WATER SAFETY TIPS & LAW

FIRE EVENTS

WATER TIPS FOR CHANHASSEN'S LAKES

CHANHASSEN FIRE DEPARTMENT SUMMER EVENTS

Chanhassen’s picturesque lakes are a favorite spot for swimmers, boaters and anyone looking to enjoy a sunny day by the water. While they’re perfect for recreation, our lakes also demand respect. To ensure your outings are filled with joy (and not unexpected swims to shore), here are some water safety tips: Stay Afloat This Summer With These Water Safety Tips

1. Life Jackets Save Lives (and Your Pride) It’s tempting to skip the life jacket because you’re a “strong swimmer” or don’t want tan lines—but don’t. Even the best swimmers can get tired or caught off guard by waves, wind or cold water. Plus, life jackets aren’t just a good idea; Minnesota law requires them for children under 10 on boats. Wearing one shows

4. Weather Wins Every Argument Minnesota weather is as unpredictable as a toddler with candy. If the sky looks ominous or the wind picks up, play it safe and head to shore. Lightning and water don’t mix—unless you’re looking to star in your own disaster movie. 5. Have a Float Plan (and a Backup Plan) Before heading out, let someone know your plans, especially if you’re going solo. Phones don’t always work on the water, so make sure someone knows where you’ll be and when you’ll be back. A little planning can go a long way in preventing big problems. Our lakes are here to be enjoyed but safety should always come first. Following these tips will help ensure that your lake days are memorable for all the right reasons. Stay safe out there, Chanhassen—because life jackets are cool and so are you. For more information, contact the Carver County Sheriff's Department at carvercountymn.gov/departments/county-sheriff or at 952.361.1212.

Fishing with First Responders is a great chance for your child to unplug and enjoy a day in the great outdoors with positive role models. Kids ages 5-15 are welcome to join first responders on the Lake Ann fishing pier on June 12 from 9-10:30 a.m. (group A) or 1-2:30 p.m. (group B). This program offers the thrill of catching a fish, provides equipment and basic instruction, and gives kids the chance to bond with their local first responders. Poles, bait and tackle are provided or feel free to bring your own pole if you have one. Your kids won’t want to miss this chance to get to know their local heroes. This is a free program and please only register for one group. Participating partners include the Carver County Sheriff’s Office, Chanhassen Fire Department and Minnesota DNR. you value your safety more than your suntan. 2. Don’t Test Your Inner Olympian

Swimming across the lake might seem like a fun challenge but it’s also a great way to exhaust yourself halfway. Stick to designated swimming areas, and if you’re boating or paddling, keep an eye out for swimmers—especially the overconfident ones who think they’re Michael Phelps. 3. Booze and Boats Don’t Mix A day on the lake can quickly go from “relaxing” to “reckless” when alcohol is involved. Operating a boat under the influence isn’t just illegal—it’s incredibly dangerous. Save the celebratory drink for when you’re safely back on shore.

THE QUESTION I GET ASKED THE MOST IS...

"Is there a lot of crime in Chanhassen?”

When people ask me about crime in Chanhassen, I like to share that, while incidents do occur, they aren’t a daily worry for our residents. Between 2023 and 2024, deputies responded to close to 1,000 criminal events. That might sound like a lot at first glance but it’s important to consider that, during that same period, our deputies responded to nearly 20,000 calls for service! This means that criminal events represent just a tiny fraction of the overall activity and more serious crimes—like assaults or homicides—are even rarer. Chanhassen has remained a safe community to live and work largely due to proactive law enforcement and a strong sense of community. Your local deputies work diligently to handle incidents promptly, conduct thorough follow-up investigations and keep your neighborhoods safe. The community’s trust in the Sheriff’s Office and the collaborative spirit among residents contribute to a quality of life that many other areas aspire to. It’s also important to note that traffic safety is a priority here. While calls related to traffic issues are part of the daily routine, they are addressed with the same care and urgency as any other public safety matter. Whether it’s helping drivers navigate hazards or enforcing traffic laws, our law enforcement team ensures that our roads are safe for everyone. While no community is completely free of crime, Chanhassen’s numbers show that it remains a safe, welcoming place where residents can enjoy a high quality of life.

