Se concibe el nuevo edificio como la pieza clave de un total mayor, no como un elemento arquitectónico único. Se privilegia la idea de conjunto. Se dispone el edificio como una barra esbelta y paralela a la calle Los Navegantes, en la misma línea del edificio de la Escuela de Diseño y en su misma altura, de manera de mantener un perfil único hacia el barrio y hacia el campus. Se opta por una crujía de 8 m de ancho, a fin de liberar el lote lo más posible en el sentido transversal. Estas dos decisiones permiten crear cuatro nuevos lugares para el campus y para el barrio. - Construcción de un gran patio verde (25 x 22,5 m), entre el nuevo edificio, el edificio de Diseño, el edificio de Talleres y el Patio de Madera. - Se completa y pone en valor el patio trasero del edificio de Talleres. El nuevo edificio amplía este espacio (casi 50 x 8 m); el nuevo lugar se consolidará como espacio articulador de los dos edificios y funcionará como extensión de los diferentes programas, con espacios de descanso. - Terraza o zócalo verde (80 x 5 m) que corre paralelo al nuevo edificio y que construye la relación con el barrio, tanto por calle los Navegantes como por Carlos Casanueva, consolidando la esquina como acceso. - Azotea del nuevo edificio (72 x 8 m) que construye una serie de relaciones geográficas y más lejanas; un patio de pavimento duro, donde la vegetación y huertas funcionan en maceteros, reforzando la idea de azotea y escapando del concepto de terraza jardín. Hecho relevante del trazado y volumetría del nuevo edificio es preservar lo más posible las relaciones visuales al interior del campus, evitando que aparezca un nuevo elemento en el perfil.
The new building is conceived as the key part of a larger whole, not as a unique architectural element. The idea of the whole is favored. The building is placed as a slender bar parallel to Los Navegantes Street, in line with the building of the School of Design and with the same height, in order to maintain a single profile towards the neighborhood and the campus. The design is based on an 8m bay in order to keep the plot as open as possible in the transverse direction. These two decisions enable the creation of four new places for the campus and the neighborhood. - Construction of a large green courtyard (25 x 22.5 m), between the new building, the Design building, the workshops building and the Wooden Patio. - The yard behind the workshops is completed and enhanced. The new building expands this space (almost 50 x 8 m); this new place will be consolidated as articulator of the two buildings and will work as an extension of the different functions, with spaces for rest. -Terrace or green base (80 x 5 m) which runs parallel to the new building and embodies the relationship with the neighborhood, along both Los Navegantes and Carlos Casanueva streets, consolidating the corner as the entrance. - Rooftop of the new building (72 x 8 m), which gives shape to a series of distant geographic relations; a hardscaped courtyard, where the vegetation and vegetable gardens is confined to flowerpots to reinforce the idea of a rooftop and escape the concept of a garden terrace. A relevant fact of the layout and volume of the new building is to preserve the visual relationships within the campus as much as possible, avoiding the emergence of a new element in the landscape.
