How this role supports Professional Services By working together with the Director of Facilities to ensure that the university: • Plans asset and infrastructure replacement and maintenance needs against academic and research objectives, and aspirations. • Obtains the maximum value from its existing infrastructure investment in people, plant, and financial resources. • Drive down total cost of asset maintenance. • Drives up overall asset availability and reliability. • Supporting and ensuring that the university follows UK standards and best practice/innovation in its asset management. • Provides professional engineering and estates expertise to Site Directors, estates staff, other directors, senior management, other internal customers and partners. Oveview • The Head of Engineering is responsible for providing the direction, oversight, and coordination of all functions and activities of the Asset Management function, including Engineering, Plant Operations, Compliance, Operational Contract Management, Lifecycle Replacement and Minor Works. • The Head of Engineering will assume overall responsibility for the safe and efficient functioning, maintenance and operation of all buildings, equipment, machinery, systems, and services. • The Head of Engineering will direct, plan, coordinate, and is administratively and professionally responsible for the proper installation, operation and maintenance of all building assets, systems and services, to ensure the provision of uninterrupted light, heat, cooling, power, water, life safety and monitoring systems and all other systems and services required to support the university’s core business. • Will work closely with the development and project teams on engineering briefs and standards for development projects. • Is responsible for the performance management of external contracts relating to engineering and estates functions, and building and developing an effective supply chain of responsive and innovative suppliers who are able to provide cost effective specialist services. • Is responsible for the development of agreed technical standards that will be applied across the estate, to ensure that all staff and contractors know what is required of them in terms of maintenance, and design & construction contractors understand what has to be delivered in a project especially to facilitate ongoing maintenance. • Provides leadership, direction and senior professional advice in the event of any major incidents that have an engineering and/or estates dimension to the cause and/ or resolution, even to the extent of taking control should the impact be of a serious nature, and if requested. Role profile The Head of Engineering has oversight of, and is accountable for: • Creation of, and operating to, both OPEX and work package CAPEX budgets working closely with the Capital projects teams. • Functional and Pastoral management of all staff within the Asset Management team. • Performance and development of all staff within the Asset Management team. • Creation and execution of short, medium and long term tactical and strategic asset and infrastructure investment plans. • Ongoing economic and efficient management and operation of the university’s building assets, infrastructure, systems, and services.
