La idea de un parque fluvial en Santiago comenzó a configurarse el año 2001, con el objetivo principal de recuperar las riberas del Río Mapocho a través de la implementación de exclusas colapsables a lo largo de 34 kilómetros de oriente a poniente. Se aspiraba a generar diversos polos de desarrollo a lo largo del recorrido y asentar la imagen de un Mapocho navegable. Esta imagen se concreta en parte en el proyecto Parque Fluvial Renato Poblete, emplazado en la comuna de Quinta Normal, en el sector poniente de Santiago. El terreno colinda con la comuna de Renca, Recoleta y Santiago. Por el oriente se conecta con el Parque de los Reyes, por el sur con la Costanera Sur y Matucana, y por el norte con el río y la Costanera Norte. El desafío principal del proyecto es generar un espacio público de calidad que involucre el río con un parque. Una laguna de 400 m² para actividades de remo está circundada por distintas lomas de planos inclinados, convirtiendo las 20 ha del terreno en un paisaje artificial que se contrapone a la cordillera y a su entorno industrial inmediato. El parque cuenta con distintas zonas programáticas, que van desde el acceso con su edificio administrativo, canchas de futbolito, anfiteatro al aire libre, juegos de niños y plaza cívica, entre otros. Se divide en dos grandes zonas: Parque Brazo del Río y El Cauce. La primera cuenta con 13 ha formadas a partir de un desvío controlado del río que permitirá el uso de ciertas embarcaciones livianas para navegar. La segunda zona tiene 7 ha que incluyen áreas verdes y juegos.
The idea of a river park in Santiago began to take shape in 2001, with the main goal of recovering the banks of the Mapocho River through the implementation of collapsible locks along 34 kilometers from east to west. The intention was to create several development areas along the route and establish the vision of a navigable Mapocho. This vision was partially realized in the Renato Poblete River Park project, located in the district of Quinta Normal, in western Santiago. The plot borders the districts of Renca, Santiago and Recoleta. On the east it connects to Parque de los Reyes, on the south to the south riverside highway and Matucana Street, and on the north to the river and the north riverside highway. The main challenge of the project was to create a quality public space connecting the river with a park. A 400 m² lagoon for rowing is surrounded by several banks of inclined planes, turning the 20-hectare plot into an artificial landscape that contrasts with the mountains and its immediate industrial context. The park features different functional areas: the entrance area and its administrative building, five-a-side football, outdoor amphitheater, children’s playground and civic square among others. It is divided into two main zones: Parque Brazo de Río and El Cauce . The first has 13 hectares and results from a controlled diversion of the river allowing the use of light boats. The second zone comprises 7 hectares and includes green areas and a playground.
