Community Noticeboard

As we progress through Term 4, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on the many achievements and important updates from across our College community. It ’ s been another busy and productive Term, and as always, there is so much to be proud of. As many of you are aware, Mr. Abney - Hastings has been absent for a short time, and we certainly miss his leadership on our Primary Campus. His absence has reinforced the warmth, dedication, and care that Mr. Abney - Hastings brings to our Primary School community that is felt in every corner of the campus. His leadership has created a bright, compelling, and supportive environment for both students and staff, and we are all looking forward to welcoming him back soon. Term 4 also marks a significant milestone for our VCE students, who are currently undertaking their exams. We want to congratulate each and every one of them for their hard work, determination, and resilience throughout the year. The support from families and teachers has been invaluable in helping our students reach this stage, and we are confident they will give their best in these final assessments. Please join us in wishing them all the very best for the remainder of their exams and for the bright futures that lie ahead. On the Primary Campus, it ’ s been fantastic to see a range of programs and opportunities unfolding for our students. From innovative classroom activities to exciting extracurricular options, there ’ s something for every student to get involved in. Whether it ’ s through our Year 1 Dinner, our Year 2 Sleepover, or leadership initiatives, our Primary students continue to flourish and develop new skills. We encourage all students to take full advantage of these opportunities, as they help foster a love for learning and build important life skills.

The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter PRINCIPAL REPORT

The Lakes is very excited to share with our College community our 2024 School Performance Report.

This year, performance reporting for all Victorian Government schools has been revised to reflect a model that emphasises an equal weighting in learning and wellbeing outcomes.

School performance has been categorised into four performance categories:

Measures of performance look at the following:

We are proud to share that The Lakes School Performance Report indicates the College maintained a Medium level of performance in Learning , and a High level of performance for Wellbeing . Our College ’ s overall measure of performance was categorised to be Medium .

Overall, the College had:

8 measures in the High category

7 measures in the Improving category

11 measures in the Medium category, and

2 measures in the Developing category.

As a College committed to high expectation for continual improvement, we look forward to using this important feedback to support our College in setting 2025 goals.

As we begin to look towards 2025, we are in the process of planning programs, staffing, and finalising student numbers. A key part of this planning is our Prep transition program, which is already underway. We are excited to welcome our new Prep students and support their smooth transition into school life at The Lakes. This program is designed to ensure that every child feels confident and ready for their first year of school, and we look forward to seeing our new students thrive in the year ahead. As the weather warms up, we need to remind ourselves of the importance of being safe in the sun. Term 4 brings sunnier days, and we expect all students to follow our sun smart practices, including wearing hats and applying sunscreen during outdoor activities. Keeping our students safe in the sun is a shared responsibility, and we appreciate your support in ensuring our community is sun smart. The Primary Leadership team are incredibly fortunate to be able to spend time on both campuses throughout the week. Whether we ’ re out in the yard, teaching in the classroom, having conversations with staff, or working with our Secondary students, we are continually reminded of how our values shine through. Our values of Learning, Respect, Teamwork, and Leadership are at the heart of everything we do. These values guide us in creating an environment of high standards, academic rigour, and a culture where every

student and staff member can thrive. We are proud to be part of a community where these values are consistently demonstrated, and we are confident that together, we will continue to build a school that we are all proud of. Finally, we want to gently remind our community of the importance of remaining calm and respectful in all interactions regarding our students' learning and well - being. Whether we are addressing concerns, offering feedback, or celebrating success, it is essential that we continue to model respectful and supportive behaviour. As adults, it is our responsibility to lead by example, and know that together, we can create an environment where everyone feels valued and heard.

Thank you all for your continued commitment to our College. Let ’ s finish the Term strong, continue to support one another, and make the most of the opportunities that lie ahead.

