DAILY Devotional Readings

Our business is to live a moment at a time, and that moment for. God. —Alliance Weekly. ■ 5. His Powerful Name “ God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, . . and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Phil. 2:9-11). Oh, the savor of the name of Jesus, when heard by the ear which has been opened by the Spirit! Oh, the beauty of the Person of Jesus, when seen with the eye of faith by the illumination of the Holy One of Israel! The sight of the burning bush made Moses put off his shoes, but the transporting vision of Jesus makes us put off all the world. He, like the sun, hath ab sorbed all other glories into His own excessive brightness. —Words in Season. 6. Marred for You “As many were astonished at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men” (Isa. 52:14). Thy visage was so marred, That lovely face of Thine, Thy brow, oft wet with heaven’s dew, A crown of thorns entwine. From Thy cheeks they’ve plucked the hair And left their filthy spittles there; Oh, what shame and sore disgrace They’ve heaped upon Thy lovely face! Thy blessed back they also bare, And with a scourge its flesh they tear Until it looks as a new ploughed field For furrows show as its thongs they wield. Thy hands that ministered to their good, We see them nailed to a cross of wood, Thy feet that hastened to their need Are also pierced. See how they bleed; And as Thou hung upon the tree Oh, what a sight to look upon; To think: Thou’rt God’s beloved Son! —Edward A. Elsdon. 7. Loose the Weights! “ Seeing we also are c o m p a s s e d about with so great a cloud of w it nesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily be set us, and let us run with patience, the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith” (HCb. 12:1, 2). Come, then, my soul, do not be afraid to be thyself. Do not try 'to press thyself into the mold of some other man. God made thee, nbt the devil—made thee wholly; therefore, let God have thee, and that ^altogether. Do not be everlastingly spying and suspecting thyself. Fear cannot sing. —Mark Guy Pearse.

1. He Goetb Before “ And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fh;e, to give them light” (Ex. 13:21). These are dark days; the futurels un known; Within men’s minds and hearts, stark fear has grown. "How to Win Souls to Christ" A new booklet on spul winning. Very effective. Easy to use. The things so long we’ve worked for, all seem lost. We scarcely dare to think, or count the cost. .A ll’s changed, We say? No, lift up your eyes And see, undimmed above, God’s sun and skies! Behold He beckons, still He leads us on, Until the terror and the night are gone. . God changes not, though earth may pass away; He still abides; to Him in faith we pray. —Selected. 2. Where Are Your Cares? “ Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you” (1 Pet. 5:7).. , I have casten this work upon Christ to get me Himself . . . For Christ’s^ cross, especially the garland and flow* er of all crosses —to suffer for His name—I esteem it more than I can write or speak to you. I need not run at leisure, because of a burden on my back; my back never bare the like of it—the more heavily crossed for Christ, the soul is still the lighter for the journey.—Samuel Rutherford, 1637, 3. "But Prayer” “But prayer was made earnestly of the church unto God for him” (Acts 12:5, RV.). After describing all the precautions which Herod had taken to guard the Apostle Peter for the judicial murder which was planned for the following morning, the writer simply added, “But prayer.” That “ but” was might ier than all the prison bars and quar- ternions of soldiers, and the sequel was Peter’s deliverance. Let prayer be the keynote of our life and work. Let us write across the dark clouds and mountains of difficulty the mystic and mighty legend, “But prayer,” and the clouds w ill dissolve, and the moun tain w ill become a plain. —A. B. Simpsofi. 4. Ordered Steps “Order my steps in thy word” (Psa. 119:133). The “steps” being ordered means a daily, hourly, momentary guidance, and therefore the Word must be our constant study. Yesterday’s “message” from it w ill not suffice for today. Walking with God means moving step by-step in the w ill of God. We have nothing to do with life in the aggre gate. Each moment brings its duties, responsibilities, burdens, and needs.
