The Housemaster

with his wife, Anita, who is a primary teacher, and his three young children, Sam, Charlotte, and Sophie. Dr Tom Hawkins, Housemaster Mobile: 022 428 0334 Email: thawkins@christscollege.com

Dr Tom Hawkins has been teaching in some form or another for the past 20 years. Until 2017, that teaching was all outside the classroom, and included SCUBA instruction, study-abroad adventure programmes, university tutoring and field courses, and postgraduate student supervision. Most of that teaching was a part of life as a marine biologist, and Tom spent 2010– 2017 working around the world, investigating the responses of coral reefs to climate change. After noticing that the best parts of his week were always the times spent teaching and mentoring students, he made the switch to secondary school teaching while living in the Cook Islands in 2017. Since moving to New Zealand in 2018, he has also developed a passion for the outdoors, tramping, and mountaineering. Tom re- established the Venture Group as a summer sport option at Christ’s College in 2019 and has organised numerous Duke of Edinburgh trips for boys completing their Gold and Silver Hillary Awards. He still gets out into the Alps whenever time and weather permit. Tom lives in Wigram