YOUR CITY AT WORK

Meet Economic Development Manager Samantha DiMaggio

When a new business opens in Chanhassen or a construction project gets underway, it’s not just a coincidence—it’s the result of careful planning, strategic connections and a dedicated effort to support economic growth. At the heart of these efforts is Samantha DiMaggio, Chanhassen’s Economic Development Manager, who works every day to strengthen the city’s business community and create opportunities for entrepreneurs. With a background deeply rooted in small business—both in her professional life and her family history—DiMaggio understands firsthand the challenges and opportunities that business owners face. She sees herself as a business concierge, a problem solver and a connector, helping local businesses navigate zoning regulations, find financing solutions and access the resources they need to thrive. “My role is really about matchmaking,” DiMaggio explains. “Whether it’s helping a business owner find the right space, introducing them to potential partners or providing guidance on available financial incentives, I’m here to support them at every step.” Helping Businesses Succeed One of DiMaggio’s key responsibilities is working with both new and established businesses to ensure they have the tools to grow. She meets regularly with business owners, learning about their needs and finding ways the city can assist. From securing funding to navigating the permitting process, her goal is to make Chanhassen a welcoming place for businesses of all sizes.

Chanhassen’s Three-Year Economic

Development Plan lays out a roadmap for the city’s business growth, emphasizing entrepreneurship, redevelopment of underutilized properties and a balanced mix of commercial and residential projects. DiMaggio plays a vital role in implementing these strategies,

Retiming Project Delivers Big Benefits

MAKING A DIFFERENCE If you’ve driven along West 78 th Street recently, you may have noticed a smoother commute. That’s because, in December 2024, six traffic signals along the corridor were “retimed” as part of the Powers Boulevard and West 78 th Street traffic signal replacement project. While adjusting signal timing might seem like a small tweak, the results speak for themselves—less congestion, reduced emissions and significant cost savings for drivers. By analyzing traffic flow and optimizing signal timing, the project successfully cut annual vehicle stops by 1.7 million, reduced traffic delays by 3,548 hours per year and saved 13,868 gallons of fuel annually. These improvements not only make daily travel more efficient but also contribute to better air quality by reducing carbon monoxide emissions by nearly 1,000 kilograms per year.

The total cost of the “retiming” effort was $12,500 but the estimated annual economic benefit is a staggering $261,273— resulting in a benefit-to-cost ratio of 21:1. In other words, for every dollar invested in retiming the signals, the community is seeing a $21 return in reduced fuel consumption, time savings and environmental benefits. This project is a perfect example of how small, strategic infrastructure improvements can have a big impact on residents' daily lives. Whether you're commuting to work, running errands or just passing through, these updates mean less time sitting at red lights and more time getting where you need to go.

role in shaping Chanhassen’s identity. A Vision for Growth Economic development is about thoughtful growth and DiMaggio is committed to ensuring Chanhassen remains a great place to do business while maintaining its small-town charm. She believes that every thriving city needs a balance of large employers, small businesses and a diverse range of industries to remain strong. As Chanhassen continues to evolve, DiMaggio’s role is more important than ever. Her work isn’t just about business— it’s about shaping the future of the city, creating a community where businesses succeed, residents benefit and Chanhassen continues to be one of the best places to live and work. Want to learn more? Head to our YouTube channel to watch our new series on economic development called “The Local.”

ensuring that businesses not only open in Chanhassen but also stay and flourish. Connecting the Community Beyond supporting businesses, DiMaggio’s work has a direct impact on residents. A strong local economy means more jobs, vibrant shopping and dining options, and a community where people can live and work without having to leave town. Through programs like Business Retention & Expansion (BR&E) surveys, she gathers insights from business owners to shape policies that foster economic resilience. She also helps cultivate a sense of place by facilitating events that bring the business and residential communities together. Whether it’s Small Business Saturday, a new restaurant opening or a manufacturing tour, she is always looking for ways to highlight the local economy’s

How did that business get here?

CHAN 101:

How Does the City Determine What Businesses Are in Chanhassen?

The City’s Role: Zoning and a Supportive Environment While the city doesn’t select businesses, it does play a role in shaping where different types of businesses can go through its zoning ordinances, which are informed by the City’s Comprehensive Plan and 2040 land use map. The land use map divides the city into different land-use categories, such as residential, commercial and industrial and then identifies specific zoning districts eligible based on the property's land use designation. If a business fits within the land use and zoning rules for a particular area, it can open there, provided it meets all other local and state regulations. The city also works to create a business-friendly environment by investing in infrastructure, streamlining permit processes and maintaining a high quality of life that makes Chanhassen an attractive place to do business. While the city can’t hand-pick businesses, it remains committed to fostering a strong local economy where businesses can thrive.

