APPROACH: Who' can n.ame the first four books of the New Testament for us? That is right: Matthew, Mark,

Yes, you are right. T t is well to re member that he did not remain lame. Hidden underneath this black “L,” I fihd another “L” which reminds hie of the Word “Look.’/' Pqter commanded the man#to look, and in the name of Jesus, of Nazareth, he commanded him to rise tip and walk. A cross is hidden under this “L.” It is red, reminding us of the cross on which Christ shed His blood for the sins of the world. It Was the power of Christ, and, noj Peter’s power which caused the healing. - There is still another “L” under neath the black one. We will put it to the right of the cross, in order that it may tell us what the lame man did after he had looked to Christ for heal ing. It stands for the word “Leaped.” Acts $:14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God,/they sent unto them Peter and John; 15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they rriight receive the Holy Ghost: 16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they wece'baptized In the name of the Lord Jesus.) 17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost. 18 And when Slnion saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, 19 Saying, Give me alSo this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost. 20 But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. 21_ Thou-hast neither part nor lot In this matter: for thy heart is not right In the sight of God. 22 Repent therefore of this thy wicked- ness, and pray.God, If perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven three. 23 For I perceive that thou art' in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity. 24 Then answered Simon, ancj said, Pray ye to the^ Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me. 25 And they, when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, and preached the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans. LESSON T E X T : Acts 8:14-25. GOLDEN T E X T : "Lift up your eyes, and lopk on the. fields; for they are white, al ready to harvest" (John 4:35). DEVOTIONAL READING: Psa. 96:1-9. Outline and Exposition ' I. E stablishing B elievers (14-17) N THE providence of God, a per secution against believers broke out, and they were all scattered abroad, except the apostles. Every where ' they went, these disciples preached the Word. One of them, Philip, Went to Samaria and there preached Christ with such power that many were brought to the Lord. When' the news of this spiritual quickening came. to the apostles at Jerusalem, they sent Peter and John to examine the work. The .work was found to be of such realityThat Peter

Luke, These

an d John. flk ■ books tell

us about thè life of t h e L o r d Jesus when He w a s on earth. Now, what is the next book after John? Yes, the Acts of t h e Apostles. In t h e

first chapter of this book we read that just before.,the Lord Jesus was taken up into heaven, He told H is.disciples that they were to be His witnesses on earth. Acts tells us about the wonder ful things that the disciples did in Jesus’ name. Division LESSON STORY: One day Peter and John went up to the'temple to pray. They were about to go through the temple gate which was called Beauti ful, when they saw a poor crippled beggar man who 'wasn’t beautiful at all. This man had been born lame. Every day his friends carried him to the gate so that he could beg for his living. Of coursé, when he saw Peter and John he asked them for money. Instead of giving him money, Peter said something very important to him. (Read or tell verses 4-8 to the chil dren.) Don’t you think that man was the happiest person in the whole temple that day? It is better to have the Lord Jesus Christ than to have all the silver and gold in the whole world. OBJECTS: Four capital “L’s” and a red cross. -(Make these hy using 3 pieces of white paper 8% x li inches. Fold down 4 inches from the top, mak ing the size 8%x7 inches. Fold again- making the size 7x414 inches. With the last fold at your left, begin cut ting % of an inch from the right-hand bottom corner. Cut to the left, to with in % of an inch of the fold. From here cut straight to the top, and you Will have a capital ,fL.” Remove one of the “L ’s.” Unfold, and you have a cross which should be colored red.' Split the two other double “L’s,” and cut off the portion extending below the foot of each; You now have a red cross, and four capital “L’s.” Refold the cross and place it below two of the “ L’s” and above the other two. Color the top “L” black, and the bot tom one blue. Thumb tack to the left side of the blackboard, with the stems of the tacks alongside the paper and. not through it,)’ LESSON: Can you guess whom this black “L ” represents? “ Is it the lame man at the gate of the temple?” Object Lesson L et the “ L ” T ell

The man was so happy that he leaped into the air for joy. A blue “L” is now found. Blue is the color of loyalty. The healed man was loyal to God, for we are told that he weht. into the temple, praising God. . These four “L’s” tell us of the lame man who looked, leaped, and was loyal.

and John immediately prayed t h a t the believing Samaritans might re ceive the Holy Spirit, and after pray ing, they laid their hands upon such as had been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus, and the Holy Spirit was given them. The teacher should note the differ ent ways in which the Holy Spirit was received, during those early days of preaching the ri§en Christ, record ed in the Book of the Acts. Sometimes the Spirit was given immediately up on belief, sometimes by the laying on of hands, and sometimes in other ways. The place and condition seem, to be the governing principle. It is one thing to believe in Christ, to be baptized, and to receive the Holy Spirit, but it is another thing to be established In the faith. The only One Who can establish the believer is the Holy Spirit, who is now given to all who believe, without their waiting longer. When there is little reliance upon the Spirit, there is little stabil ity and growth in the faith. II. C orrecting S elfishness ( 18-24) When Simon, who was a sorcerer and self-seeker, saw that by laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Spirit was given, he desired to have the same power through his hands.
