A story for all fo read and ponder is that of the train wreck in Van Cort- landt Park and the death of the engi neer, Hugh Kirk. An eight-foot strip of timber across the track caused the accident. Pinned in the overturned en gine, in the live steam, Hugh Kirk thought only^of the men trying to rescue him. “Go back, boys; this thing might explode any minute,” he warned. “I am pinned in here so tight you can’t get me out. Help the others; Don’t bother about me.” Dying, he was told the fireman had escaped. “I am glad, to hear that,” he said. And at the last, his hand groping through thé steam: “Here’s my watch and money; give them to my wife.” Every thought of the dying engineer was for others. -—Pearls for Preachers, by Hart. TO THE TEACHER: The lesson to day is so full of interesting events that the teacher who knows the story thoroughly will, have no difficulty in holding the attention of the class. For the approach suggested below -you will need a shallow box or platè filled day we are going tq learn about some wonderful events which took place on the shore of a beautiful lake. Let’s, pretend that this, sand is the shore, and this bit of mirror is part of the . lake. This l a k e or s e a had three n ame s , Tiberias, Gennesaret, and - Galilée. (Show the children the lake, on a map of Palestine. It is about thirteen b yvsix miles in area.) One evening there wpre seven men gath ered together on the shore. (Put a toothpick or match‘ into the sand to represent each man as you name him. Tell, the children that thé sons of Zebedee were James and John, while two m e n w e r e not mentioned by name.) Simon Peter said to the other men, “I go a fishing.” , The others answered, “We also go with thee.” , Then they all got into a little boat and fished all night without catohing one.single fish! LESSON STORY: This discouraging night gave way to one of the most won'derful m o r n i n g s t h a t ever 5 -Division with sand or earth. Place a little mir ror or piece of blue paper in one cor- n e r to represent part of the Lake of Tiberias, Have eight toothpicks „or matches to repre sent people. APPROACH: To
Object Lesson A P acked “ P”
OBJECTS: A capital “P,” a red cross, three “D’s,” and three ' “C’s.” (Make these by using five pieces of white paper 8 Y 2 XII inches. Fold all together, making the size 4(4x11 inches. With the fold to your left cut up 7 inches from the bottom, Ve ihch away from the fold. At this point, turn to the right and complete the curved portion of the “P,” ending at the top of the pa per. Remove one of the double “P’s,” and'cut off ¿ sufficient amount of the curved portion to leave a cross. Color this cross red, and refold. Split the other pieces down the fold, and you w ill have 8 “P’s." Cut the upright from 6 of these, and you will have 6 “D’s.” Cut the center upright out of 3 of, the “D’s,” and you will have 3 “C’s.” -This w ill leave 2 “P’s.” Color one “P ” yellow, and the other blue. Color the 3. “D’s” yellow, and the 3 “C’s” blue. Place the “D’s,” thè cross, and the “C’s” between the “P’s” in the Order mentioned, and thumb tack to the left side of the blackboard. Place the thumb tacks with the stems along side of the paper, but not through it, thus .allowing the hidden pieces to be removed without being torn.) Act» 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, arid said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? 38 Then Peter said unto *them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. . 39 For the promise is unto you,- and to your children, and to ail that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. 40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying. Save yourselves from this untoward generation- 41 Then .they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about thnee thousand souls. 3:1 Now Peter arid John went up to gether into the temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour. 2 And a certain man lame from his moth er’s womb was carried, whom they laid Tlaily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered Into the temple; 3 Who, seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, asked an alms. 4 And Peter,, fastening his eyes upon him with John, said, Look on us. 5 And he gave heed unto him, expecting to receive something of them. 6 Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give i thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. 7 And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and Immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength.
LESSON: Here is the packed “P” about which I promised to tell you. The “P” is yellow, and stands for a person who was at one time a coward. “Do you mean Peter?” Yes, because he feared and denied his Lord. I told you the “P” was pack ed, so we will unpack it. First, we find 3 “D’s” which remind us of the three times Peter denied Christ. This was before Christ died on the cross. Next, we find a red cross, reminding us of the cross of Christ. After the crucifixion, Peter was changed. Examining the packed “P” further, we find a blue “P.” Blue is the color for loyalty. We will pin it to the right of the cross. As we lock again in thejpacked “P,” we find 3 blue “C’s,” which tell us of the ,three confessions Peter made, expressing his love and loyalty to Christ. How glad Peter must have been to have an op portunity to express his loyalty to Christ three times, after denying Him thrice! 8 And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God. 4:13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marveled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus. 18 And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and * John answered and said unto them. Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye. 20 For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard. 21 So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding nothing how they might punish them, because of the peo ple: for all men glorifled God for that which was done. GOLDEN T E X T : ’’Now when they saw the boldness of Peter, and John, and per ceived that they were unlearned and ignor ant men, they marveled; and they *onk knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus” (Acts 4:13).
