"En todos los casos, los contrastes deben resolverse de manera simultánea y aglutinante". Esta frase de Alvar Aalto condensa las complejidades propias de este encargo: reconocer el carácter patrimonial de una cárcel, su memoria, su historia, su carga simbólica y física que se basa en la privación de la libertad, en la separación espacial de los lazos con el exterior y, por otro lado, el programa de una biblioteca entendida como el lugar de confluencia de conocimiento, de encuentro generacional y de reunión de experiencias. Estos contrastes se refieren también al peso de la arquitectura. La propuesta opera rompiendo los límites establecidos por las estructuras de la Cárcel como propuesta de intervención sobre el patrimonio. Se renueva el uso del edificio y con ello se vence la carga estática de la memoria. En la intervención se rompen los límites de las celdas por medio de perforaciones que las conectan funcional y visualmente. Este proyecto opera interpretando las condiciones patrimoniales propias del lugar y generando una interacción dinámica con lo existente. Se excava el suelo que rodea el edificio principal de la cárcel para generar distancia y nuevos puntos de vista. "In all cases, contrasts must be resolved simultaneously and in binding way." This phrase by Alvar Aalto encapsulates the complexities of this assignment: to recognize the heritage character of a prison, its memory, its history, the symbolic and physical load that is based on the deprivation of liberty, in the spatial separation of ties with the outside and, on the other hand, the program of a library understood as a place of confluence of knowledge, generational meeting and sharing of experiences. These contrasts also refer to the weight of the architecture. The proposed strategy for the intervention of the monument operates by breaking the limits set by the prison structures. The use of the building is renovated and the static burden of its memory is overcome. The boundaries between the cells are broken with perforations that connect them functionally and visually. This project operates by interpreting the heritage site conditions and generating a dynamic interaction with the existing buildings. To generate distance and new perspectives, the land surrounding the main building of the prison is excavated.
