MAY 2024
My mother’s prized rosebushes are a bit of a family legacy. For many years, Mom has cared for her roses with dedication and a passion for gardening, allowing them to stand the test of time. In many ways, my mother tended to my family, too, helping us all as we grew. My parents have always taken excellent care of their lawns, and ever since I was little, they have passed on their plant knowledge to me. Celebrating Mother’s Day With Family Planting Traditions A GARDEN OF FAMILY MEMORIES
Even if your mom isn’t the horticulturist that mine is, landscaping services or a yard makeover makes an excellent gift for Mother’s Day — and Father’s Day, too. Here at Anthony’s Lawn Care, May is super busy as it is ideal for planting. We think of this time as the kick-off to our busy season. Right now, we have a lot of people coming in to get their yards ready before all the family picnics and get-togethers. If you want something special to treat your mom this year, we’re offering a Mother’s Day discount. We’ll give you 25% off any projects specifically for Mother’s Day. A brand new, beautiful flowering shrub or tree would be an easy way to spruce up your mom’s yard. It’s also a great time of year to vacuum leaves in the yard, trim existing shrubs and trees, install some fresh river rock, or try out some new decorative landscaping.
This month is Mother’s Day, and I can’t imagine a better way to pay tribute to my mother than sharing a little bit of our family’s planting history. As most readers know, I give much credit to my parents for where I am today, and we still love being together in the garden. My parents’ lawn and garden are top- notch, so when it comes to celebrating them, they’re pretty easy to please. We always start with some plants.
I’m so thankful to both of my parents for growing with me in the garden and growing me as a person. When you plant things together with your family, it creates something extraordinary. So, I encourage you to spend some time outdoors with your mom and family this Mother’s Day.
Those interested in doing a Mother’s Day project with us should book ASAP, as we do get busy and want to ensure the surprise is ready to go before the big day. Contact us at 812-345-5694 or

flowers, and there’s yet to be a plant she hasn’t found a perfect home for in their yard. When we have family get-togethers, we tend to gravitate to great outdoor spaces where we can grill, enjoy a meal, relax, and hang out together. It’s all the more reason for us to ensure the yard looks pristine before family holiday gatherings happen.

With the beautiful outdoor weather, locals with green thumbs are likely envisioning their next great gardening project. However, you must always work with Mother Nature and her changing seasons. When it comes to gardening, timing can be everything! Knowing your first and last frost dates can make all the difference if you want to have the most successful crops and blooms. Things are already heating up here in Bloomington, with the season’s last frost coming at the end of April. But there is still a short window of time from now until early June to get some summer plants in before the fall season arrives. Paw-some Adventures
GEAR UP YOUR PUP FOR A HIKING ADVENTURE
Setting out on a hiking adventure with your furry friend is a rewarding experience, but ensuring their safety and comfort on the trail requires careful consideration of essential gear. Before heading out, consider your dog’s unique needs and preferences so it’s an enjoyable and bonding adventure for you both. Here’s an introduction to some must-have hiking gear for your canine companion. FOOD AND WATER One of the most important aspects of hiking is staying well-nourished and hydrated. Packing more water than you think may be necessary is crucial, especially on a trail where natural water sources may be scarce. An ample supply of dog-friendly food is also essential, with the quantity adjusted based on the hike’s duration. A collapsible bowl will be handy for feeding your canine companion during breaks. FIRST-AID KIT Safety should always come first. A dog first-aid kit is indispensable for addressing unexpected issues on the trail. These compact kits typically include dressings, bandages, and tools for removing ticks or thorns. Being prepared for minor injuries ensures you can safely complete the hike without making any injury worse. BOOTS While some dogs may resist wearing boots, they can be a lifesaver in challenging terrains. Opt for boots that protect without compromising comfort. Though you likely may avoid trails with terrain that could harm your dog’s paws, having boots in your pack is, at least, a proactive measure for unforeseen circumstances, ensuring your canine companion’s paws are protected if needed. WASTE BAGS Be responsible out on the trail. That means bringing poop bags. Attach them to the outside of your backpack or tote bag for convenient access once your dog has completed its business. The “leave no trace” practice will help maintain the pristine beauty of the trail for everyone to enjoy. EMERGENCY HARNESS Preparedness is critical, and an emergency harness adds an extra layer of safety. A proper harness will allow you to carry your dog on your back in an emergency. This versatile harness ensures that you can provide assistance in challenging situations.
FLOWERS The best time of year to grow flowers depends on the variety. Annuals, like marigolds, must be planted yearly, and perennial flowers, like Coral Bells, only need to be planted once or until the previous flower has lived its full life and needs replacement. You should plant both cool and warm-season annuals in the spring, but warm-season annuals should come a little later, around mid-May, in case any late frosts chill the ground. During the fall, you can plant a few flower options, especially perennials like irises. SHRUBS Shrubs are perennial plants that will continue to grow after you plant them. The best time to plant new shrubs is in the fall. Though these plants are hardy and can thrive in other seasons, the fall weather is cool enough that there will be no above-ground growth and all the plant’s energy can go into establishing solid roots. Fall is also a wetter season in Indiana, which will be helpful for this type of plant. If fall doesn’t fit your plans, early spring is the next best bet for shrubs. TREES The easiest way to plant trees is by transplanting one that has already reached its early stages of growth. A tree is vulnerable at this point without an established root system, so it’s crucial to plant it at the right time for the best outcome. Early spring is best so you beat out the frost of fall and the heat of the summer. There are many options for plants to fill your entire year with gardening projects; it’s just a matter of knowing what will thrive best in the season. If you need advice or help with your planting schedule, contact us at Anthony’s Lawn Care because we have the timing down to a science.

