ENVIRONMENTAL SUMMER
Water Your Lawn Using Best Practices Reduce your water use by implementing best watering practices. Water your lawn early in the morning, between 5-9 a.m., to allow water to soak in the soil before the heat of the day and to reduce the risk of evaporation. Consider a Soil Test Testing your soil before applying fertilizers will help you understand the composition of your soil. This will ensure you’re applying the correct type and amount of fertilizers to your yard or garden. soiltest.cfans.umn.edu
Mulch Around Trees Mulching around your trees has a lot of benefits! Mulch helps to maintain moisture levels and soil temperature, creating an optimal environment for root growth. You also reduce the amount of grass you have to tend to when mowing your lawn. Don’t Prune Oak Trees During Growing Season Oak wilt is a fungal disease that is spread both underground via root grafts and above ground by sap beetles. The best way to limit the spread of oak wilt is to not move firewood and to wait to prune oak trees until the low-risk season.

Japanese Beetles in the Garden
Opt for Reusables
Minimize waste at the beach by using reusable sandwich bags and water bottles. Reusable bottles keep drinks cooler longer and help avoid the confusion of misplacing your bottle, ensuring you don’t wonder if it’s yours or someone else’s. Ash Trees: How to Help Have an ash tree in your yard? If you’re not protecting it with an insecticide treatment, it could be infested with emerald ash borer— an invasive insect that kills ash trees. If you have ash trees in good condition, schedule a consultation to have it treated or start making plans for removal and replacement.
Yard Waste Drop-Off Site Starting April 7, residents may drop off yard waste Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., excluding holidays. Summer hours will be in effect after Memorial Day, which means that Public Works will close at noon on Fridays. Payment can be made at Public Works during business hours by cash, check or card. Residents must check in at the Public Works office and show proof of residency. Fees are $1/bag and $15/pick-up truck or small trailer load. Did you know? Improperly disposed yard waste can harm our local water resources by contributing to phosphorous and nitrogen loading. For more information, visit the website ChanhassenMN.gov/YardWaste
The most eco-friendly way to manage Japanese Beetles is by manually knocking them off leaves into a bucket of soapy water. Traps are not recommended, as they attract beetles to the area and often fail to catch them. Buckthorn Control Buckthorn is an invasive weed in Chanhassen that is designated as restricted by the USDA. It can't be imported, transported or sold in MN. Buckthorn management methods Reduce, Reuse, Repair Each season brings new activities. Instead of buying new items, visit Fix-it Clinics for free bike or lawn mower repairs. Daily irrigation restrictions are in effect from May 1 through September 30. If your address ends in an odd number, you may sprinkle on odd days of the month; if it ends in an even number, you may sprinkle on even days of the month. All properties are prohibited from sprinkling daily between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Permits for daily watering of new sod (14 days) and seed (21 days) can be obtained from the Engineering Department at no cost. If a shortage threatens the water supply, the city may limit the use, times and hours during which city water may be used. Watering the grass thoroughly a few times a week is better for your lawn long-term than using a sprinkler on it each day.
