Pozornica bez pravila Stage without rules

W hile the summer breeze blows from Lake Ontario and refreshes the streets of Can- ada’s largest city, Toronto’s cultural scene experiences its most creative anarchy. The Toronto Fringe Festival, Ontario’s larg- est independent theatre and arts event, has for decades rep- resented the epitome of democracy in the arts. The concept is fascinatingly simple: here there are no juries, no censor- ship and no selectors deciding who is “good” enough to per- form. The artists are selected through a lottery draw system, which means that everyone from established theatre compa- nies to complete amateurs can get their chance to shine under the spotlight. Over the course of twelve July days (to Sunday 12 th ), more than 100 theatre companies perform at over 30 locations across the city. The repertoire is totally unpredictable: dur- ing the same day, you can watch avant-garde drama, hilarious stand-up comedy, experimental musicals or provocative con- temporary dance. Performances are often held at alternative venues, in basements, parks and even in the back seats of cars. The Toronto Fringe is a place where new theatre trends are born and the audience has a unique opportunity to discov- er hidden talents before they become global stars. This is an exciting cultural roulette for visitors, where the only rule is to expect the unexpected.
