access hundreds of hours of movement science training. It’s become a core part of our clinic culture.

That mindset of constant learning has also led me to explore new technology for the clinic. A couple of years ago, I discovered StemWave, a shockwave therapy that has completely changed treatment options for our patients. It helps speed up healing, reduces chronic pain, and provides a real alternative to medications and surgeries. More recently, I came across Kinetisense, an AI-assisted 3D movement capture system that’s been a game-changer for posture correction, injury prevention, assessing Risk of Falls, and Functional Golf performance. We talk about posture a lot in the clinic, and with May being Correct Posture Month, it’s the perfect time to focus on it. The cool thing about Kinetisense is that it gives patients a real-time look at their posture and movement patterns. It’s one thing to tell someone they have poor posture — it’s another to show them a full 3D assessment that highlights exactly where their alignment is off and the top three dysfunctions in their upper and lower bodies. That’s why I push myself and my team to keep learning. The more tools we have in our toolbox, the better we can serve our patients. It’s not about being satisfied with what we already know. It’s about constantly seeking better ways to help people move, heal, and live without pain. And that’s a challenge I’ll gladly take on every single day. –Julian Manrique

ARE SUGAR SUBSTITUTES WORTH THE TRADEOFF? Know the Facts About Artificial Sweeteners

The U.S. market for soda is worth over $200 billion, fueled by the average American's annual consumption of nearly 40 gallons of soft drinks — including diet soda. While staying hydrated is good, sending lots of chemical sweeteners into our digestive tracts may not be. Concern for serious health issues started in the early 1970s when scientists linked cyclamate and saccharine, popular synthetic sweeteners, to cancer. Congress banned cyclamate but wouldn’t ban saccharine. More recent studies determined that obesity is related to many types of cancer, and obese people are more likely to consume lots of diet soda. Similarly, high blood pressure, diabetes, and strokes are more likely due to underlying health issues

like excessive weight than consuming artificial sweeteners.

In the last decade, more natural sugar alternatives have become available, like stevia, agave, monk fruit, and allulose. Diet soda manufacturers have yet to incorporate these into their soft drinks, but they are experimenting. The Coca-Cola Company uses stevia along with erythritol (another new sugar substitute) in its Vitamin Water Zero. Artificial sweeteners do provide some benefits, including fewer cavities, lower blood sugar, and less weight gain. However, some people still suffer side effects from drinking diet soda. The sugar alcohols in diet sodas are linked to intestinal distress, and one scientist points to a potential link

between laboratory-created sweeteners and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The importance of our stomach’s microbiome is new to science, and all impacts are under intense scrutiny. Sugar-free beverages may be a better choice than sugar-infused drinks because they don’t cause insulin spikes, but the Mayo Clinic warns that frequent consumption of any type of sweetened drink can become habit- forming, making it hard to return to drinking plain water, which is the optimal choice for health. As with most food trends, we should be informed, listen to our bodies, and make wise choices about what we drink and eat.

WHAT OUR PATIENTS ARE SAYING ...

The biggest compliment you can give us is referring friends and family. Thank you for all of your referrals and keep them coming! We love our clients!

“I experienced spinal stenosis in the neck and upper back. I had a balance problem as well, which required strengthening my legs, hips, and overall core body. Focus staff listened intently weekly to my issues and set up a routine of exercises, for which after over 7 months, the exercises are a part of my day-to-day activity. As for my neck and back, I have been in a great program again to strengthen them. Fusion rods were an adjustment, and Julian and his team were focus-driven and provided the correct therapy for that given day/week. I am today feeling 100% improved in my

surgery areas, and the quality of life is now exceptional. I would highly recommend Focus and Julian’s staff for the positive approach and exceptional knowledge in physical therapy.” –Alan R.

"When I first came to physical therapy at Focus, I had pain in my right shoulder (frozen shoulder). Julian, Junoe, and the professional team did a great job of treating my shoulder. With the exercises that I did during my treatment, I am now able to move my right shoulder with little limitation. I’m satisfied with the results of my treatment. Well done to the therapist team and also the front desk ladies for their professionalism!” –Andy M.

Pickleball Isn’t as Easy as It Looks

How to Stay Injury-Free on the Court This Spring

With spring in full bloom, it's no surprise that pickleball courts are packed. However, while many assume it’s an “easy” sport, jumping straight from the couch to the court can lead to unexpected injuries. Whether you're a seasoned player or new to the game, understanding the risks and preparing your body can help you stay injury-free and enjoy the sport for years to come. PICKLEBALL HAS PLENTY OF PHYSICAL DEMANDS. Pickleball may seem low-impact due to its small court size and slower pace compared to tennis but don’t be fooled. The sport requires quick lateral movements, rapid direction changes, and sudden stops — actions that can catch an unconditioned body off guard. Many players underestimate the physical demands, which can lead to injuries like ankle sprains, ruptured Achilles tendons, torn meniscus, wrist fractures, and even collarbone breaks .

WARMING UP IS A GAME-CHANGER. Injury prevention starts before you even pick up your paddle. Proper warm-ups increase your body temperature, improve flexibility, and prepare your muscles to get moving. Start with light cardio, like brisk walking or jogging, to get your blood flowing. Follow up with dynamic stretches, focusing on key muscle groups:

the lateral support required for quick side-to-side movements. Instead, invest in court-specific shoes designed to handle pickleball’s dynamic shifts. They provide better grip and stability and reduce the likelihood of ankle injuries.

STAY ACTIVE OFF THE COURT. To avoid injury and improve your

performance, aim for at least 150 minutes of regular exercise each week outside of pickleball. Activities like walking, swimming, or biking can enhance your endurance and keep your body conditioned. If you’re feeling aches or pains after a match, don’t wait for them to get worse. Contact our team to address any discomfort and get you back on the court stronger and healthier than ever!

Slide and Repeat: Take turns sliding down the hill. To keep the fun going, reapply soapy water and replace sliding suits (i.e., trash bags). WHY IT’S WORTH TRYING Trash-bagging is a unique way to enjoy quality family time. It’s incredibly budget- friendly — requiring only a few everyday items — and offers a creative alternative to expensive outings. This activity appeals to all ages, so you can get everyone involved and moving outdoors. Plus, trash-bagging is an excellent way to unplug from screens and reconnect. It reminds us that the best memories don’t require a Wi-Fi connection — just a little creativity and willingness to try something new.

Looking for a fun, wholesome way to bring the family together? “Trash-bagging” is a quirky, budget-friendly activity for adults and kids alike. Combining trash bags, rain, soap, and grassy hills, this outdoor pursuit, which became popular on social media, is a great way to embrace simple fun while creating lasting memories. HOW IT WORKS Don’t let a little rain keep you from having a good time. Getting set up for trash-bagging takes only a few steps:

Add the Soap: Using a squirt bottle, spray some soapy water onto the outside of the trash bag to create a slippery surface. Always use biodegradable soap safe for the grass and wildlife to protect the environment. Pick Your Hill: Choose a grassy hill free of rocks, sticks, and other debris. A gentle incline works best for safe and smooth sliding. Let the Rain Do the Work: Trash-bagging is the perfect rainy day activity, as the rain naturally lubricates the hill and adds to the fun. If there is no rain, you can use a hose to create the same effect.

Gear Up: Grab large plastic trash bags — at least one for each participant — and poke
