Esta condición reconoce las características climáticas y geográficas de una región extrema en la cual se alternan meses de luz rasante, tenue pero constante, a meses en los cuales la luz es un bien escaso que ha de ser aprovechado y de cierta manera atrapado. La luz es el tejido conectivo de la propuesta. Una alternancia de aperturas, patios, tragaluces, lucarnas interiores conforman el nuevo paisaje de la Biblioteca de Punta Arenas. La luz es al mismo tiempo contenido y contenedor. Las estrategias para definir los nuevos volúmenes y poner en valor el patrimonio del edificio principal de la cárcel antigua se explican por medio de la luz o su ausencia. Se reconocen los ejes principales y se potencian tanto en la horizontal como en la vertical, eso supone romper la estructura de techo para ubicar allí el volumen suspendido de la Colección General. This condition recognizes the climate and geographical characteristics of an extreme region where months of faint but constant grazing light alternate with months in which light is a scarce resource that must be somehow tapped and captured. Light is the connective tissue of the proposal. Alternating openings, patios, and skylights create the new landscape of the Library of Punta Arenas. Light is both content and container. The strategies to define the new volumes and to enhance the heritage of the main building of the old prison are explained by means of the presence or absence of light. The main horizontal and vertical axis are recognized and enhanced, which means breaking the roof structure to place the suspended volume of the General Collection.
