FEATURED RADIO MESSAGE

by Walter L. W ilson H ave you ever thought how much Christians are like leaves? In Isaiah 64:6, we read, “We all do fade as a leaf.” Only God can make a leaf. Each leaf denotes the plant, the bush, or the tree from which it fell. Leaves in the Bible are a type of the profession which may or may not be accompanied by fruit. Our Lord found a fig tree on which there was nothing but leaves. He expects more than leaves in our own lives. Because there are a lot of things you don’t do is no proof you are a Christian. The devil has a lot of children that live beautiful lives. Leaves are bom to die. They ap pear in the spring and fall in the autumn. Some fall full sized, unmar red, beautifully colored, glorious in tin ts; others fall curled, shrunken, seared and yellow. The condition of the leaf tells either a story of protec tion and progress, or a story of ad versity and hardship. People can tell by looking at us what kind of a life we have had. Some fall in the midst of the summer of life, from the glori ous heights of the tree tops, to the gutter of the street. Some hang on through all the storms of the season. Some believers become more beauti ful as they grow older. Others, how ever, become more cruel as age creeps

on. In our social system, the older men, w h o have served faithfully through the years, are pushed out of the way; they lose their position be cause of the advent of younger men. The leaf, too, must leave its accus tomed place, cast aside to wither, wilt and waste away. One day, I found a fig tree on which there were very large, soft, lovely, velvety leaves. I took one of the largest from the tree and pinned it up on a wall. It was about as large as a dinner plate. By evening it had torn loose from all the thumb tacks but one. It was about the size of the top of a teacup. I thought how Adam and Eve must have felt when those fig leaves they had on kept shrinking and shrinking until they just didn’t cover their bodies at all. They hid from God when they found they were naked. The fig leaves represent our own profession, self-righteousness, a n d good works. How quickly these things get thread-bare. Nothing we do will stand the test of God’s Son, for when He looks upon us with those flaming eyes of fire, then we too will shrink and shrivel. We must be covered with the precious blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. 23