Have you ever wished for a specific restaurant, grocery store or shop to open in Chanhassen? You’re not alone! Many residents wonder how businesses decide where to open—and whether the city has any say in the process. The answer might surprise you: The City of Chanhassen does not choose which specific businesses move in. The city does establish areas for businesses through city zoning ordinances but ultimately it’s a market-driven process that depends on private business decisions. The Role of the Market Businesses—whether national chains or small local entrepreneurs—decide where to locate based on market conditions. Factors like the number of homes in the area, population size, income levels, traffic patterns and proximity to competitors all play a role in whether a business chooses to open in Chanhassen. Large chains often have site selection teams that analyze demographics and sales potential before making a decision.

“My role is really about matchmaking, whether it’s helping a business owner find the right space, introducing them to potential partners or providing guidance on available financial incentives, I’m here to support them at every step.”

ENVIRONMENTAL EVENTS

BE A MN NATIVE THIS SUMMER Eco-friendly ways to enjoy this Minnesota season

ENVIRONMENTAL SUMMER

Water Your Lawn Using Best Practices Reduce your water use by implementing best watering practices. Water your lawn early in the morning, between 5-9 a.m., to allow water to soak in the soil before the heat of the day and to reduce the risk of evaporation. Consider a Soil Test Testing your soil before applying fertilizers will help you understand the composition of your soil. This will ensure you’re applying the correct type and amount of fertilizers to your yard or garden. soiltest.cfans.umn.edu

Mulch Around Trees Mulching around your trees has a lot of benefits! Mulch helps to maintain moisture levels and soil temperature, creating an optimal environment for root growth. You also reduce the amount of grass you have to tend to when mowing your lawn. Don’t Prune Oak Trees During Growing Season Oak wilt is a fungal disease that is spread both underground via root grafts and above ground by sap beetles. The best way to limit the spread of oak wilt is to not move firewood and to wait to prune oak trees until the low-risk season.

Gnomadic Gnome: Magic of Nature Visit The Garden by the Woods between April 22 and May 3 to pick up your adventure buddy. Take them on magical quests to 15 parks throughout Chanhassen. For every five quests you complete, visit the Garden by the Woods to gather five native plants. If you visit all 15 parks, you will be entered to win a grand prize of over $500 worth of mulch! For more information, visit ChanhassenMN.gov/GnomadicGnome

Arbor Day - Tree Planting Event Come join us for our annual Arbor Day tree planting event on Saturday, May 3 at Roundhouse Park starting at 9 a.m. Shovels and gloves will be provided to volunteers. We’ll start with a demo planting and then get started with planting trees! For more information, visit the website ChanhassenMN.gov/ArborDay Sprinkling Irrigation Restrictions MAY 1 - SEPTEMBER 30

Opt for Reusables

Minimize waste at the beach by using reusable sandwich bags and water bottles. Reusable bottles keep drinks cooler longer and help avoid the confusion of misplacing your bottle, ensuring you don’t wonder if it’s yours or someone else’s. Ash Trees: How to Help Have an ash tree in your yard? If you’re not protecting it with an insecticide treatment, it could be infested with emerald ash borer— an invasive insect that kills ash trees. If you have ash trees in good condition, schedule a consultation to have it treated or start making plans for removal and replacement.

Yard Waste Drop-Off Site Starting April 7, residents may drop off yard waste Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., excluding holidays. Summer hours will be in effect after Memorial Day, which means that Public Works will close at noon on Fridays. Payment can be made at Public Works during business hours by cash, check or card. Residents must check in at the Public Works office and show proof of residency. Fees are $1/bag and $15/pick-up truck or small trailer load. Did you know? Improperly disposed yard waste can harm our local water resources by contributing to phosphorous and nitrogen loading. For more information, visit the website ChanhassenMN.gov/YardWaste

The most eco-friendly way to manage Japanese Beetles is by manually knocking them off leaves into a bucket of soapy water. Traps are not recommended, as they attract beetles to the area and often fail to catch them. Buckthorn Control Buckthorn is an invasive weed in Chanhassen that is designated as restricted by the USDA. It can't be imported, transported or sold in MN. Buckthorn management methods Reduce, Reuse, Repair Each season brings new activities. Instead of buying new items, visit Fix-it Clinics for free bike or lawn mower repairs. Daily irrigation restrictions are in effect from May 1 through September 30. If your address ends in an odd number, you may sprinkle on odd days of the month; if it ends in an even number, you may sprinkle on even days of the month. All properties are prohibited from sprinkling daily between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Permits for daily watering of new sod (14 days) and seed (21 days) can be obtained from the Engineering Department at no cost. If a shortage threatens the water supply, the city may limit the use, times and hours during which city water may be used. Watering the grass thoroughly a few times a week is better for your lawn long-term than using a sprinkler on it each day.
