Son espacios públicos temperados conectados directamente con la vereda a través de las chifloneras en los edificios del perímetro de la manzana, incentivando el uso comunitario de una planta baja permeable. Los edificios patrimoniales, construidos en mampostería de ladrillo con muros de gran espesor, serán recuperados a través de intervenciones que pongan en valor su organización, estructura y materialidad original. En las fachadas de las galerías propuestas, intervenidas con construcciones de bajo valor y sin presencia de elementos decorativos, se retirarán las capas de revoque dejando el ladrillo expuesto para revelar huellas de distintas etapas de construcción, uso e intervención que han experimentado a lo largo de su historia. Estos muros se reforzarán a través de cadenas de hormigón armado, definiendo un nivel superior parejo entre los distintos edificios que permitirá la instalación de cubiertas de galerías vidriadas. Estas se componen de vigas de hormigón armado ubicadas a 50 cm de distancia, controlando el ingreso de luz natural directa. Al mismo tiempo la dirección del entramado hace que el sol irradie directamente sobre los muros del Edificio de Celdas, calentando una masa térmica que retiene la radiación solar para liberarla en horas frías. Las circulaciones verticales y del segundo nivel se concentran en un nuevo elemento ligero suspendido en las galerías formando un circuito elevado de rampas, puentes y escaleras. The project is based on the appraisal of the setback spaces and patios surrounding the cellblock and turning them into large glazed galleries containing the public activities of the Library and Magallanes Regional Archive. These are public heated spaces directly connected to the sidewalk by double screen doors in the buildings of the perimeter of the block, encouraging community use of a permeable ground floor. The heritage buildings, built with thick brick masonry walls, will be restored by interventions that enhance their organization, original structure and materials. In the facades of the proposed galleries, modified with additions of low value and no decorative elements, the layers of plaster will be removed to expose the brick and the traces of the various stages of construction, use and intervention the buildings have experienced along their history. These walls will be reinforced with concrete beams, normalizing the top level of the different buildings to allow the installation of glazed roof galleries. These are based on reinforced concrete beams placed 50 cm apart, to control the entry of direct natural light. At the same time the direction of the grid allows the sun to shine onto the walls of the cellblock, heating a thermal mass that retains solar radiation and releases it in the cold hours. The vertical circulations of the second level are concentrated on a new element suspended from the galleries and forming an elevated circuit of ramps, bridges and stairs.
