El edificio materializa el proyecto educativo Campus Creativo, desarrollado por un grupo de académicos de la Universidad Andrés Bello con el objetivo de potenciar la interacción entre distintas carreras afines de matriz artística, fomentando el cruce programático y el trabajo en equipo. Su ubicación en el barrio Bellavista –o La Chimba, palabra quechua que significa “al otro lado” (del río Mapocho)– alude a la condición histórica de barrio de servicio a Santiago y donde se fue conformando un caserío de comunidades indígenas locales, artesanos y una incipiente industria. Esto definió su carácter e identidad hasta hoy, en que acoge a inmigrantes y artistas. En el terreno funcionó la fábrica de pastas La Africana, fundada en 1921 y abandonada hace más de 30 años. El conjunto constaba del edificio de la fábrica, unas construcciones menores y tres casas separadas por un pasaje peatonal entre las calles Purísima y Ernesto Pinto. Esta relación entre trabajo y vida es la que el proyecto buscó preservar.
The building embodies the Campus Creativo educational project developed by a group of professors from Universidad Andres Bello in order to enhance interaction between different artistic programs, promoting programmatic crossings and teamwork. Its location in the Bellavista neighborhood –or “La Chimba”, Quechua word meaning “the other side” (of the Mapocho river)– alludes to the historical condition of service district for Santiago and where a village of local indigenous communities, craftsmen and an incipient industry was born. This has defined its character and identity to this day, welcoming immigrants and artists. The “La Africana” pasta factory founded in 1921 and abandoned more than 30 years ago formerly occupied the site. The complex consisted of the factory building, some minor constructions and three houses separated by a lane between Purísima and Ernesto Pinto streets. This relationship between work and life is what the project sought to preserve.
