Get to the Root of Your Health Issues WELCOME TO HEALTH CARE THAT CARES

MAY 2025
Six to eight minutes — that’s the average amount of time you actually spend with your physician in a traditional health care setting. In that short window, you might get a prescription, a referral, or a reassurance your lab results are “within range.” But real healing takes more than a quick check- in and a one-size-fits-all solution. Long-term wellness requires time to know an individual’s needs, uncover the root causes of illnesses and pain, and provide holistic, non-surgical options that make a difference. I’ve been a chiropractor for 27 years, and after helping a patient with their low back or neck pain, I often felt I was sending them on a never-ending loop of different appointments once they left my office for other health conditions. I felt helpless there wasn’t more I could do for their overall health needs. Often, they would see their primary care physician who would prescribe them meds and/or send them to a series of specialists. The journey ended in one of two scenarios: the patient was on medications they didn’t really want to be on, or they had a surgery. Many knee, hip, and shoulder surgeries didn’t end well and adversely altered the patient’s life. The opportunity came two years ago when the Michigan House and Senate passed a bipartisan bill allowing chiropractors to own medical clinics. This change opened the doors for a new health care model in the state that integrated chiropractic care, physical therapy, and medical treatments under one roof. With that vision in mind, we launched Foundations Health and Physical Medicine, not just as a clinic but as a solution to the gaps in corporate health care. By combining the expertise of caring professionals in different facets of health, we create personalized treatment plans for patients that focus on real healing without the bureaucracy of big medicine standing in the way. Our goal was to create a truly patient-centered approach to provide well- rounded, non-drug, non-surgical care. Finding the right team in a rural area wasn’t easy but we ran into some good fortune. After a long search, in the fall of 2023 we found a great PT in Jodi Wadge, who brought a wealth of experience from corporate health, nursing home, and private practice care. Things really fell into place when a chiropractic patient — Gloria Peterson — walked into our office. A physician assistant with over a decade in corporate

health care and burnt out on the system, she was tired of the revolving door of quick appointments and prescription-based care. We talked, and she was clearly the missing provider in our team’s puzzle. Gloria brought a passion and expertise in functional medicine, digging into the root causes of peoples’ pain and discomfort rather than just masking the symptoms. With her came a large following of primary care patients who were also sick and tired of the corporate health care model. Our approach focuses on comprehensive functional and physical medicine. Patients have a whole team in one place who will work with them not just to fix the problem they are dealing with now but also to set them on a course to be healthier human beings overall. Since we’ve opened our doors, patients have seen results, feel better, lose weight, and get off medications that came with a wide array of side effects. We don’t want to be the biggest practice; we just want to get the most people healthy and transform health care in this community. As we roll out even more innovative, regenerative health treatments, we’re excited to prevent unnecessary surgeries that can take years for people to recover from. Regenerative medicine that we are proud to offer, like powerful stem cells and joint injections, will change health care for the better for patients, helping them escape cycles of prescriptions and become more functional, happy versions of themselves. At Foundations, we believe true healing happens when health care is personalized, comprehensive, and focused on long-term solutions, not just temporary fixes. If you’re ready to take control of your health with a team that genuinely cares, we would love to be on this journey with you.

