DRIVING A CLASSIC CAR TO CALIFORNIA Where the myth of freedom begins The centennial of the iconic Route 66 has transformed the Windy City into the epicentre of American nostalgia, from blues clubs to mythical roadhouses C hicago is a place where Michigan; a city of raw blues, powerful architec- skyscrapers are reflected in the vast waters of Lake ture and sporting pride. However, the Windy City is this July becoming a gateway to the very heart of the Amer- ican myth. That’s because it was in the month of July precisely one century ago that plans were finalised for the
route that would become the lifeblood of American consciousness and the world’s most famous road: Route 66. Nicknamed “The Mother Road”, this asphalt river covering nearly 4,000 kilometres officially begins right in the heart of Chicago, at the inter- section of Adams Street and Michigan Avenue. Marked by a modest yet icon- ic sign that reads “BEGIN”, this ge- ographical icon stands as testament
to a time when travel was equated with discovery, rather than just reach- ing a destination. The City of Chica- go is this month reviving the spirit of that golden era with major street festi- vals, exhibitions of immaculately pre- served classic cars from the 1920s and ‘50s, and openair concerts that trans- port attendees back to a time when everything was slower, but somehow more real.
