Tom joined Christ’s College in 2019, after transitioning into teaching from an early career as a research scientist. Tom worked in both New Zealand and overseas as a marine biologist investigating the responses of coral reefs to climate change. After noticing that time spent teaching and mentoring students was always the best part of his week, he made the switch to full-time teaching while living in the Cook Islands in 2017 and hasn’t looked back since. At College, Tom quickly settled into the Somes team, becoming Deputy Housemaster in 2020. A keen tramper and mountaineer, he re- established Venture Group as a summer sport option and has organised numerous Duke of Edinburgh trips for boys completing their Gold and Silver Hillary Awards. He still gets out into the Alps whenever time and weather permit. Tom lives in Wigram with his wife, Anita, who is a primary teacher, and their three little ones: Sam, who is three and spends his weekends chasing the ducks at Willowbank Wildlife Reserve; Charlotte, who is two and spends her weekends chasing Sam; and Sophie, who is three months old and spends every day being cute.
Deputy Housemaster/Mentor Erin Rutherford It is Erin’s fourth year at Christ’s College, having been a Somes House mentor throughout her time. Originally from Timaru, Erin studied English and History at the University of Canterbury. Aside from teaching English, Erin is also involved in squash and cricket and helps out with junior tramping ventures. She focuses on creating a positive environment for all students. Outside of College, Erin also enjoys creating art, whether it be painting or crochet, or spending time outdoors with friends and family. Email: erin.rutherford@christscollege.com