MOLE MISCHIEF AND DEER DETERRENCE
HOW TO PROTECT YOUR YARD FROM ANIMALS
Who doesn’t enjoy a visit from one of Indiana’s cute woodland creatures? We have many animals in the area, but you don’t want to get caught like a deer in the headlights when they start to eat your beautiful lawn and garden. Deer and moles are two critters that can cause
barrier. You can deter moles from entering your yard by planting daffodils and marigolds; they hate their smell. There are also repellents you can purchase for both moles and deer.
CREATE BARRIERS Create physical barriers in your design plan to keep animals out. Deer can jump quite well, so build fencing at least 8 feet high, slanted to prevent them from entering your yard. You can also fortify your plants by putting netting over them so deer can’t access the greenery. It’s a challenge with moles because these animals are incredible diggers, capable of burrowing 18 feet in about an hour. The best deterrents are in-ground fences with wire underneath the ground. REPAIR DAMAGE It’s crucial to keep an eye on your yard for any kind of damage from moles or deer. Not only will this alert you to deterrents that are not working, but it will also give you ample time to repair the damage. If deer eat your shrubs, it’s essential to replace them. With moles, you will find telltale mounds of dirt in your lawn where they have tunneled. You must either compact those mounds yourself or hire a professional and add new grass. By choosing the right plants and set-up for your home landscaping, you can enjoy the deer that visit as well as your freshly grown leafy greens. severe damage to your landscaping. They can be tricky to keep out, and it’s nearly impossible to
control them, but you can take steps to deter them and manage the damage.
RESISTANT PLANTS The main foods deer like to eat are also very popular with local gardeners, like lettuce and fruit trees. One of the best ways to protect your
garden from becoming a buffet is by selecting native plants that deer aren’t interested in. Aromatic plants like sage, rosemary, oregano, mint, thyme, dill, catnip, and lavender will dissuade deer from eating your other vegetables. Make sure to situate deer-resistant plants on the perimeters of your yard and around the veggies they find tasty to act as a Take A Break

Techniques to Preserve Your Garden From Wildlife Take a Break 4 Beautiful, Low-Maintenance Outdoor Flower Arrangements
Create a Stunning Flower Planter —
With Minimal Effort
TURN THE POT UPSIDE DOWN AND STICK IT IN THE PLANTER. If you’re using the right pot, you won’t be able to see it from the outside, and you’ll have enough space for the basket to sit on top without it being taller than the upper rim of the planter but not too low, either.
As any gardener will tell you, gardening is hard but has an incredible payoff. Yet rewarding as it may be, much toil and sweat goes into every plant. Not everyone wants to spare the time. If you long for flourishing flora around your home but are leery of the time commitment, you’re in luck. Creating a vibrant flower display with little to no effort is easy.
LOWER THE HANGING FLOWER BASKET ONTO THE POT IN THE PLANTER. The flowers in the basket should fill the entire space, creating the illusion of a beautiful, stunning flower arrangement you grew and potted yourself. If you see gaps between the flowers and the planter rim, adjust the height of the pot underneath or find a smaller planter.
The end goal of this project is to fill an outdoor planter with flowers. To call this a “project” at all does a disservice to projects, which typically require some degree of work. This undertaking only requires a few minutes and zero maintenance.
YOU’LL NEED A PLANTER, A HANGING BASKET FULL OF BLOOMING FLOWERS, AND A POT. Planters come in all shapes and sizes; square, wooden planters look especially nice. It can be any planter if it fits your chosen basket. The hanging flower basket should overflow with blooming flowers with a hanger in the middle you can remove. Lastly, the pot will be used to elevate the basket in the planter, and it won’t be seen, so use whichever vessel you have lying around. Just a simple clay pot will do. It should be about half the size of the planter.
TAKE THE HANGER OFF THE BASKET. The hanger is easy to remove on most baskets; you can usually just twist it off. A few aren’t removable, necessitating cutting tools to snip the three wires attached to the pot. Congratulations, you’ve done it! In less than 15 minutes, you’ve created a stunning display to enliven your outdoor space. Nothing is preventing you from doing it for inside arrangements, either.
