8. The Power Is of God “Before honor is humility” (Prov. ,15:33). It is not humility to underrate your endowments; humility is to think of yourself,% if you can, as God thinks of you. . . Humility is to feel that we have no power of ourselves, but that it all cometh from God. Humility is to lean on our Beloved, saying, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” It is, in fact, to annihilate self, and to exalt the Lord Jesus Christ as A ll in All. —Charles Haddon Spurgeon. 9. Silence in Worship “Mary, who also sat at the Lord’s feet, and heard hiS' Word” (Lk. 10:39, R. V.). Worship implies both listening for and listening to God. . . Mary did not* listen for a moment and then go her way. She placed herself in the listen ing attitude to hear the voice of-Him Whom she loved. That was true wor ship. At the feet of the Master, listen ing to what He had to say! We are not to become so absorbed in the Lord’s work that we lose sight of wor shiping Him, which is more essential than our work, and the only thing that gives it its divine power. —W. A. Sloan. 10. No Need for Depression “Why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy,?” (Psa. 43:2). Oppression is inescapable. Did not our Lord say, “In the world ye shall have tribulation” ? Christian f a i t h does not promise ■immunity, but it does enable us to triumph. “Be of good cheer,” Christ told His own. “ I have overcome the world.” Therefore, depression is inexcusable. We are de pressed when we forsake His light and truth, His fellowship and altai and place of praise. But His provision is inexhaustible. A ll we need we find in Him: He is our Judge, Advocate, Deliverer, Strength, Guide, Joy, and Hope. Let us seek God for the inex tinguishable passion which w ill, en able us to say, “ I shall yet praise Him.”—Kenneth Chrisman. 11. Where Is Your Heart? “Lovest thou me more than these?” . (John 21:15). .What has been our response to that amazing love of Christ? Do we love Him as we love our own souls? Is Jesus Christ absolutely first in our affections? Is Jesus Christ occupying the throne-chamber of heart and soul? Are our lives knit, bound up with His life? Do we really love Him? Love is the most practical as well as the most potent force in the world, for love is that which is not forever seeking to get, but which álways delights to give.-—J. Stuart Holden.

12. Expectant Companionship “Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ” (Tit. 2:13). Lo, He hath promised never more to leave thee, Tho’ days be dark, and unbelief hold sway. Oh, let not Satan, world, and flesh de ceive thee! Rays of His Lamp will guide thee on the way. And tho’ thou see’st the evening shadows lengthen. No need- hast thou all comfortless to mope. Thfe Morning Star thy tested faith can strengthen; Soon day shall dawn and bring “ that blessed hope.” —Selected. 13. Counting on God “My son, God w ill provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together” (Gen. 22 : 8 ). Oh, for a faith like this!—simply to believe what God says, "assured that God will do just what He has prom ised; looking without alarm, from cir cumstances that threaten to make fu l fillment impossible, to the bare word of God’s unswerving truthfulness. Sure ly this habit is not so impossible of attainment. Why then should we not begin to practice it, stepping from stone to stone, until we are far out from the shore of human expediency, leaning on the unseen but felt arm of Omnipotence?—F. B. Meyer.