BIOHACK YOUR WAY TO A HEALTHIER FUTURE Live Longer, Live Smarter
Get your blood tested. Biohacking is all about making data-driven decisions about your health, but how can you make changes without knowing where your health stands? Blood tests provide insight into what you need to fix and allow you to track your progress to ensure you’re making significant progress. Experiment with extreme temperatures. Spending time in a sauna is a great way to increase relaxation, improve heart health, reduce inflammation, and lower cholesterol. However, taking a cold shower or an ice bath could improve circulation, enhance your immune system, reduce inflammation, and more. Add brain games to your daily routine. Your mind is just as important as your body for a long and healthy life. Playing brain games like sudoku, crossword puzzles, and Scrabble can help keep your mind sharp and focus fresh. Phone apps have made it easier than ever to enjoy new brain games!
We all want to live long, healthy lives, but achieving this feat is not as easy as speaking it into existence. It requires intentional actions to extend a lifespan and keep illness and chronic conditions at bay. While diet and exercise play a vital role in our health, a new emerging
trend is producing promising results. Biohacking utilizes biology, technology, and self-experimentation to optimize our bodies and minds.
One unique aspect of biohacking is personalization. We all have different bodies, so we all need a customized program to maximize our health. To try biohacking, you must first reflect on your health and identify an area you want to improve. You then figure out how to fix that problem area by adjusting your diet, lifestyle, or exercise routine. Then, test your hypothesis, recording detailed results from your efforts. Here are three forms of biohacking you can try using to boost your brain and body.
Though there’s a lot of trial and error involved, once you find what works for your body, you’ll never look back.
Unlock Your Body’s Natural Healing Power With Regenerative Medicine PAIN RELIEF WITHOUT PILLS
recovering from an injury or looking for alternatives to surgery, regenerative medicine is a safe and effective path to feeling your best. What is regenerative medicine? Regenerative medicine is an exciting and rapidly growing facet of health care that goes far beyond your symptoms, targeting the underlying causes of diseases and injuries. Many of these therapies employ powerful stem cells to help your body repair damaged tissue, grow new cells, revitalize your skin, and even speed up wound recovery. How does it work? Regenerative medicine procedures, like stem cell injections, work by using your natural healing abilities to repair damaged areas. Think of stem cells as the body’s repair crew: specialized cells that transform into the tissue (like muscle, cartilage, or bone) your body needs to heal. When injected directly into an injured area, they multiply and repair the damage from the inside out. The injection is noninvasive and pain-free, and patients can start seeing relief as early as a few weeks. Other regenerative therapies, like PRP (protein rich
plasma) or HA (hyaluronic acid), encourage your body’s cells to grow and form new healthy tissue. Your doctor will create a tiny, bio-friendly frame or scaffold that matches the tissue you are replacing, giving your body a blueprint to build itself back up. Is regenerative medicine right for me? Regenerative medicine can help treat a wide variety of conditions, such as arthritis, muscle tears and strains, degenerative diseases like osteoarthritis, and soft tissue damage. If traditional treatments, medications, or surgeries have been unsuccessful for you, these versatile therapies can make all the difference. Along with providing longer-lasting results, many patients experience far shorter recovery times than surgeries. These are not one- size-fits-all solutions to mask symptoms; they are hyper-personalized to meet your needs. At Foundations Health and Physical Medicine, we want to empower you to live a pain-free, active lifestyle without invasive drugs and surgeries. Contact us today to schedule a consultation and learn how regenerative medicine can transform your health.
Imagine your body having the power to heal itself naturally and effectively without relying on pain medications or invasive surgeries. NO MATTER WHERE SUMMER TAKES YOU
Summer is the perfect time for an adventure or a great trip, but just because you’re packing your bags doesn’t mean you have to put your physical therapy on hold. Whether you’re hitting the road for a weekend getaway or flying across the country, staying on top of your PT routine will keep you feeling strong and injury-free. With a little extra planning and the right exercises, you can continue to work on your well-being while creating fun summer memories.
Plan ahead with your PT. Before you pack your bags, make a plan with your physical therapist. We can share exercises that are easy to complete on the go and stay aligned with your overall goals. Certain types of physical activity, like yoga or walking in place, can be done from your hotel room, the park, or the beach. You can also pack many portable PT tools, like resistance bands or mini foam rollers, so you can save some space in your suitcase. Stay consistent and motivated. Even though you’re on vacation, try to stay consistent with a modified PT routine. Committing to even 10–15-minute sessions a couple of times a day can be effective. If you’re looking for extra motivation, get your travel companions on board and have them join you on evening walks or at the hotel gym. You deserve time to relax, so don’t push yourself too hard. Set small, realistic goals that ensure you are still working on your PT plan, but don’t miss out on the fun. Track your progress and celebrate the wins. While you enjoy your summer travels, it’s important to stay connected to your progress. Keep a simple log of your exercises and any challenges or progress you experience so you can share that information with your physical therapist. By keeping track of your hard work, you’ll stay focused and motivated and can celebrate the wins along the way. Whether completing a full set of exercises or exploring the city pain-free, these are victories worth acknowledging. Remember, staying committed to your physical therapy routine on vacation doesn’t have to feel like a chore. With a little extra planning and working with your PT ahead of time, you can continue to make progress. For more tips to stay on track with your PT and maximize your wellness journey, check out next month’s Jodi’s PT Corner.
TESTIMONIAL “Highly highly recommended Gloria. She sure helped me in so many ways. I was basically told by my doctor’s nurse that l’d have to deal with feeling lousy. When I went to Gloria, she dug a little deeper and found out the cause of my problem. She’s amazing and doesn’t give up on you.” —D.S.

A Journey to Sandland, Wisconsin’s Subterranean Playground
The Underground Wonderland You Have to Crawl to Believe A Labyrinth Beneath Wisconsin
If you’re up for an adventure like no other, pack your knee pads, grab a headlamp, and crawl into the hidden underground wonder of Sandland, a sprawling maze of tunnels, chambers, and surprises buried beneath western Wisconsin about an hour from the Twin Cities. Created by engineer and thrill-seeker Eric Sutterlin, Sandland is the result of more than a decade of passion, patience, and a little bit of knee pain. What started as a simple project in 2011 has evolved into a labyrinth of Jordan sandstone tunnels carved out by volunteers who are just as excited about exploring as they are about building. As you approach the site, a simple but fitting sign will greet you: “Welcome to Sandland. Take only pictures, leave only footprints.” The adventure begins when you crouch through the 3-foot- tall entrance, which leads to a crawling web of tunnels underground. There’s no standing tall here — you navigate winding passages on your hands and knees, squeezing through tight spaces and wondering what’s lurking around every turn. “I deliberately designed the maze so you can’t see any other intersection from any given intersection because that makes it more confusing and mysterious,” Sutterlin shared
with Wisconsin Public Radio. “The mystery, the question mark, what’s down that tunnel? That’s what a lot of us love.”
Some tunnels lead to dead ends, others host yet-to-be- completed attractions, like an underground slide and a standing-level maze. But the ultimate prize at the end of this adventure? Gabe’s Bar. Named after the volunteer who designed it, this 15-foot-long sandstone bar is like no other watering hole. Everything from the bar to the booths and tables is carved directly into the surrounding stone. Sutterlin, now 44, has invested so many resources and time into Sandland that he’s starting to feel it — literally. Years of crawling have left him with early signs of kneecap arthritis, but he’s not slowing down anytime soon. For him, this is more than just a passion project; it’s a legacy. “If Sandland was only going to last 30 years, we wouldn’t be digging at all. That wouldn’t be much benefit for our efforts,” Sutterlin explained. “But since it’s likely to last 1,000 years, hopefully, thousands, if not tens of thousands of people will get to crawl through and have this unique experience they’ll remember for the rest of their lives. That’s a huge motivation to keep on digging and make it as exciting as we can.”
