El conjunto habitacional Monseñor Larraín en Talca es parte del proceso de reconstrucción nacional post terremoto de 2010 y reemplazó los edificios anteriores, de 1960, que quedaron inhabitables. Presentada a concurso convocado por el MOP, la propuesta obtuvo el 85% de los votos de la comunidad, que en un innovador proceso de participación ciudadana vinculante validó la concepción urbana y arquitectónica de un conjunto contemporáneo, basado en criterios de sustentabilidad ambiental, económica y social. The Monseñor Larraín housing complex in Talca, part of the process of national reconstruction after the 2010 earthquake, replaced buildings from 1960 that were deemed uninhabitable. A result of a competition organized by the Ministry of Public Works (MOP), the proposal received 85% of the votes of the community, which in an innovative process of binding citizen participation, validated the urban and architectural design of a contemporary complex, based on environmental, economic and social sustainability criteria.

Desde el punto de vista del urbanismo sustentable , se establecieron tres estrategias centrales de sustentabilidad: 1. Control de la radiación solar e ilumi- nación natural de todos los recintos de permanencia: como estrategia central de la propuesta de organización de los 220 nuevos departamentos y considerando la disposición de los dos terrenos que conforman el conjunto, además de las condiciones climáticas propias de la ciudad, se propuso ubicar todos los departamentos en una sola crujía con orientación solar norte. Esta consideración determina la ubicación de los bloques de departamentos de manera escalonada en los terrenos, pues la orientación de los ejes principales de las vías y terrenos (Lircay) es de 48° respecto al norte, hacia el oriente. Considerando la alta densidad del conjunto, el distanciamiento y la proporción entre los 22 edificios fue una de las claves arquitectónicas, manteniendo una distancia cercana a los 16 m promedio entre bloques, de una altura promedio de 13,5 m en los pisos habitables, y 16,5 m sobre la cubierta de paneles solares. Se realizaron simulaciones energéticas para definir esta orientación y garantizar la iluminación natural de los recintos habitables.
From the point of view of sustainable urban planning , three central sustainability strategies were established: 1. Control of solar radiation and natural lighting for all living premises: As a central strategy for the proposed organization of the 220 new apartments and considering the disposition of the two plots that make up the site, as well as the climate conditions of the city, the proposal places all apartments on a single bay with northern exposure. This consideration determines the staggered location of the apartment blocks on the site, since the orientation of the major axis of the roads and sites (Lircay) is 48° off North, to the East. Considering the high density of the complex, the distancing and the proportion between the 22 buildings was one of the key architectural decisions, keeping an average distance of 16 m between blocks, an average height of 13.5 m in the habitable levels, and 16.5 m for the roof with the solar panels. Energy simulations were carried out to define the orientation and ensure natural lighting of the habitable premises.