Kind regards

Rob Zull

The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter SCHOOL COUNCIL

Hi Parents/Carers,

Happy mid - Term 4! Very hard to believe we are in the final weeks of the school year! Whilst our Year 12s have finished and exams are still happening for our senior students on Secondary, there are still a lot of activities to fit into the few weeks we have left, such as the Year 3 & 4 Camp; the Colour Run; Year 6 Transition; Year 12 and 6 Graduations; Night Under the Stars; and School Awards Night. Congratulations in advance to our graduating Year 12 and 6 cohorts; to our Year 12 and 6 Valedictorians; and all of the award winners at our School Awards Night on December 18. At our last meeting for 2024 this week, School Council reps were asked to each submit a personal reflection of our achievements for the year. Collectively, and remarkably, our responses were all very similar, which shows how cohesive we are as a group. Four key highlights have stood out to us, being:

As 2024 draws to a close, I would like to acknowledge the hours and hours our parent/carer reps have put in voluntarily to make positive changes to our school and thank them for their dedication and commitment. Without Anna - Lisa Tewma, Grant Voss, Helen Skendaris, Jenny Archibald, Josie Benfari, Kathryn Lieschke and Veronica Marsh, we wouldn ’ t have been able to have our Welcome BBQ, Mother ’ s Day & Father ’ s Day stalls, Easter Raffle, and Mother ’ s Day & Father ’ s Day breakfasts. I would also like to shout - out to Katrina Hartley, Briohny Voss and Karen Gilchrist who have also played an important part with these activities. The sense of teamwork is amazing. I would also like to thank our Executive Leadership team of Mr Panas, Ms Lee and Mr Abney - Hastings and our Business Manager, Ms Saliba, for their wonderful support of suggestions/ideas/initiatives that Council reps have brought to the table, together with the admin support Mrs Thompson and Mrs Potocnik have provided when we have needed it, and Ms Wilson ’ s assistance with promoting our activities. Thank you to our Primary & Secondary captains and the reports they provide at our meetings and to Mrs Mac and Ms Sutton, our staff reps. Looking ahead to 2025, parent/carer engagement and strengthening our community will continue to be a focus. Parents/carers are an important part of our community, and the school needs your support in initiatives and events. Whilst we have one more meeting in our Council term in February, it is timely to remind parents/carers now that the call for nominations for representatives for the new School Council term will go out early in the new school year. Being on Council is a great way to have your input on our buildings/grounds/maintenance program; our fundraising and social activities; and general governance of the school from a strategic viewpoint. If you would like to self - nominate or have any questions about what it involves, please reach out to me at amanda.farrelly@education.vic.gov.au. Lastly, I would like to wish everyone a happy and safe holiday break – hope you get a chance to relax and rejuvenate and School Council looks forward to seeing everyone again at our Welcome BBQ in February 2025!

The completion of the basketball courts on Primary; The completion of building and grounds upgrades and works for both Campuses;

The continuation of the Fundraising team; and

The continuation of the Welcome BBQ and Mother ’ s & Father ’ s Day Breakfast events to bring our community together.

Our program of building and facility upgrades is just about complete, with the final things on the “ to - do ” list being washing the exterior of buildings on both campuses and painting the gym wall at Secondary. Having begun our facility upgrades in 2022, after three years we have practically come to the end of the “ urgent ” or “ most needed ” lists, and as such, the program for 2025 will be considerably smaller.

At this meeting we also:

Endorsed the Indicative School Budget for 2025. Any final amendments to the budget will happen in late February once our final enrolment numbers are confirmed. Were presented with the College ’ s Learning and Wellbeing data for 2024. We are pleased that we are one of the most improved schools in these areas, when compared to similar schools in the State; and Heard about the Department of Education ’ s Active Schools Extracurricular boost we will receive for Secondary and what it could be used for.

Cheers,

Amanda Farrelly School Council President

The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS

On Friday the 15th November, 10 students from Years 4, 5 and 6 were invited with their teacher Ms Wilson to present projects we have been working on during Digital Design classes this year, to other schools, Melbourne Zoo staff and the general public at the Zoos Victoria Showcase Day. When we first arrived at the zoo we had a bit of time to explore. We started at the predator section where we saw the dingos, lions, tigers, snow leopards, Tasmanian devil and a reticulated python. After this we visited the reptile house and saw lots of snakes, lizards and tortoises. But the real reason we were at the Melbourne Zoo was to take part in the showcase. We went into a large space with rows of chairs where 2 ladies dressed up as Eastern Barred Bandicoots introduced us to the event and explained that we were all invited to celebrate the work our schools had done to help fight animal extinction. The CEO of Zoos Victoria spoke as well as youth leaders from other schools. We were all given morning tea and then we walked to an undercover space near the carousel to setup our information stand. While some of us stayed to share what we have been learning at The Lakes, the others went to see what other schools were sharing. There were a lot of people! Half way through we swapped over. At our information stand we were selling items Year 6’ s had made for their Social Enterprise day, like pencil cases, books and keyrings. We raised $25 for the zoo on the day and the remaining items were given to zoo staff to keep selling. Our amazing day finished with lunch and packing up our items. It was so much fun to share what we have been learning at school and we felt really lucky to be one of only 20 schools invited to present what we had been learning!

