Proverbs 20:1 Wine Is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise. 23:29 Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? 30 They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine. 31 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his color in the cup, when it moveth itself aright. 32 At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder. 33 Thine eyes shall behold strange wom en, and thine heart shall utter perverse things. , . . ; 34 Yea-, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast. 35 They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again. Matthew 24:45 Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat In due season? - . . . 46 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. 47 Verily l say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods. 46 But and if that evil servant shall say In his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; 49 And shall begin to smite his fellow servants, and to eat and drink with the drunken; . . . . 50 The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in ah hour that he is not aware of, 51 And shall cut him asunder, and ap point him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. GOLDEN T E X T : “ At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder (Prov. 23:32), . J _ „„ DEVOTIONAL READING: Gal. 6:7-10. Outline and Exposition I. T he j C haracter of W ine (Prov. 20:1) W INE I S . a “mocker.” This right thoughts are absent.and wild imaginings fill the mind. It, proves the truth Of another Proverb that says, “ Fools make'a mock” of evil and sin. Strong drink is “ raging,” that is, clamorous, making a tumult, engaging in riot, as the word really means. Ex perience proves that this word from Proverbs is quite modern. Hence “who soever is deceived’'’ by it is void of understanding or wisdom. -The word used here, means “ ravished,” which in

turn means sinning through igno rance that comes from false impres sions given by the strong drink. II. T he E ffects of W ine (Prov. 23:29r35) In the so-called “woe” chapter of Isaiah, two of the six “woes” mention ed are said to come from intemper ance (cf. Isa. 5:11, 22). “Contentions” follow the use of strong drink, and “ babbling,” or com plainings follow. The intemperate one receives wounds and injuries and can not tell from whence ttyey come, and the very countenance is disfigured by “redness of eyes.” A ll these, and other effects, come to those who “tarry long at the wine.” Not only do the Words of Scripture reveal this truth, but experience also testifies to its reality. There follows a word of exhorta tion to turn from strong drink, lest still more grievous results follpw its use. The very word which liquor in terests use when they advertise their goods as being “smooth” to the taste is the same word the Holy Spirit uses in warning against strong drink. Be ware of it, declares the Holy Spirit, when it “moveth itself aright,” liter ally, w h e n it "glideth d o w n smoothly." > The final effect of strong drink is to give the consumer' the dreadful sense of having a poisonous serpent always with him. His mental facul ties are deranged so that strange things are supposedly seen and per verse things uttered. He is 'blind, to dangers and ignorant of the manner in which he* receives physical hurts. His reason is so impaired that he ac tually seeks again and again the very thing that causes these evils. III. T he D anger of W ine (M a tt. 24:45-51) The danger from the use of wine is that moral perceptions in the intem perate person are blunted, so that duty and responsibility become sec ondary matters. Immediate pleasure is the whole pursuit. Faithfulness is absent, and wisdom departs from the intemperate user of strong drink; his eyes are closed to the certainty of hav ing to answer in judgment to the Lord in a coming day. In this description of the faithless servant there is the clear revelation that he who is an intemperate user of strong drink, if he is a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, is actually a hypo crite. So tremendously evil is the sin of intemperance that it is linked with whoredom (cf. Hos. 4:11) by which Israel’s national understanding was - lost and the nation brought to ruin.
