Wills & Bequests – A guide

Future Bequest Guide

Did you know?

Christ’s College has a long history of giving. In 1851, Maria Somes gave College its first gift, endowing land and the Somes Scholarships in memory of her husband, Joseph Somes. New Zealand’s first Premier, Henry Sewell, was one of the most important figures in the history of Christ’s College. He arrived in Christchurch in February 1853 to play his part in the Canterbury Association. He also ensured that Christ’s College was well established and financially viable. The tradition of the school’s founders lives on today, recognised through the Christ’s College Sewell Society, established in 2013. The society provides an enduring relationship and connection with those who have committed to supporting Christ’s College, specifically leaving a legacy gift in a bequest.

Christ’s College Foundation It is fitting that our society for major supporters should honour Henry Sewell’s name as a reflection of our shared commitment to Christ’s College and our school mission of Each boy at his best. The Sewell Society complements the Christ’s College Foundation, which helps to ensure future generations of College boys enjoy a world-class education in state-of-the-art facilities. Support from the Foundation continues the legacy of our forefathers, initiated by Maria Somes and Henry Sewell. It offers scholarship programmes that enrich our students’ educational experience.

Connection

Relationships are the lifeblood of our Christ’s College community and the key to our ongoing success. In recognising your role in this network of strength, we invite you to support the Foundation. This could be in the form of a donation towards a scholarship, or by creating your own legacy and leaving a bequest to Christ’s College.

Lasting legacy

We welcome all gifts as a lasting legacy from our much-admired Old Boys and outstanding members of our wider community. A significant gift of a scholarship can transform a life. Equally, gifts of smaller amounts can also be transformative. The spirit of giving is fundamental to the school’s history and its mission. It also lies at the heart of the purpose of the Christ’s College Old Boys’ Association.

How you can make a difference

Like Christ’s College’s forebears, you, too, can leave a gift to Christ’s College to provide more opportunities for our future generations. It can be a percentage of your estate, the value of chattels sold on your death or a set value. All donations to the Foundation are valued, acknowledged, and used exclusively for the benefit of Christ’s College. It is up to you how your donation or bequest is used.