ANIMAL ENRICHMENT STEM CHALLENGE

YEAR 4 DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY

Students in Year 4 started by identifying the features and purpose of these features for 4 animals (Lion, Little Penguin, Alpine Dingo & Echidna). They then picked one of these animals to learn more about before designing an enrichment object or feature to go in their enclosure to maintain the animals health, engagement and overall happiness.

SCRATCH GAME CHANGERS

YEAR 5 DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY

Students worked through the design process, learning about several Zoos Victoria campaigns, before building a simple game in Scratch to teach others about the campaigns.

CERES SCHOOLS FOR WILDLIFE

YEAR 4 & 5

In Term 3 a select group of students worked with staff from CERES as part of the Schools for Wildlife Program to then design and create a wildlife garden on Primary that will encourage biodiversity within our school's ecosystem.

SOCIAL ENTERPRISE

YEAR 6 DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY

Students worked through the design process as teams to identify a product or service to promote and sell as their Social Enterprise with a focus on teaching P - 5 about a Zoos Victoria campaign through their stall. On the market day students and teachers from around the school spent tokens (instead of money) on a range of products and services like games, biscuit decorating, collectable items, carnival games,

ANIMAL ADAPTATIONS & CAMOUFLAGE

PREP - YEAR 7

As part of National Science Week all students from Prep to Year 7 participated in activities exploring Animal Adaptations. We paired year levels up and together they camouflaged different animals into the school environment.

STUDENT PERSPECTIVE

PRIMARY REFLECTION HARPER & CORMAC PREP STUDENTS

This Term has been so fun! We've learned a lot.

In the Coles shop, we played shopping. We used play money to buy food. It was fun to pretend to be the person who works at Coles and give people their change. We learned that food costs different amounts. Some things are cheap, like apples, and some things are more expensive, like cakes! Alisha set up our Coles shop in the Learning Street to play with. We had all different types of boxes and containers that had different pretend foods and drinks in them. In Maths, we did division with teddies. We sorted our teddies into groups. It was fun and easy to do with our teddies. We love our Year 4 buddies. They help us with our work and play with us outside in the playground. We ’ ve been learning about being kind and making good choices with SWPBS. Our buddies are really nice and helps us learn as well. In PMP, the Year 6 helpers taught us how to jump, skip, and throw and catch a ball. We can jump higher now, and we like throwing the ball to our friends. This Term is awesome! We can ’ t wait for the Colour Run next Thursday on the 28 th November.

SECONDARY REFLECTION JOSH Q YEAR 11 STUDENT

Year 11 VCE has been a challenging but transformative year for us. The jump from Year 10 to VCE felt overwhelming at first, as the workload and expectations were significantly higher. We quickly realised how important it is to stay organised and manage our time effectively, as balancing six subjects, SACs, and revision required a lot of discipline. One of the toughest parts was learning to deal with the pressure of assessments and the constant push to perform at my best. However, we found that seeking support from teachers, friends, and family made a big difference, and we slowly gained confidence in our abilities. Subjects that initially seemed impossible to grasp became more manageable with persistence and consistent effort. Despite the challenges, Year 11 has been a year of growth. We ’ ve discovered new ways to learn, improved our study habits, and gained a deeper understanding of what we ’ re passionate about. It ’ s been rewarding to see the hard work pay off, whether in achieving good results or just feeling proud of our progress. Beyond academics, this year has taught us a lot about resilience and the importance of balance—making time for hobbies, friends, and rest has kept me from getting overwhelmed. Reflecting on this year, I feel more prepared for the challenges of Year 12, knowing that we ’ ve built a strong foundation and learned valuable lessons about ourselves. While it hasn ’ t been easy, I ’ m grateful for the experiences and the personal growth Year 11 has brought.
